A true gem. It's a breezy, easy-to-play game that will leave you wondering where the hours went. With such a beautifully refined title now under its belt, it's hard to see how Sunflower will top it.
  2. We can safely say that the combat and trading aspects of the game contain enough depth to be good examples of each genre. Not benchmark, but good. Put them together though and you do have a game that deserves to be called great.
  3. Once you get used to the level of detail and the specific German interface, (right mouse button, right!) and really get into the beautiful surroundings and music and the fantastic feeling of conquering a new world, there is no end to fun.

Definitely an RTS for cerebral types, but it's a welcome change from tank rushes. [May 2003, p.76]
  5. Has its charms for those with some patience and a thirst for a different take on real-time strategy.

If you're in the market for an interesting little economic city-builder, you could do worse. [Apr 2003, p.95]

What it actually does is establish a higher degree of trial and error and experimentation. Unfortunately, that may turn of newcomers of the genre to this title.
  8. The gameplay is fun, and while I wouldn't go so far as to say addicting, is still engrossing because of the exploration aspects.

The game shines when you focus entirely on building up your cities and taking care of your people.

Although 1503 offers only a few modest innovations, it's still a solid example of how gratifying it is to spread your own civilization, whether it's this century or 500 years ago.

Even though it's a sequel, or maybe because it's a sequel, there's really nothing new here. Start with a ship of goods, three hours later you have a thriving sixteenth century metropolis crawling with busy citizens. [June 2003, p.86]
  12. While it's true that 1503 A.D. does have a number of changes and improvements over the original game, it's really just more of the same, but fleshed out a bit.

The dated visuals won't grab you, but the game's depth keeps things interesting if not addicting. [June 2003, p.98]
  14. A game that passes the time, and melds together a number of fine titles, but whose every individual element can be found in a more satisfying form elsewhere. [PC Gamer UK]
