There are superficial similarities to “Game of Thrones” — five contenders for an empty throne, a storyline about two girlhood friends on opposite sides of a power struggle. But it’s this focus on people that truly unites the two series, and qualifies “Shōgun” to take up the mantle of thrillingly transportive event TV.

Truly an amazing production. The acting is absolutely brilliant. This is how you bring true diversity into TV not by being "woke". If Anna Sawai doesn't get all the awards she deserves it will be a crime - not that awards mean anything, as they are all political and now very woke.

The long-gestating production — first announced in 2018 — was worth the wait. Gorgeous and immersive from the very first frame, the new Shōgun is a stunning epic that never lets big-budget set pieces overshadow the human drama at its core.
Co-creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks have assembled a fine team of directors and a greatly talented ensemble cast to deliver engrossing appointment-TV with a cinematic level of achievement.
If you come here expecting the Battle of Sekigahara, you’ll be disappointed. But subtlety and cleverness can be exciting too.
Watching “Shōgun" is a you-are-there-you-are-not-there experience — both bracing and chilly, not consistently engaging yet (paradoxically) always engaging, “Shōgun" draws you in, but never quite makes you feel welcome to be there.
His [Blackthorne's] journey toward “enlightenment” and his unconvincing affair with Mariko are thinly sketched—and, because “Shōgun” is at pains to foreground the regents’ war, he has more to offer the narrative as a source of discord and of new martial technology than as a romantic hero. In theory, elevating Mariko and Toranaga to primary characters is the “correct” update, helping to avoid another “whitewashed” tale about Japan. But both are so bound by repression and secrecy that they’re almost doomed to be dramatically inert.
Fantastic second implementation of the book template with equally fantastic actors who could have been longer. The biggest plus is the original Japanese language! Extremely exciting series with some WTF moments (Especially the last episode) and deviations from the story to the first film adaptation with Richard Chamberlain from 1980.

This would be a great show were it not for the insistence in projecting "modern day" western degeneracy onto 17th century Japanese culture. But I don't think western media is capable of making "great" anymore now that its been taken over by activist weirdos. Eastern media, based on traditional eastern culture, made entirely without the input or "assistance" of western weirdos is the future. Ironically, this show proves it can work.

Episode 1 & 2 were decent. But the show falls off a cliff in episode 3. Doesn’t even feel like the same show. Hopefully it can get back on track but yikes. Episode 3 was shockingly bad.

Una serie con unos niveles de produccion altos pero con una construccion de personajes y dialogos, que en el caso de los personajes occidentales es de chiste. Me resulta imposible empatizar con Blackthorne, es de traca. Por otro lado no me explico las criticas positivas que está recibiendo esta serie...

On voit de suite que cette série a fait l’objet des plus grands soins… elle semble précise et rigoureuse… mais également très lente. Mais son plus gros problème, son putain de problème, c’est le doublage… ou plutôt l’absence de doublage français des protagonistes japonais ! seuls les Européens (les ‘étrangers’) sont doublés !
Or, veuillez me pardonner mais je pige que dalle au japonais… et les longues séances de lecture de sous-titres… comment vous dire cela ? ah oui… ça me casse très sévèrement les couilles !! et comme de bien entendu, il va de soi que les Japonais se taillent la part du lion en ce qui concerne les dialogues, puisque ça se passe chez eux, en effet !
On constate bien évidemment que la série est très bavarde, ce qui rajoute à l’ennui largement prodigué ici. Franchement, tout cela fait roupiller à l’insu de son plein gré et ces ‘complots’ pour prendre ou reprendre le pouvoir ne font que rajouter à la léthargie générale. Bref, j’ai zappé aussi vite que possible cette série particulièrement assommante !
