In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors await inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, it has been recently re-opened by the research and charity branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation and operates in strict secrecy... until now. Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility and what he discovers treads a terrifying line between science, religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive. Outlast is a true survival horror experience which shows that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind itself. Are you prepared? Expand

Jump scares may have your heart racing for a few seconds, however, creeping across that darkened courtyard with your batteries running out while something out there wants you tortured and dead will have you on edge until the experience ends.

It's pure horror, as if you were in an IMAX cinema. It will surround you, and terrify you, especially in the very well crafted first hours. Then it gets a bit repetitive, but it's still an adventure you won't easily forget.

We would have asked Red Barrels for a little innovation instead of sticking to the new hide & run mechanics, but still, Outlast is an outstanding survival horror that will terrify pretty much everyone.

It's not the sort of horror that'll stay with you long beyond the credits, not a quiet and subtle creep fest, but a blunt force shocker. And as such it's effective because it's just so damn drastic.

For the most part, Outlast lives up to its reputation. Although a little too quick to link gore with horror for my liking, it rests upon wide foundations of creepiness and builds on them with a good amount of tension and urgency.

A great example of the new wave of indie horror, Outlast isn't revolutionary or particularly terrifying, but some great jump scares and a fun, cheesy story make it well worth checking out. [Issue#241, p.72]

If you already own the PC version, there is absolutely zero reason to purchase this again. On the other hand, Sony is releasing it for free for PS members right off the bat, which is a tough price to argue down.

I have it for both PC and now PS4. Overall this game is probably one of the most spookiest games I've played in awhile! Also if your a PS Plus member it's free! That's the best part, even though I would buy it again if it wasnt. To be honest I first thought this game would be like the rest of the horror genre which is all action now but it isn't..it's a classic! Instead of shooting you actually have to hide which makes the game even scarier! Overall this game is great for people who like horror and challenging games or just for people that want to have some jumpscares and be spooked out! This an amazing game and of you have PS plus don't miss this opportunity! Expand

I login when I feel folks need to experience a great title -- and Outlast is flipping fantastic. It's not just jump scares. Listening to Chris Walker's footsteps as he pounds his way past your hiding spot.....or watching Trager peer under a bed frame as he hunts you amid his dozens of vivasection victims....or glancing over your shoulder as a mob of blade wielding crazies sprint after your down a pitch black hall, illuminated only by the IR lense of your mini-cam....HOLY CRAP. The sounds, the graphics, the overall atmosphere of this game and its DLC expansion (Whistleblower) are incredible. And for $30 you get about 8-9 hours of combined playing time....which is a lot of bang for your buck, when you consider there is NO down time here. If you're not running/hiding for your life you're waiting to haul a** from that next bloodthirsty loon.

The game honestly deserves a 9 if you're looking just at pacing and gameplay. There are a couple of instances where the fun bordered on frustration (due to an escape route that might have been TOO well hidden). I'm giving it a 10 because Red Barrels was incredibly brave/focused on producing the game they wanted to provide. Do NOT let your kids try this thing. I've never seen a game more deserving of its rating. But in the same breath, this is the first time in years I've seen horror done right in a video game. I'll be playing through it again on a higher difficulty ...and to record some more polished clips to share with friends....once I get my heart rate back under control.

With the success of RE4 most franchises have traded the scares for more action based survival horror and let the settings be enough. Sadly, most of them failed miserably and we now only have one survival action horror game worth playing, The Last of Us.
However, even The Last of Us is void of any truly horrifying moments. Where's the scary?
Outlast has come to remind us that games can be very scary if done right.
In Outlast you play a reporter who just got his big scoop on a mental asylum. You investigate the asylum to discover its horrific secrets and find yourself lurking the corners with your only weapon: a video camera.
Outlast is suspenseful and eerie. The lighting (played as intended) looks amazing and the attention to detail, like bloody footprints or placing your hands on a wall make the experience feel real and terrifying. Blood and guts, bone and sinew haven't looked this good since... Probably ever. The gameplay is rather linear but still intense throughout. I found myself often turning back down a stairwell or hallway because all of the doors in that area were locked. In those cases you are reminded that you are playing a game, which is always a disappointment.
Occasionally too, areas can seem like filler (sewer valve section for example) but they are always short and usually still appealing in their own way. Soon again you are awaken by another intense occurrence or unique and surprising inclusion to a video game such as necrophilism.
The music in Outlast is good. The background sounds create a sense of isolation and foreboding doom as expected and the music played always seem to match your angst. Unfortunately, it seems unfinished in certain areas such as a piano tune played in the distance. Its creepy and frightening yet it seems only 8 measures long before it begins to repeat itself. Thats saddening for such a dark song.
Outlast seems to only really fall short in its story. Though it isn't a disaster by any means it can go easily unnoticed by the time you reach the climax of the game. Only stopping to read pages and pages of documents will give you any clue of whats really going on at the asylum and doing so really seems to slow the pace and disconnect you for the time being.
Overall, Outlasts commitment to great scares and permanent anxiety have created a unique experience that is very hard to come by. This is a must own for any survival horror enthusiast.

Best game out there on the PS4 in my opinion, at least while we all wait for "that game that's going to blow our minds"!

Based on the fact the game is free, it should get a 10 by default but in the intrest of fair play, and the fact that i wanted to review the game in its own right and not just the fact that its free I have given it an 8.

Graphics: 8 genuinely realistic, especially in night vision mode.

Sound/ atmosphere: 9 doesn't matter how big and brave you are, this game WILL give you the fright in many places.

Story: 7 The characters are interesting but it does not really go into any detail with any of them. The story isn't incredible but there is enough about it that will make you want to play until the end to see what happens.

Replay Value: 6.5 You cant really do anything differently enough to make a big impact 2nd or 3rd time round.

Over all: Solid 8. The game is out to scare you, and it will. Graphics, sound, location, all of these things are well thought of and well delivered. Just a shame the characters who all seem very interesting do not play a bigger role than being obstacles to overcome.

But enough about my experiences with the game. Let's talk about the game as a whole. Pros: Despite the fact Outlast didn't really scare me until the last few hours the atmosphere was excellent throughout the entire journey. The graphics for the most part look nice with the exception some of the character models. The idea of looking for batteries for your camera is done vary well and makes for some of the scariest moments of the game. Hiding from enemies is really scary (even though I didn't fine the game as scary as I thought it would be). Cons: The game can be beaten within 6 hours. The character models might look cool at first but, If you look closely at them, you can see the characters have weird faces. Also penises -_-.

    Outlast gets a 7.3/10.

Boring boring boring. Cannot describe how much this game angers me. It isn't scary, it is just incredibly loud when the music kicks in. ABoring boring boring. Cannot describe how much this game angers me. It isn't scary, it is just incredibly loud when the music kicks in. A bit like how adverts between TV programmes are always slightly higher in volume well this game takes that to the extreme.

I would have turned the music down a tad but guess what you cannot adjust the music. Completely overrated game I wouldn't wish on anyone.

"ah a FPS with no weapons, must vote it great" really no just don't it is awful. Save your bandwidth.
