Doom Eternal's first expansion, The Ancient Gods — Part One, stumbles in a few areas, but it's ultimately a damn good addition to the foundation laid earlier this year. All said it's a ripping good time despite its blemishes.
DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part One offers a meaty expansion that doesn’t dramatically differ from the base game, and despite a crushing difficulty and dodgy platforming sections, it's an essential purchase for those clamouring for their next DOOM fix.
Like most DLC it doesn’t introduce much in the way of new ideas but if you enjoyed Doom Eternal you’re going to love these new levels and their uncompromising challenge.
Despite some new and enduring weak spots, Doom Eternal's frantic combat (mostly) continues to shine through. Once you get back into the swing of the action, the rock-paper-scissors design philosophy still results in a great time. I just wish Doom Eternal could get out of its own way.
The Ancient Gods Part 1 does what Doom expansions always used to: provides more Doom, but makes it harder. Its new enemies are more of an annoyance than a fun challenge but there were already more than enough tricks up Eternal’s sleeves to build on for increasingly tough battles. I recommend a bit of practice on Eternal proper before you dive into this DLC, but once you do you’ll find that the rush of combat is as satisfying as ever.
One of the best FPS ever created. High skill ceiling. High replayability. Next step in the genre. Checkout @UnderTheMayo on youtube, amongst others, for becoming a badass demon slayer. You will probably be yawning while playing other (generic/mainstream) shooters after playing this. Worth every penny including the DLCs. Stop reading and buy this now!
Doom Eternal base game I a 9 o 9.5. This is 6. it is excessive difficult in an artificial way. They just throw at you lot of super demons waves in small arenas time and time again. Not exploration at all, basically DLC feels cheaper that base game and boring as a chore sometimes. Scenarios are not well designed, they are just interconnected arenas where some ones are really excessive difficult in a bad way, just imagine they put you in a small arena with not too much room or option to run away and they toss you waves of demons at you face where basically you run out of option because they are a lot and hit you at the same time, game is overwhelming and you die in unfair ways several times until in one chance you pass, but not out of you skills but a mix of skills and “lucky”, checkpoints are also scarce to stretch the duration of the game artificially. All in all, cheap difficulty , think of completely the opposite to Dark Souls difficulty. Totally regret I bought the DLC. Doom Eternal base game is awesome but Ancient Gods idéela just like a cheap designed game, it is like Mercenaries mode in Resident Evil in highest difficulty level, that’s all it is when you remove the story from the equation.
I did not enjoyed this at all. Production quality is perfect so thats why the over average score.
Music: instead of the metal a techno like electronic pump goes during 85÷ of the fights, frustrates the absolute crap out of me. I have tuned down the music to 20÷ after an hour (in a DOOM game...)
Difficulty: they trippled down on this. More enemies in a tighter space dragged out to 5 minute fights, its boring, tiresome and frustrating.
Difficulty is tuned up sometimes by taking away visibility, slowing u down (in a doom game) or hord you with stuns when you would need to be precise. Sure I might need to get good, but I had none of these problems in Doom 2016 or Doom Eternal base. This DLC was not the good direction for me and not the experience I expected
I rated the main game 5/10. Ancient Gods DLC 1 is just more of the same but more fighting, harder enemies, and new enemies. And even more problems that constantly make me say "what a garbage game".
DLC 2 is slightly better, but I still wouldn't recommend it.
This is not fun compared to original (vanilla?) Eternal. There is no "challenge" besides having walls of demons thrown at you. Majority of the fights you wont even be able to see due to electric arcs, fire, smoke and just everything being in your face. You want to appeal to the Ultra Hardcore/Nightmare fan base leave that **** in difficulty modes. There is no time to plan or clever moves due to you not having time to do anything. Also Marauders now there are two of them to remind you how they ruin the game when they are on screen. Hey ID nobody liked your stupid new demon deal with it and admit they are badly designed and remove them or nerf them.
SummaryThe fight's not over! Your victory over the hordes of Hell spared Earth from a perilous, demon-infested fate, but saving humanity has upset the delicate balance of power in the heavens. Become the DOOM Slayer once again and set things right in DOOM Eternal's first single-player expansion, The Ancient Gods, Part One.
