A mildly intriguing thriller of comeuppance that leaves you wanting more — not more archly stylized violence or repetitive revenge fantasy, perhaps, but more insight into the connection between the eponymous assassin (Abigail Breslin) and her highly skilled mentor (Wes Bentley).
Final Girl has an interesting premise however the plot is so weak and convoluted that it really does not stand up. Beautifully shot with a great cast, but I really was expecting more.
The build up to the main event is just extremely boring and the girl going from childhood to an adult is way too rushed too. I mean as an adult she still **** at training, but shouldn't she be so much better at it already since she was recruited when she was a child? So many plotholes it's insane. However, the ending with the chasing was quite alright!
Trained to be a final girl, to finish it off the transgressions.
The storyline is not bad, even though it is a very familiar concept, but it was not developed smartly enough with scenes and twists and all. The characters are fine, but I was not convinced with the casting. Not everybody, only Breslin. I have been watching her films since she was a child artist, only her recent film are not that great, or even simply good to appreciate her involvement. I blame her choices of the film and its filmmakers. As for this, it's clearly visible that she's not physically suitable to do such role. This kind of film is for Chloe Grace. For me she's more a Disney product.
The other actors were not bad, especially those four fellows in the negative roles. There's nothing to talk about Wes Bently, he was like in a guest role. When it comes to the film story, it does not make any sense at all. Okay, training a person from the very young age to be terminator is very interesting for a film. But when the assignment was given to that person, as per how it all took place in this film, I thought it was unnecessary. Because it could have been dealt in an easy way. So just for the film, they took the hard way and shed some blood.
Happy part was, the film did not look so boring. The setting was too dark, they avoided other unrequired characters to enter into the frame. So to focus everything on those few ones and made an attempt to shape up the film as much possible best. I would have liked it if it was a little better in some sections. In the end, I'm not fully satisfied, so I don't think it is worth a watch. Instead, you should check out other similar concept films like 'Hanna', 'Nikita' et cetera.
4/10
The movie has an interesting premise, Abigail Breslin is a good and pretty actress and her mentor Wes Bentley... has a nice face.
I like the setting in the sixties, The sober style of the movie is rather cool. But once the 4 killers and Abigail get to the forest the whole story gets boring and stupid.
Nothing is been told about what happened to Abigail's parents, there is no explanation about the motive of the killers' behavior and what is really the reason for her mentor to train a small girl in fighting and surviving to kill those guys in particular? Or is she a weapon that will be used against many criminals and killers? Wouldn't it be easier to just shoot them himself? And who is he anyway, is he working for the police or just a freelance problem solver?
Also the hallucinations of the killers after being drugged are not very interesting or scary. The whole chase in the forest is dull and the fights are silly. Only the last fight with the leader of the killers is a little better. It was funny when he proposed to Abigail to marry and... kill people.
I rate this movie a score of 4 out of 10 (3 points for the acting of Abigail Breslin and 1 point for the couch in the forest).
Oh, wow what a mess. There are several movies coming out with similar titles, and I hope this is the weakest one.
First, what genre was it aiming for? It's not a competent action thriller, and Abigail Breslin is not believable in that role at all - the good scenes she had were in the pretending phase and in the mind game she plays at the end. The fight scenes are very lame (possibly to hide that a stunt double was used for everything?) if the movie wanted a claim at the action genre. But maybe it wanted to be horror, as the term it used for the title. If so, it did not do any better; it didn't even have jump scares, the most basic brick cheap modern horror throws at the viewer's windows. There was no gore on screen, and the "deepest fears" were basic drama material (betrayal, mostly), so didn't seem intended to frighten.
Secondly, the revenge premise didn't work. This adult guy trains a young child to adolescence to... kill 17 year olds who were children when the guy's wife died? No explanation is provided. I'm all for taking your time, but the whole thing is too roundabout. And the revenge itself wasn't satisfying for me: except for the last man, everyone died too quickly.
The movie didn't convince that the girl was ready to hunt the killers; the hunting part was badly done, she didn't stalk them, was just shown finding them, and she had difficulty in all fights, despite her opponents drug-induced incapacitation. And the fact that she was shown taking the drug cocktail once didn't pay off when the drinking scene played out, because the way it was shown, she could have just pretended to drink. It seems like a nitpick, but all these details add up to a feeling that the movie is a collection of cliched scenes very poorly strung together.
Since what she showed in the movie in terms of skills did not warrant the years of training she got, why was the "recruited as a child" part even necessary? Why not have Abigail Breslin be recruited as a 14 year old, train for a few years, then take revenge on these guys? Bonus if the age of the killers is left out, so the pointless "but wait, they were children when she was recruited" mess is avoided.
Did this go through many rewrites and maybe a genre switch? It's one thing that would explain the horrible failure that came out - well, that or incompetence.
How anyone can like this trash is beyond me. Apparently this is some photographer's debut feature, and he should just stick to photography. This man isn't Tarantino, no matter how hard he tries.
Hideous, cringe-worthy overacting, a tragically miscast Abigail Breslin, poor Wes Bentley and the perpetual "why am I doing this" look in his eyes, brain aneurysm-inducing dialogue, countless plot holes and clichés, and god, the awful, awful cinematography.
Do people really think this movie looks good? It looks like a '90s music video. Is that acceptable for a feature film now?
