Night Warning is a fine psychological horror film. As the maniacally possessive aunt and guardian of a 17-year-old boy, Susan Tyrrell gives a tour-de-force performance.
Director William Asher, whose previous credits include various episodes of I Love Lucy and several beach party movies--most notably, BEACH BLANKET BINGO and HOW TO STUFF A WILD BIKINI--keeps the action rolling at a brisk pace, while Tyrrell turns in one of her best performances as the psychopathic aunt.
Tyrell goes from gorgeous to viciously reptilian in the blink of an eye in her tour-de-force performance, and the film’s homosexual subplot, though not particularly PC, is an intriguing early instance of gay life depicted in a mainstream film genre.
Unfolding deftly under Asher's direction, Night Warning combines darkly outrageous humor with persuasive psychological validity. [12 Feb 2004, p.E14]
