Haunted by death-obsessed men of action, Un Flic (A Cop) is a fitting final act for noir master Jean-Pierre Melville
Delon and Crenna paint an idealized portrait of masculine camaraderie, one that’s exposed at the end of Melville’s bracing last testament as a soul-shattering illusion.
As far as swan songs go, Jean-Pierre Melville's Un Flic is a fascinatingly garbled tune that teems with formal inconsistencies and yet still manages to carry a pained melody.
Though not among Melville's classics, Un Flic is a pleasure to experience.
The forcefulness and mystery of Mr. Melville's direction often generate an urgency that keeps the film from feeling vague. [30 Nov. 1979]
