If this is the end of Luther, The Fallen Sun serves as the perfect send-off. It’s surprisingly grounded considering the leap from TV (a Dover ferry is about as exotic as it gets) but constantly ambitious enough to warrant the two-hour runtime.
It definitely delivers the goods, making it fairly obvious that DCI John Luther isn’t going away anytime soon.

Idris Elba continues the role he originated in the BBC series as a thoughtful, obsessed and sometimes violent Detective Chief Inspector. Andy Serkis works a grand coif as the villain, a savage sadist whose scheme is truly diabolical. He starts by getting Luther in prison, which means Luther must escape, solve the string of horrible murders and avoid being caught himself. Fortunately, thanks to Neil Cross (who created the series and wrote a compelling screenplay) and director Jamie Payne, the situations are involving, the action scenes work well and things get tense. Of course, Elba's dark performance drives the whole thing, which turns out to be a well-crafted and very involving police procedural. NOTE: I never watched the series, so this review is strictly based on the film.

A good continuation of the series, a lot of people will find something to dislike but these things are small. They’ve translated a TV into an interesting 2 hour movie which holds the heart of the original tv show, Idris Elba is still great. Good performance from Andy Serkis.

You needn’t have watched all five seasons of “Luther” to take a chance on Luther: The Fallen Sun. But there’s also a chance that you may find yourself wanting to afterwards.
The budget’s been upped considerably. Hollywood’s own Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo have been air-lifted in for support. And it’s fun, in the patently ridiculous way these sorts of zhuzhed-up thrillers tend to be.
There is just enough on the film’s surface to keep the journey entertaining.
One of the main pleasures of the TV series was how Cross and co. always had Luther caught in the crosscurrents of two conflicting agendas, and the tension of that juggling act provided much of the pleasure, especially when it all (mostly) worked out. Fallen Sun is a rote and simpleminded letdown by comparison.
The film defaults to the most pedestrian narrative turns imaginable when it’s not just recycling bits from the series.
Overall an entertaining movie that's thrilling despite a few scenes of convenience.

Story as a whole is good to very good. What grinds my gears is when at least 3 scenes or behaviors of characters make absolutely no sense. The movie is therefore not reliable. Plus there happened things which you don't understand without watching the series.

Decent thriller, the angles and suspense are pretty tame here unfortunately. I appreciate that he just randomly went to stand on the roof a building to look cool I guess.

in a nutshell, this film is crap. Yeah, plenty of suspense and decent acting but the plot has more holes than a block of Swiss cheese. If that doesn’t bother you then have it. For more discerning watchers, avoid this and save the two hours of your life for something better.
