Throw a couple of actors into costumes straight out of the 'Beat It' video, add a few aliens that look like rejects from the Mos Eisley cantina, and you have the makings of syndication's latest interstellar offering.
Excellent tv show. I like the sens of humour , the fantasy & the characters.
It's not a great show, netherless I recommend it, for sure coz it's FUN ^^
An enjoyable show but not good enough to create a legacy. It had one of the most promising set ups for a sci fi series, many good ideas and lore worth discussing with friends. Then you realized that the show didn't use their assets well enough. The set up was: The Commonwealth was a civilization that spanned three galaxies with countless species and cultures. The captain of the flagship Andromeda was lured into a trap that was later counted as the start of a war that destroyed the Commonwealth and started a dark age with a decline of civilization and technology. To escape a superiority battle fleet he tried to pass as close as possible to a black hole and got trapped in it. 300 hundreds years have passed when he escaped the black hole. Everything he knows is gone and he wants to recreate the Commonwealth. This is the main arc of the series. I find this most entertaining as the struggles, failures and achievements are fun to watch. Then there is the tread of the Magog. A species that brings chaos, destruction and extinction to each planet they encounter. This treat is mostly underused until later seasons. This is a colossal waste. Some of the best episodes are about the treat of the Magog. Then a big arc is about the Nietzscheans. They are a race of genetically improved humans (Think more of removal of junk genes and some good improvements than super humans). They were the reason the Commonwealth was destroyed. They rebelled against it because they saw the decline of the Commonwealth and the inability to deal with the Magog. In their viewpoint the populations of countless worlds were eaten or used for the parasitic reproduction and the Commonwealth made peace with them instead of erasing the treat. I must admit that they have a least a point. Their downfall is that they could not replace the Commonwealth and began infighting. As I said on paper this is pure gold but in the show it was not used for its full potential. There are also some smaller ideas that could be extended. I give one example: There was a conflict with a species about the terraforming of planets. The species was biological so different that our biosphere was hell for them and their biosphere was hell for us. Each side was terraforming what would be paradise worlds for the others. This was only a small side story. Imagine what potential this could have for good stories. Now for the actors: I think everyone is O.K. Dylan Hunt is a good captain but a bit to credulous. Rev Bem (A Magog that found religion and sworn of his peoples ways) is my favorite character. He had the best background, was interesting and used for good story-lines. It is sad that he departed from the show. I like also Tyr Anasazi. He has always his own agenda and you never know what he will do. Beka, Harper ans especially Trance are a nice inclusion to the show. The main star is of cause the Avatar of the Andromeda. They created human like AIs with all implications. There are also some good stories about AIs and their relations. I think I sound much too negative. As I said the show is entertaining but not as good as Babylon 5 or later seasons of DS9. It was not that memorable but I will praise it for the ideas.
I have missed the series in the early 2000's and just dared to watch the first episode. I cannot believe how cheesy the acting and the action scenes were. And then I checked reviews online to the show, and people tell that the show turns worse after the first two seasons? I have to say I do not see why this is voted so high, next to pearls like Firefly or SGU. I will try a few more episodes but I am sceptical.
