Lester treats the whole thing with breezy exuberance, with colourful cinematography by legendary Carpenter, Zemeckis, and Spielberg collaborator Dean Cundey, and best of all, a killer late-disco soundtrack sweeps all your cares away.
Starring Linda Blair and directed by Mark Lester, this 1979 film was made too late to cash in on the roller-skating craze that briefly swept parts of California in the 1970s. The story is inconsequential, but the camp value is high. [26 Nov 2000]
Let's say Roller Boogie is no better and no worse than the beach blanket/bikini/bingo/bongo movies, and from there you're going to have to take it by yourself.
It's the story of a rich girl (Linda Blair) who runs away to enter a disco roller-skating contest with a poor boy (Jim Bray). Along the way, they hook up with other skaters to keep the mob from taking over their favorite roller rink. It's as dumb as it sounds. [09 Dec 1993, p.F2]
103 minutes is an awfully long time to watch people whiz along the boardwalk. The novelty wears off in a hurry.
