Meticulously constructed and comprehensive look. ... Mostly, we have a fuller understanding of why Andre’s 46 years on this planet had such a lasting effect on so many people.
This is not a somber film, by any means, or a cautionary tale. It’s primarily a celebration of a one-of-a-kind talent, intended to put him back into his proper context. Specifically, Andre The Giant is about wrestling, and how one man helped pave the way for the sport’s 1980s boom.
None of my skepticism about the documentary's failure to cut quite deep enough or to get enough distance from its subject is close to damning. Andre the Giant was so captivating a figure, and Andre the Giant captures so much of how and why he was impossible to look away from. It's just that the unexpected pathos and humanity that he often brought into the ring leaves me also craving more of a man who, it could turn out, was just a myth wrapped in a bigger myth.

Andre the Giant is a fast-paced, thorough affair. But it’s hardly groundbreaking, with Simmons--via emulation instead of innovation--reviving an HBO format he previously claimed to have killed.
Pro wrestling is an entire industry built around an illusion, and it’s something that “Andre the Giant” often nods at, but often seems to brush aside in favor of focusing on the deep resonance it has with its fans.
