On the basis of its pilot--the sole episode available for review--it's a pleasant show, a little on the old-fashioned side formally. With a quality cast that includes Vanessa Hudgens, Danny Pudi, Ron Funches, Alan Tudyk and Christina Kirk, it seems crafted to sit compatibly alongside the returning "Superstore."
I think it's hysterical.
I saw the trailer months ago & thought it looked like a great idea...then I forgot about it....then recently saw 8 episodes are already on Hulu. I checked metacritic & saw middle-of-the-road reviews, but so far I've watched 6 & think it's totally funny. In fact many of the comedy lines are easily something I could see on Big Bang Theory, & still I think the comedy 'timing' is better orchestrated here.
Vanessa Hudgens: I knew the name from always hearing about the Disney HighSchoolMusical craze...then I saw the movie Spring Breakers, which makes me cringe thinking how vile the 3 girl characters were in it (but still recommend & especially James Franco was hauntingly brilliant).
Then I saw her on a talk show & thought "omg she's totally likeable & funny".
On Powerless, she's a confident breath of fresh air, great self-deprecating comedy **** steals the screen as the total beauty keeping her head held high as the world craps on her. I'm a new fan.
The guy who plays the boss, Van Wayne (Bruce's castaway cousin desperate to gain a shred of dignity) plays 'pathetic' hysterically.
Honorable mention to the actress playing (Jackie?) Van's assistant putting up with him.
Everyone's pretty good here, I think the rest of the cast will continue to grow into their **** at least they 'have' characters, which is a good sign.
Just the concept itself, working at Wayne Securities in Charm City (outside of Gotham) where 'super villans' are always flying around blowing stuff up like it's just everyone's normal day-to-day work week is much more original than just another Hero Show (or Office Show).
So far (6 episodes I've seen), there seems to be a world of new office situations, that wouldn't take place in other offices, available.
I hope it keeps going.
Is a funny TV Show, with a good and charismatic cast. They needs improve the jokes, is the only thing that i found it forced.
I want to see the next episodes. It was a good start.
Powerless wants to be more than a typical workplace comedy, but its own premise (hey, isn't superhero fatigue hilarious?) is its kryptonite. [Feb 3/10 2017, p.101]
Most of the jokes miss their mark; the show is at its best when it portrays the casual indifference that the citizens of Charm City have developed to their daily doses of chaos.
The new show has permission from DC Comics to poke fun at DC superheroes, but what comes across more forcefully is a weariness with the superhero-overload in TV and movies right now.
Based on the premiere, this show looks really cute and clever. The cast is great and I LOL'd a few times. Vanessa Hudgens is adorable and Danny Pudi is in great form. I'll be back!
I think people are being too hard on this show.
It's not highly ambitious and the show kind of works in that regard.
Some of the jokes are really funny. The actors/comedians do what they can.
I like them all. Alan Tudyk does his thing, and he does it well.
Great to see Danny Pudy, Ron Funches, Christina Kirk again.
Vanessa Hudgens' enthusiasm really works when surrounded by her more or less crazy co-workers.
The problem that I see with this show is, that it's actually too unambitious, and I mean the writing.
The stories the writers come up with don't match the concept and the premise of the show.
Sure, set the bar low, you jump over it easily. I just wished, they would set the bar a little higher.
In addition, some episodes totally miss out on any super-hero/-villain related theme
and thus feel merely like and "office" show. That's unacceptable.
The writers need to up their game.
Well, never give up hope!
Powerless captures a world where the extraordinary is ordinary and the ordinary becomes the extra-ordinary.
The concept, amazing though, I still feel is being executed poorly. Some episodes sometimes make me ask myself why am watching the show but then they surprise me again. I strongly think they could do better with the story and the characters could use more layers and drama.
The first DC comedy is a fail. I had high expectations. It didn't deliver. The show is unfunny and predictable. The supporting actors are so annoying. The only good thing about the show is Vanessa Hudgens, but even she cannot save it. All in all, the show is a waste of time.
The actors are great, the writing is horrible, the show has the cheapest jokes ever, characters are cliche of the worst kind.
What a waste of great actors and viewers time.
