It’s a deceptively dimensional portrayal, that of someone who worries his stage is getting smaller and smaller. And in Frias’ magnetic feature is enough spirit, sound and artistry to give his journey a meaningful spotlight.
There is a semi-frustrating sense that Frias hasn’t quite made the movie that he wanted to – that either time was not on his side or that he fussed too much in the editing booth.

Hay una escena donde abren con un gran plano general que nos muestra cómo luce la ciudad de Monterrey llena de edificios que iluminan sus noches. En ese momento, la cámara gira lentamente hacia la oscuridad y desciende entre lo más profundo hasta mostrarnos una comunidad marginada, un grupo de pandillas bailando cumbias con mucha pasión. Esta sencilla secuencia plantea -sin el uso de diálogos y todo a través de la fotografía y los sonidos- el tono de la película, la diferencia de clases y el choque cultural de una región a otra.
Ya No Estoy Aquí es una película brillante que nos muestra con mucha crudeza el daño que provocó la violencia y la inseguridad en la vida de esta comunidad -obligando a más de uno abandonar su país ocultándose en el extranjero- en el sexenio del ex presidente Felipe Calderón ante la guerra contra el narcotráfico.
Lo maravilloso de esta película es que su enfoque principal habla sobre la vida de estas pandillas y cómo enfrentan estos problemas sociales a través de su pasión por el baile y las cumbias. Es por medio de los sonidos de la radio y las noticias de la televisión que la película nos introduce a esta guerra de pandillas contra el narco.
El guion es maravilloso, cada diálogo está formado por los modismos y el lenguaje exacto y real de la región, otorgando un realismo más puro y humanizado a sus personajes. La película toca temas sociales muy profundos y los expone de una forma increíble jugando con las tomas, los sonidos, la música y los bailes. Vas a estar maravillado por conocer esta comunidad -que la mayor parte del tiempo pasa desapercibida en toda obra audiovisual- que desde su inicio hasta su espectacular escena final no podrás despegar el ojo del televisor. Esta es una de las mejores películas mexicanas de los últimos años, este es el cine que necesitamos y que debemos apoyar. Está en Netflix!

I'm No Longer Here (“Ya no estoy aqui”) is one of those Netflix movies you’ll wish you’d watched on the big screen. The film from Mexico City-born writer/director Fernando Frias de le Parra is so gorgeously shot and offers such a rich sense of place that it’s always visually compelling, even when the narrative tends to sag a bit.
Frías de la Parra is thoughtful and precise in conveying the cultural identity of these young people, and their spirit pulses through the story.
As a glimpse of a distinctive world and what happens when a young man who thrives within it gets uprooted, the film will yield low-key charms for patient viewers.
They are more than a meme. This movie should also be viewed as a documentary. ¡Viva México, cabrones!

Uno de los pájaros raros del cine mexicano. Un vistazo a una de las subculturas que existen en el país, y las dificultades que debe pasar uno de sus fieles para preservarla ante la violencia urbana y la barrera del idioma. A ver.
