Stray Souls barely works well enough to finish, but it lacks the kind of refinement and effort needed to bring together all of the ideas presented in this game. Doubly so, the technical issues make an already fragmented narrative feel even more disjointed. Even for people who enjoy bad horror, this is a hard sell.
"Stray Souls" misses the mark as a horror game, falling short of the expectations set by its Silent Hill inspiration. With lackluster gameplay, unconvincing characters, and numerous technical issues, the game fails to provide the engaging and terrifying experience horror fans crave.
Good-
The visuals look good, whether it's the environmental textures or the lighting. Some decent puzzles in the beginning. Gunplay, when it works, is serviceable.
Bad-
Combat as a whole is unpolished. The dialogue is laughable at best and mind-numbing at worst. Tries and fails to imitate better horror games. No real sense of horror or tension. Poor presentation and voice acting, with one of the worst protagonists ever. Boring exploration and progression. Dumb enemies and glitchy bosses.
Thoughts-
In summary, buy Black Tabby Games’ Slay the Princess instead. It’s a better horror game, a much better story with interesting characters, has a distinctly gorgeous 2D art style and is cheaper. Even if you receive Stray Souls for free, the few laughs you’ll get from the absurdity of it all and the solid graphics can’t overcome how terrible the gameplay experience is. It may not beat the likes of Skull Island: Rise of Kong or Gollum for Worst Game of the Year, but that speaks more to their utter lows than anything else.
I admit I was fooled by the marketing campaign and hoped for an indie
survival horror gem. Stray Souls turned out to be a nightmare but for
completely different reasons than I expected. It’s an extremely poor
game that should have never seen the light of day and I’m flabbergasted
that no one – neither the developers nor the publisher nor the investors
– said THAT’S ENOUGH at some point.
Stray Souls is easily one of the worst horror games ever made. The fascistic interests of its director aside, this is a defective product duct taped into a barely coherent mess of prepurchased assets, algorithmically generated art, and bargain bin genre tropes...To play it is to cringe at a rare extremity of creative shamelessness. This stunning example of maladroit artistic negligence struggles to achieve the deeply grounded bar of “playable” yet has the insulting nerve to try and claim a desperate connection to Silent Hill. The temerity of this crime against spookiness is off the charts...How dare Stray Souls? How f.cking dare it?
This is an absolutely broken game.
All the characters and stories are cheap and broken.
You'll understand it within the first 5 minutes.
Enemy AI is broken.
Combat is very Souls-like.
Just roll and shoot the handgun.
The crates around there only contain bullets.
The only weapon is a handgun.
The enemy and handgun are also assets that I have seen somewhere before.
Originality? Not at all.
It's full of ****'s normal for characters to behave unnaturally.
There are also many bugs that make it impossible to progress.
It would be impossible to fix this.
Because it needs to be recreated.
Unfortunately, if you post this in a discussion on Steam, you will be banned.
They don't even listen to negative opinions and go around deleting negative posts.
This does not provide ideal feedback.
The players want the negatives to be fixed.
It's such a cruel response that it makes me laugh.
