The best of the blaxploitation horror flicks, with William Marshall back as the African vampire summoned by that ol'black magic and some hip voodooo practitioners, led by high priestess Pam Grier. [21 Oct 1995, p.E1]
SCREAM, BLACULA, SCREAM benefits from a slicker presentation but the script is fairly unimaginative and fails to capitalize on the more intriguing aspects of the clash between voodoo religion and the vampire legend.
Budgetary restrictions offer a narrow visual scope which isn’t helped by the plodding, stagy pace (maddeningly slow at times).
Despite all its blood-letting, Scream Blacula Scream fails for lack of incident, weakness of invention, insufficient story.
There’s so much distance between where Blacula started and where Scream Blacula Scream ends up that the sequel quickly exhausts its thin purpose.
Scream, Blacula, Scream is just an interim exploitation effort, and a warm-up for the better vampires in Marshall's future.
