Pelit (Finland)Oct 12, 2016Games like I am Setsuna are created very rarely these days. It’s not perfect, but it is a promising first game from Tokyo RPG Factory. [Sept 2016]

Jul 20, 2016If you are looking for a classic JRPG experience, you will love I Am Setsuna. If you are looking for the second coming of Chrono Trigger, however, you will be disappointed.

Game World Navigator MagazineAug 23, 2016Non-combat side of the game is not nearly as diverse. Our PCs don’t play cards, there’s no more than 10 side quests and not even a hint of romance in this cold air. Still, it’s hard to put I Am Setsuna away – not because the story or the combat are that good on their own, but because it really captures that old school JRPG atmosphere. [Issue#211, p.69]
-
Aug 21, 2016A fantastic game that gave me a nostalgic kick whilst having its own unique charm and style.
-
Aug 18, 2016I am Setsuna is a very solid RPG, with classic mechanics, really fun and nice retro like graphics, worst are controls on PC his plain history.
-
Jul 19, 2016I AM Setsuna is a fine short little experience that brings back nostalgic feelings for the 16-bit era of role playing games, but doesn't do much to explore the twenty years of depth since then.
-
Jul 30, 2016I Am Setsuna is a likeable JRPG, which can be compared to the tribute acts. They can seamlessly play the classic compositions of the band they love, but they are never as good as the originals.
-
Edge MagazineSep 26, 2016If it isn't as memorable as the games to which it owes its existence, it shares some of their best parts. [Oct 2016, p.112]
-
Aug 8, 2016I Am Setsuna is a huge throwback onto 90’s classic jRPGs, and it’s clearly and loudly inspired by Chrono Trigger. The battle system is deep and satisfying, the soundtrack is great and the storyline is interesting even if a little bit predictable. There are some frustrations in the farming system and loot crates. Furthermore, budget limits are evident in the environments and enemy patterns.
-
Jul 25, 2016The game manages to do this throwback to Chrono Trigger with care, while throwing in a few new ideas of its own, even if some don’t work in its favour.
-
Jul 22, 2016If you're aching for a familiar and exciting JRPG, there's better to be found out there. While this is a serviceable option, there are plenty other more memorable ones out there.
-
Jul 19, 2016A beautiful JRPG that captures the spirit of the genre's early hits while playing things a tad too safely.
-
Jul 19, 2016Setsuna is a good game and that’s really the problem, it’s just good. The games intention of being a love letter the to JRPG’s of yesteryear have kept the game void of any originality and spark. The game is stuck in the shadow of those games, playing it far too safe to rear a head of its own.
-
CD-ActionOct 14, 2016I was really hoping I Am Setsuna will turn out to be the promised spiritual successor of Chrono Trigger. Instead it’s more of a walk through a museum of obsolete ideas that lack some binder which would make the game as engaging as Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy V. [10/2016, p.60]
-
Aug 2, 2016Design missteps and combat randomness don’t defeat this sombre tale.
-
PC PowerPlayAug 27, 2016I Am Setuna might fill a current market gap, but it doesn't do anything new or interesting. [Issue#254, p.53]

Jul 19, 2016Those golden-era JRPGs are beloved because they were packed with memorable locations, characters, and combat. I Am Setsuna unfortunately falls short on all three counts, and instead delivers an average and forgettable adventure, albeit one with wonderful music.
