I’m so glad that Namco Bandai re-released these games during Klonoa’s twenty-fifth anniversary year. They hold up remarkable well over time and have aged beautifully. I sure hope we see more of Klonoa going forward.
If you’re expecting completely remade games, this isn’t the remaster collection for you. But if you want to relive your childhood memories and frustrations with Klonoa, the Phantasy Reverie Series is the way to do it. Getting two cult-classics in one is a fantastic deal, and if you can look past the quirks and situate yourself firmly in 2001, you’ll find these games just as perfect as you remember them. And if you missed out on the Klonoa hype as a kid but enjoy early 2000s platformers and want to see what all the fuss is about, there’s no better time to dive into the dream than now.
Please buy these games, I love them. You might have heard they're a bit short (at my age that's a plus) but they're amazing and worth the price whatever it's at. The second game is significantly longer than the first. No spoilers but get to the ending of the first game, the main story is a delight but the way it puts the series in context with its ending is one of my favorite parts, that and the simple but enjoyable gameplay. The direct sequel (included in this package) and GBA spinoffs have more difficulty to offer and harder puzzles if that's what you're after. Replayed these games a lot of times in my life. PLAY IT!
A well executed perfect remaster of two amazing early playstation era games. Flawless in both execution and substance, with small quality of life improvements that make all the difference in the longrun.
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series brings together the two main games of the franchise, updating aesthetic elements and adapting details to the present time without mischaracterizing what made the series stand out in the not-so-distant past. Even with some occasional dated details, the collection is great for introducing the brand to a new generation.
Phantasy Reverie Series is a great opportunity to play again (or discover for the first time) two cult platform games. Some elements feel outdated, even with the graphic improvements, but they are still fun to play.
Are you looking for a platform game that is both colorful and original? Then Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is probably for you! On this compilation which brings together the first two opuses of the Klonoa series, Bandai Namco and the Monkey Craft studio deliver a solid redesign work, especially notable on the founding part. Despite a simple technique, the levels are colorful and very enjoyable to navigate. Of course, the level design remains that of a title from the end of 1990 and the beginning of 2000, which is felt in particular on Klonoa 1. Despite everything, the epic is enchanting and finds its climax during the second episode. In short, a nice nostalgic parenthesis!
Lacking some fan service, the two games within Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series still demonstrate why the franchise is so loved by many. Huge difficulty spikes stop the games being as well balanced as they should be, but the majority of the experience is a blast. It’s fun to negotiate the well-designed worlds and collect up everything they have to offer. You’ll just wish the rewards were more substantial.
It's definitely more geared towards kids, but the games are still very fun, simple, and enjoyable enough as a callback to retro 3D platformers. In a day and age oversaturated with dark and gritty games, or third person shooters, having a cutesy mascot platformer is a breath of fresh air. It helps that these games are fun to play, aesthetically pleasing to look at, and not too hard on the bank.
To bring from the past Klonoa's Saga iswith no doubt a fantastic idea. But I think there are things that could have been improved. If the entire two games were rebuilt using Unity Engine then is not a Remaster but a remake. You're not using the original game but making it from scratch. Hence, taking that into consideration I believe it is not the best possible remake for these games. Klonoas 2 Lunateas Vail is OK. Graphics are correct and the shadows give to the game a more realistic view which looks good in my opinion. However Klonoa 1 phantom of Phantomile model's are not looking great. Like I said, since the moment you're using Unity, you're redoing the game, then the game is NOT a remaster but a remake. If you're remaking the game, do not copy the models like they were because they could be looking a little bit more polish. The end of the game against the final boss is looking awful, with bad gigantic polygons. The mechanic they've included that allows you to speed up cinematic scenes is accurate. The mechanic they included for double jumping then other controller is plugged is just unnecessary, it is a bad idea, this game had no multiplayer, and two people aren't going to play together while only one of them is in charge of a new double jump that wasn't thought for the levels, and breaks the game... I can't give it more than a 6 because I think as a Klonoas fan this can be done much better.
I don't know who this is for. After finishing the first game I have to say this is an abysmal waste of time. Floaty, crappy controls that make platforming a chore. A double jump that revolves around having an enemy in your possession. Some of the most tedious level design I have ever seen in a 90's platformer. Also half the time your bullets don't grab the enemies. Which makes climbing sessions a complete chore. Like I say I have no idea who this game is for as it is utterly terrible. Save the money and watch for it on Gamepass or PS+.
Played the Klonoa phantasy reverie series demo and wow, it's rough and depressing and soulless of how the charm of the wii remake was taken away for ps1 sound quality gibberish and weird 90's character design and how unlike crash and spyro's remakes which feels like ps4 game doesn't feel new and instead feels like ps1 game.
