The path to the inevitable but deeply moving conclusion is lively and thoroughly entertaining. Friedlander gets us there by throwing in unexpected yet true-to-life twists and turns that will likely be all too familiar to new parents, who typically don’t have the help of a second couple to share the responsibility.
Go with the somewhat far-fetched concept, get past the overt sentimentality, and you’ll find a true crowd-pleaser.
The setup is ridiculous, but the playing is pure comedy of mortification and watch-through-your-fingers funny.
The last 75 minutes of Babysplitters doesn’t live up to the promise of the first 45. What is light, snappy and fun becomes labored, cluttered and almost too serious for its own good.
