A great, merciless speedrunning platformer and twitch shooter with a mediocre presentation.

As difficult and repetitious as Lovely Planet gets however, rarely is it frustrating. It’s hard to hold a grudge against a game so whimsical, especially when it delivers even the most nefarious of its tricks with such stone-faced innocence.

Lovely Planet is pure FPS madness: don't let the cartoon look deceive you, because this game requires skills and dedication.

Those who want to use speedruns as a demonstration of their twitch skills will likely find Lovely Planet a 50-hour obsession. Nobody else really need apply.

Lovely Planet wants to hammer home that it is sweet, crazy and colorful. But unfortunately, this is all just a facade. Underneath it's a superficial shooter that offers little variety and I can always shoot down the same boring tube passages.

There’s a lot to enjoy in Lovely Planet, so long as you don’t actually have to play the game.

Somehow, thisI think as a genre, First Person Shooters have one of the most tedious core mechanics: moving a reticle then clicking a button. Somehow, this game has shown me that FPS can be fun. I really love this game. It's hard, so you have to replay levels over and over and over, but that's ok, because you will get better, then you will feel awesome. Actually, as you play you'll discover it's not that hard. You just need to be patient and fire at the right time, (although with the first person view, the jumping is still hard.) The soundtrack is amazing. I can't help but feel good when I play this.

Unfortunately the PS4 port doesn't use gyro aiming, so play this on PC with a mouse, or gyro.

Simple mechanics with enough to wrap your mind around - like discovering new ways to shave milliseconds off your best times and climbingSimple mechanics with enough to wrap your mind around - like discovering new ways to shave milliseconds off your best times and climbing leader-boards - to make you not want to stop playing. The game lets you discover what the best way to beat a level is. And once you've found what works, perfecting the execution of your strategy is hella-fun! The visuals and music are obviously orgasm inducing - don't really need to go into much depth there. Buy it! You'll thank me. Expand

This difficult but rewarding game allows players to create amazing chain reactions of shoot this guy shoot this thing jump on the pad do a 180 shoot the apple before it hits the ground and finally touch the pole for 3 stars. Although the learning curve may be difficult for some to adapt through perseverance only can one truly have fun and enjoy this interactive art piece. A person who will only play for a couple of hours then put the game down forever should not be quick to judge and those who believe it is repetitive have not been going for three stars. When I first picked up this game I had little knowledge on it. When I first saw the interesting art style I assumed it would lack in game play, but this game showed me that the beauty of this game stretches beyond the aesthetic. Expand

Most of the negative critic reviews are because of exactly this: it's too hard after the first world, especially if you take the style at face value and think it's a casual game. But if you like twitch shooters and/or failure meatgrinders like Super Meat Boy you will probably love this. That goes double if you are competitive or into speedrunning, as there are integrated leaderboards, even showing whether you got perfect accuracy on the level or not. Expand

This game oozes of style and design, and anyone who plays this is absolutely going to hit the fabled "Flow" state. Each gameplay mechanic is thought through and serves a purpose, and the worlds keep introducing new and challenging concepts, At no point did i feel cheated after a death, because i could always see how it was my fault and how to evade it

    easily a 10/10 game

And then you reach world 4.

World 4 introduces fog and homing bullets that come out from nowhere. And pop, just like that, the game lost its charm. No longer could a skilled player with good reaction times beat levels on the first try, now you had to restart the level over and over, until you memorised when and where the bullets would come out. When you finally beat the level the game would mock you by telling you it had hid an enemy on the level, and force you to go back to looking for it.
