In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors await inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, it has been recently re-opened by the research and charity branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation and operates in strict secrecy... until now. Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility and what he discovers treads a terrifying line between science, religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive. Outlast is a true survival horror experience which shows that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind itself. Are you prepared? Expand

Jump scares may have your heart racing for a few seconds, however, creeping across that darkened courtyard with your batteries running out while something out there wants you tortured and dead will have you on edge until the experience ends.

It's pure horror, as if you were in an IMAX cinema. It will surround you, and terrify you, especially in the very well crafted first hours. Then it gets a bit repetitive, but it's still an adventure you won't easily forget.

We would have asked Red Barrels for a little innovation instead of sticking to the new hide & run mechanics, but still, Outlast is an outstanding survival horror that will terrify pretty much everyone.

It's not the sort of horror that'll stay with you long beyond the credits, not a quiet and subtle creep fest, but a blunt force shocker. And as such it's effective because it's just so damn drastic.

For the most part, Outlast lives up to its reputation. Although a little too quick to link gore with horror for my liking, it rests upon wide foundations of creepiness and builds on them with a good amount of tension and urgency.

A great example of the new wave of indie horror, Outlast isn't revolutionary or particularly terrifying, but some great jump scares and a fun, cheesy story make it well worth checking out. [Issue#241, p.72]

If you already own the PC version, there is absolutely zero reason to purchase this again. On the other hand, Sony is releasing it for free for PS members right off the bat, which is a tough price to argue down.

I have it for both PC and now PS4. Overall this game is probably one of the most spookiest games I've played in awhile! Also if your a PS Plus member it's free! That's the best part, even though I would buy it again if it wasnt. To be honest I first thought this game would be like the rest of the horror genre which is all action now but it isn't..it's a classic! Instead of shooting you actually have to hide which makes the game even scarier! Overall this game is great for people who like horror and challenging games or just for people that want to have some jumpscares and be spooked out! This an amazing game and of you have PS plus don't miss this opportunity! Expand

I'm a big survival horror fan and this scratched my itch. I loved the gore and the twisted story. This was the first game in many years that actually got me with their jump scares and kept the tension very high. I loved that their are just a few enemies that reoccur, kept it more realistic to me. Also don't sell yourself short by not buying the DLC Whistleblower. Expand

But as the way the game is built it is not really a game you can play over and over because the "monsters" walk the same path and the scary parts is on the same places but other then that a great game! Outlast is terrifying!!! No it really is. I've played a fair few horror games since I started gaming in the 80's (the first been Nightbreed onOutlast is terrifying!!! No it really is. I've played a fair few horror games since I started gaming in the 80's (the first been Nightbreed on Amiga) and only a few compare to the scares in Outlast. The reason I find it so scary is because you have no weapons at all. Usually a beast jumps out in a game; you get a little scare, aim up and blow its head off with a shotgun. In Outlast your heart rate is constantly up as you creep through the dark corridors in Mount Massive Asylum using your video camera to record and document events or using the night vision when there is no other light source. When you do stumble across one of the many deformed and horrific inmates the only options are to run or hide. This creates such tension that often your frantic actions will lead to death.

I often found myself doing stupid things or just hiding in a corner awaiting death as terror took over, I almost wanted death so the game would end and I could return to my peaceful life and relaxing front room. This is a rarity in most horror games today.

You really feel like you are in the game. The graphics are good and the lighting effects work well. The setting is eerie and at times disturbing. The plot is strong and the controls work well. This is survival horror in its rawest form. Run, hide, explore, find batteries, escape!

The game kind of reminds me of the indie hit SCP-Contamination breach. This is due to the emphasis been on survival and wits rather than run and gun. Outlast is a game best enjoyed on your own with the lights out (although I was too scared to play on my own and needed my brother to come round and play it with me). But try it on your own and believe me you will be scared!

The game is currently free on PSN (another great reason to invest in a PS4 who clearly love supporting indie games and alternative titles rather than your average AAA rubbish). For free, this is a good bit of disturbing fun. The 4-5 hour play time is just perfect for this type of game; any longer I would have likely had a heart attack. So if you love horror games, give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Outlast is, essentially, a DECENT horror game to me.

The gameplay of Outlast gets really repetitive once you're about 3 hours in.
See bad enemy, run or hide, wait until enemy doesn't see you, continue, repeat.

The story is okay, but the ending is disappointing and once you finish the game, you feel like it was for nothing.

The graphics are great, and the level design is also excellent, with claustrophobic hallways or a prison full of insane people. This game is one of the best looking games now on the PS4.

The sound of Outlast is the best thing about this game. Once you're walking along quietly, a loud sound comes when someone jumps at you, and the sound is what scares you.

Overall, I enjoyed Outlast, but only in 2 hour sessions. Not because I was scared (I jumped LOTS of time playing this game), but because the gameplay got repetitive.

Note: There is lots of sexual things and gore in this game that I felt was not that necessary.

Developer who forgets games should be fun and not ridiculously hard.

If you like dying and repeating the same section over and over you will love it.

If you want a fun game which doesnt make you want to smash your controller this isnt for you.
