In the hit-and-miss subgenre of horror anthologies, V/H/S/85 is a shining beacon. Filmmakers are given the space to explore a gamut of ideas, none of which feel restrained to fit a specific anthology mold.
The beauty of the "V/H/S" series is that it continues to showcase the infinite flexibility of found footage horror, giving thrilling collections of genre filmmakers a chance to strut their stuff and test the boundaries. And with "V/H/S 85," everyone means business.

The quality of the VHS series has varied over the years, but V/H/S 85 has gotten around some of the previous entries weakest link, the wrap around story. 85 simply plays out like a videotape that's been recorded over and over with an 80s style "investigative journalism" show, ala In Search Of... the wrap-around of sorts. And as with previous entries, the handful of shorts vary in quality, the VR episode the weakest, Scott Derrickson's Dreamtape the strongest IMO. All in all a nice way to get into the Halloween spirit.

We're presented with a mixed bag that feels emblematic of the series itself: Peaks and valleys have always been the norm.
When creative directors are given the chance to take big swings and actually do so, the result can bring about nightmarish experiences unlike anything out there. The glimpses of this in V/H/S/85 serve as a reminder of the value of the series and the visions it can ultimately provide a home for.
Whatever promise the “V/H/S” horror anthology franchise started with is barely present in V/H/S/85, a low-energy potboiler that promises to transport genre fans back to the analog past for some reason.
V/H/S/85, in terms of narrative, is the most different yet, Unfortunately, is still far from the spirit of the main series. Perhaps it's time for the strong directors of V/H/S to step aside and open up to the new generation of directors.

Short have interesting premises but they're so badly tied up, like the first on in the lake goes nowhere with no conclusion, the vr god starts great and then becomes wack, so does the locust one, the only with somewhat of a meaty writing is the investigator one

Unfortunately, this anthology does not manage to escape the mediocrity derived from its use of repetitive and limited narrative resources and the restrictions imposed by it. Nevertheless, in my point of view, it represents a slight improvement over V/H/S 99 and that makes it a bit more tolerable.Mind you. I know they're successful, but this type of horror anthology has run its course. For real.
