Until the Wheels Fall Off could’ve maybe explored Hawk’s personal life with a bit more focus, but Jones still creates a captivating, edge-of-your-seat documentary that manages to make the idea of landing a trick a genuinely moving scenario.
“Until the Wheels Fall Off” works better as a humanistic exploration than it does as a biography, making its Hawk focus occasionally feel like a weakness.

LOVED IT! thought tony was a drug addict and he was a delinquent when i was growing up but i was so wrong and the ppl were wrong about him too. He is such an honorable guy, great role model and he went thru alot. He looks old af because of his mindset n the bumps n stress from skateboarding he literally put his all into it. Its not because of drug abuse (unless they just hid that stuff from the doc)

A deep dive into all things Tony Hawk… pretty much a biopic, in a documentary setting. Well made, and quite personal.

This lively and at times moving film explains, eloquently, why Hawk has endured in popular culture — and why he can’t stop risking his bones to master the maneuvers few can do.
“Until the Wheels Fall Off” may not, no pun intended, reinvent the wheel of sports documentaries. But it’s a compelling dive into skateboarding culture from 1980 onwards and helps to illustrate just how important Hawk was to legitimize the sport.
Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off is a reckoning of passion told by those who best understand the price of that love story: Hawk, his loved ones and his peers on the board.
Skating fans and Hawk aficionados will find a lot to like ... But it’s frustrating to see Jones’ approach fail to dig much deeper into the man than we’d already expect, opting instead to more broadly elaborate on the low-key death wish a lot of skaters seem to engage in.
Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off shines brightest when it resembles something like the Alex Honnold free-climbing documentary "Free Solo," honing in on Hawk's episodes of hard-earned failure, of slamming his body to the ground countless times and getting back on the board.
Para quem é de fora do universo (como eu), o documentário se estende para além do necessário em sua introdução. O pior que o ritmo é até ágil, tem realmente muita informação e todos os personagens têm histórias interessantes, mas não há um grande atrativo que convença o público a assistir a essas duas horas.
Todavia, ao final, explorando o limite do corpo, do tempo e de suas perspectivas de vida, o documentário engrandece de uma tal forma, que você universaliza o esporte e ainda reconhece os feitos. Se tivesse um trabalho um pouco mais equilibrado no início, seria muito melhor, mas para quem é fã do esporte, certamente encontrará aqui um filme muito competente e digno de levar do êxtase à emoção. Mesmo que às vezes endeuse os retratados, jamais perde sua humanidade.
