With a zippy soundtrack and breezy editing style, Every Body comes off as an up-to-date declaration that being intersex is something to be celebrated. In the end, we can’t help but share in the enthusiasm.
Every Body is about a serious and under-reported topic, yet Cohen makes it fascinating without ever exploiting the trio of people she’s documenting. It’s the purest form of documentary, wherein the goal is to educate and inform without falling into prurient interest.
The three people we meet here have worked every side of every street, by necessity: They’re artists of self-invention, activists of serious intent and just plain good company on screen.
Every Body is primarily an informative documentary, one that takes a cursory glance at many facets of the intersex awareness conversation to give viewers unfamiliar with the material a new perspective.
Just want to counteract the 0 ratings from the bigots. Listen, basement dwellers, just because the world is too complicated for you to understand doesn't make it okay for you to spew your hate everywhere.
Julie Cohen who co-directed "RGB," and "My Name is Pauli Murray" with Betsy West goes out on her own with "Every Body," an insightful documentary about a rarely explored minority -- intersex people. It focuses on three individuals Saifa, Alicia, and River, who were each born exhibiting characteristics of both genders. For those who believe that gender is strictly binary (either you're a male or female), the film reveals that for approximately 240,000 people in the United States, they don't neatly fit into either category. Unlike trans people who identify with a different gender than the one assigned at birth, intersex people often externally resemble one gender, but genetically may indicate the opposite gender. For example, an individual may have breasts like a female, but be genetically male with testes. The film also explores attempts by doctors to surgically "assign" a gender to a person (often at a very young age) that may conflict with one's gender identity. The stories of all three subjects are diverse with some common threads. For those who come with an open mind, "Every Body" is a provocative and moving work that can heal wounds and literally save lives.
An intersex person used to be inaccurately called a hermaphrodite, but the correct definition is any individual born with sexual characteristics that don't fit the typical binary notion of male/female bodies (there are more than 30 intersex variations). This doc introduces 4 people who had non-consensual medical interventions in an attempt to alter their gender identity. Most of the time is spent interviewing the 3 individuals who are leading the political the movement. They discuss the harm that they've endured, both physically and emotionally, while blazing a path for acceptance and recognition. The 4th profile features a story about the landmark case of David Reimer, which in some ways is more touching than their current stories. This is a fascinating subject and this doc does a good job of stating the case. The major points get repeated, which slows down the momentum, and the music choices can be a bit too obvious. Even so, this little-known subject is brought proudly and effectively out in the open, helping increase understanding and appreciation for all humankind.
