Beat Saber is the perfect recipe for a rhythm game. Easy to pick up, difficult to put down, and a wealth of complexity to explore once it has you hooked.

The Oculus Rift version is as good as ever and now offers even more value for money thanks to the new features, it is a little shame that there’s no cross-buy support for Oculus Quest. And as for the mobile version, there’s a reason why Beat Saber made VRFocus’ ‘Top 10 List’ for launch day purchases as you can now take Beat Saber with you anywhere. Either version of Beat Saber is great for new and veteran VR fans alike, and VRFocus’ score applies to both.

And of course, if you’re on PC it’s endlessly expandable with custom tracks thanks to the level editor and mods.) It should absolutely be a go-to for introducing anyone to virtual reality.

Beat Saber feels like the title that has propelled VR gaming into the mainstream and its effect on inspiring a whole host of other developers to enter this space cannot be underestimated. The core gameplay loop here is one the whole family can get involved in and it is not an over exaggeration to say this game can consume hours once it gets its hooks in. The BTS tracks are a welcome addition and if there is one band whose music seems to fit perfectly with this, it surely has to be theirs. Energetic, bombastic and addictive - prepare to be replaying Dynamite a lot to perfect its tough beat map. While some will argue the game itself and subsequent packs are ever so slightly overpriced, with multiplayer now active and the ability to add as many custom songs as one desires, for any VR owner this is simply a must-buy.

The Quest controllers are much more precise, and together with the lack of cables transforms this from a good game to a truly great one.

Beat Saber is the perfect example of what all VR rhythm games should be. Its gameplay mechanics hit right at the target’s center, glueing the player for more and more games.

This along with VR chat was the reason why I bought a VR headset (HTC Vive).
    It's a must-have game for VR headsets.
    I love rhythmic games

Very fun game, great intro to show your friends and family how fun VR can be.

Very fun game, great intro to show your friends and family how fun VR can be.

There are some caveats to this positive review:

    1. This game studio has since been bought by Facebook, and this likely gives a vague sense of unease to many people, including myself.

    2. The included songs are great and the developers have semi-regularly been releasing paid DLC packs of more songs to play, but custom maps are required to take this game from a solid chunk of time to near infinite playability. The custom songs can be a bit hit-or-miss, but some of them are just unbelievably well-made and the sheer number of them helps to support the relatively small number of original songs included in the game. Plus, no matter how good the original songs are, most people who play this game will have more fun playing songs they recognize rather than Eurobeat EDM #7.

If you're ok with those caveats, you'll have a great time and get a great workout from this game and it'll probably help you convince all your other friends to go out and buy a VR system of their own.

Perhaps I'm alone on this, but I found Beat Saber's gameplay to be completely uninteresting, and that's... well all that Beat Saber has.
