It’s a hard movie to embrace, and some of that stems from the entitlement that simmers in the background of the school, those who attend it, of the city, the monied elite and indeed the filmmaker herself, who narrates and does the questioning here. They’re no less victims, but as they admit, they “knew.”
It’s a painfully familiar story in the era of #MeToo and the Catholic Church’s abuse scandal, with the added agony that parents, teachers, and school officials were, to varying degrees, complicit.

What Haunts Us is an intense documentary that takes an objective look into events that caused a shocking number of Porter-Gaud high school alumni to commit suicide later in life. It is a strong film that we need in this social moment when #timesup for abusers. What Haunts Us normalizes calling abusers by their names and splashing their image across the screen. This bold film calls everyone to action and is a voice for the voiceless.

For those who find satisfaction in seeking justice What Haunts Us is a great film to watch. The dark and upsetting crime of sexual abuse is unraveled throughout this documentary as witnesses and victims come together to expose the conspiracy hiding behind Porter-Gaud’s most prestigious faculty member. Like other investigative discovery media, What Haunts Us shows actual archive footage of criminal cases, interviews of victims, and refreshingly animated scenes that help us visualize what we couldn’t picture ourselves. This film raises awareness to many communities to pay attention to who pays attention to your kids.

What's most effective about the film isn't just the events at Porter-Gaud or their aftermath; it's Tolmach's emphasis on the disturbing truth of how often abuse like this is allowed to occur.
"The worst crime you can commit is to take away someone's innocence." Director Paige Goldberg Tolmach, victim Guerry Glover and many other anonymous student lead the fight against sexual abuse and scandal that had been occurring at their alma mater, Porter- Gaud and many other Charleston schools for years. How did he get away with it for so long? "What Haunts Us" creatively depicts the pain and suffering many felt at the hands of their fellow coach, Eddie Fisher. The search for closure and safety for future generations pushes the victims to speak out against the violence with archived interviews from both side of the story. A must see for fans of the 2015 Academy Award winner for Best Picture, "Spotlight." I recommend this film for those who love uncensored documentaries about the search for justice.

When beloved teacher and coach Eddie Fischer is exposed for being a sexual predator and sexually abusing over 50 children, director Paige Goldberg Tolmach documents a true fight for justice. By watching this film you will also become aware of the injustice surrounding sexual abuse in the education system.
