It's over pretty fast, just 75 minutes, but it has its grisly moments and a few underwater sequences that are pretty creepy.
Dementia 13 has always been a chilling and confident horror mixtape, fashioned by a man who was a few years away from consecutively producing four of the most famous of all American movies.
Despite the rough edges, you feel you’re in the hands of someone who enjoys telling a story, and knows how to do it — even when the story’s a disposable one such as this.
It’s a gothic horror film that significantly benefits from its B-movie makings, going hard with the blood and gore, which only seems possible because of its lack of color. And while it’s by no means perfect, it does hint at Coppola’s capabilities, which would later captivate many.
There's no question that it carries all the hallmarks of a low-budget Corman effort. That being said, there is the feeling in Dementia 13 that there's a filmmaker behind the camera that really cares about the story at hand.
Despite some inventive photography and decent gore for its day, its uneven pace renders it a curio for Coppola fans.
A cheapo gothic horror film intended to ride the coattails of Psycho.
