  • Summary: The old gods have forgotten this land. No one could save our people when darkness started spreading and collecting human souls for its army. Odallus is a classic exploration/action game, inspired by Ghosts’n Goblins, Demon’s Crest and Castlevania.

Regardless of a few minor gripes, Odallus: The Dark Call is a worthy addition to any metroidvania fan's library and is worth the asking price.

Odallus: The Dark Call is a great adventure game that hearkens back to the 8-bit era. Combat is fun, and there's a good balance to the difficulty; bosses, save for the final one, can be defeated once you know their patterns.

Odallus gives players a sense of nostalgia while bringing it’s own flavour to the table. This medieval fantasy game is challenging, pretty, and most importantly, fun.

Odallus is a game that wants to bring back the feeling of the first Castlevania but that's it. There's no innovation here, just the good ol' gameplay and MSX visuals. If that's what you want, it won't disappoint.

Odallus manages to capture the 8-bit feeling of early Castlevania games, without resorting in simple copy-paste techniques. On the other hand it could be benefited from more stages and a more firm decision over how difficult or easy it wants to be.

Strong on nostalgia and challenge, Odallus is a title that will obviously be appreciated by those who loved the NES era, and enjoy technical gameplay and inspired pixel art.

+You can choose the area to go to after these areas are unlocked.
+You can come back to open up secrets later once you find items and upgrade for your character.
    +Boss fights are interesting.
+The pace is good, the movements are fluid.
+-The character is a bit slow at the beginning but he gets better with some upgrade.
    +No bugs whatsoever for me.
    +nice 8/16 bits graphics
    +superb soundtrack

I estimate it took me anywhere from 8 to 10 hours of gameplay for a full run, all items and secrets.

A lot of games claim to be retro and fail in many aspects. I'm proud to say that I'm HOOKED on this game. It takes me back to the SNES days with a feeling of bliss that I can't even describe. You need this game in your collection. GO Go Go!

As long as you don't get bogged down in the difficulty, it's very hard not to love this game.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the game is the gritty feeling and straightforward plot that is so very effective and stylistically reminiscent of dark fantasy like Berserk. You're thrown into a brutal world where you need to avenge your village and recover your son and every demon on the way has to die. It's surprisingly effective and doesn't get in your way at all. It meshes perfectly with the gameplay.

The difficulty and style of the game is vaguely reminiscent of a Dark Souls experience. Yes, the comparison is overused, but it's rather fitting in this case. In some respects it gave me more of what I wanted from a Dark Souls game than Dark Souls 3. Swift punishment for mistakes, a visible progression in your skill level aided by equipment, going from feeling outmatched by the environment to dominating it. Odallus has all of that.

If that sounds appealing to you and you're willing to wade through segments that might get annoying if you fail them repeatedly, then you'll probably enjoy Odallus.
