It’s broad-brush stuff for the most part – especially when it comes to Gene and the co-workers, who are allocated about one and a half characteristics each and not given much to do with them. But Falcone and McCarthy are great to watch, and the central relationship between their alter egos gives the whole thing enough charm, warmth and heart to get by.
The irony is that it’s actually a pretty solid B in terms of most of its individual aspects, and it’s only when it tries to jam all of them together into a cohesive whole that the seams start to show. ... As is, the show ends less on a dramatic question mark about the grand nature of the War In Heaven and more on what the whole series, ultimately feels like: a slightly sweet, not especially eventful shrug.

It’s so heavy handed that it actually works. Silly, stupid and sweet but with an actual message that may need to be heavy handed right now. That message short hand essentially being we should strive to not harm. I’m personally a fan of the shows religious/spiritual notion of many paths leading to the same destination—and I’m saying that as an agnostic who tries his best to do no harm and wants to leave this mortal coil better than he found it regardless of what’s next (even if it’s nothing). Peace be upon you metacritic.

Episode One was very funny. The characters in the office are delightful. I'm interested enough to keep going. Peculiar premise!

There is a sweetness here and naiveté. Falcone’s heart is clearly in the right place, but all his goodwill is undone by a narrative that is both too simple and overly convoluted, underdeveloped characters, and chintzy production design.
Unfortunately, this introductory batch ends with such a shrug that it’s hard to imagine that anyone will be eagerly waiting to see whether Clark saves the world.
We’re still not sure of God’s Favorite Idiot will right itself or just become a train wreck. The second episode definitely gave us signs that it will try to make McCarthy’s character more than an ad-lib machine.
For every witty move there is a terrible attempt at getting laughs, such as a running joke about Clark’s bowel movements. I suspect this will be no one’s favourite show.
So many moments in “God’s Favorite Idiot” feel brutally underconsidered. ... “God’s Favorite Idiot” is just sad. What a waste of precious time in the career of a talented performer.
It's an algo turd + money grab by Melissa McCarthy. Period. The inanity of the dialogues are what young people call cringe.
