The Tourist, directed by Chris Sweeney (and Daniel Nettheim for the final three episodes), knows how to play the quiet scenes alongside the crash and bang. ... The Tourist might be his [Jamie Dornan's] best work yet. He takes advantage of a script that lets him stretch his metaphorical muscles as well as the more literal ones, abundant as they are.
With sharp dialogue, clever plotting, and career-best work from Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald, this is a great little thriller, a show that constantly keeps you guessing and entertained in equal measure.

Jamie Dornan is driving thru the backcountry of Australia, when he's in an accident that lands him in the hospital with amnesia. On his quest to find the truth, things quickly veer out of control. This has echoes of the Coen Brothers, namely Fargo: It's stylishly shot without being arty, the tension ebbs and flows, the violence is solidly staged and there are eccentric characterd, esp. Danielle Macdonald as the wanna-be detective who's channeling Merritt Wever's endearing bumbling style. Dornan is constantly compelling as he navigates the confusion and frustration (not to mention his ever-present bulging biceps). The narrative continues to surprise and the direction is always assured, creating an imminently watchable crime mystery that will grab your rapt attention from the beginning. (Review based on the first 3 of 6 one-hour episodes)

This series is funnier than the first, by which I mean it’s funnier more often. The type of humour is the same, all anchored by a wonderful performance from Dornan playing a character who has long since stopped being upset and terrified and is now just fed up.
Even if you struggle to follow exactly who wants what and why they are seeking revenge or a big payout, the show skates by on its charms. The Tourist proves that even if every project has not been able to showcase Dornan’s charms, he certainly has an ample supply at his disposal.
An unpredictable, edge-of-your-seat mystery that startles you with laugh-out-loud moments of ridiculousness, The Tourist is The Bourne Identity meets Priscilla Queen of the Desert with elements of Monty Python – an unusual thriller in which Dornan shines.
It’s a bit of a rockier road in terms of quality, but there’s an admirable lunacy to the storytelling here that holds it together, throwing in new twists and memorable characters in a manner that’s reminiscent of prime Coen brothers, wherein one never knew what was going to happen next, and it was all darkly humorous at the same time.
It’s only when the show makes its grand breakthrough in the final third that “The Tourist” gets a much needed influx of energy. Still, it’s another example of something in this show that feels like it should work in the abstract, but in practice simply feels like slapping on an extra layer without properly seeding that spirit throughout.
Pretty terrific TV. This is Fargo, Season One, set in the Australian outback, done well. Jamie Dornan I remember from Gal Godot's Heart of Stone (also recommended). Danielle Macdonald stands out here as her heart is the biggest.
The familiar tropes are there:
- The amnesiac who can't even remember his own name,
- The low-self-esteem police woman, trying to to self-actualize,
- The mean psychopath killer,
- The effective use of low-budget, no-budget sets...
And yet it's well plotted and more fun than Fargo S1 as it has more humor and less gore and less cruelty. Season 2 is so far unseen by me

It seems like the media critics who gave this show an 81 submitted their reviews after the first two episodes. But shows are not supposed to be rated based on the pilot episode, but on the overall quality of the season as a whole. The first two episodes were very good, which makes the disappointment that much greater when the show begins its decline in episode 3. I was hoping the fourth, fifth and sixth episodes would somehow Hail Mary to make up for the outrageously, unrealistic scenarios, cosmetic plot additions and trying-too-hard-to-be-edgy character arcs, but they did not. It only got worse. I couldn’t even get myself to watch the last 10 minutes of the last episode because it was that painful to get through. Overall, this show is more like a 61, maybe 62.

Top tier production values and endearing performances meet really asinine writing. Characters are constantly doing and saying objectively dumb ****.
Critics sure are easily impressed these days.
