This DLC simply isn’t as good as the base game - unless you really like horror and really hate reading old texts in which case the reverse might be true. At any rate, this is a very good pretext for returning to one of the best games of the decade.

A splendid, moody elaboration of what makes Outer Wilds so special. [Eurogamer Essential]

Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye is a masterpiece living within another masterpiece. As a sequel, it’s brilliant. And if you take the two games together, as one single video game, then Outer Wilds deserves its space near the top of any list enumerating the greatest games of all time. If you want to argue with me, I suppose you’ll have to try it for yourself. [Recommended]

Echoes of the Eye diverges from the base game in some welcome ways, but it still feels like it’s a part of the same universe. It was a risk for Mobius Digital to squeeze another planet into Outer Wilds, which already felt like a complete package with more than enough mystery to unspool. But this spooky, mystifying expansion is an integral part of the experience, as well as a fantastic send-off for a special game.

Mobius managed to do it again. They nailed the base game and I was content with it. To be honest I was even a bit worried about this DLCMobius managed to do it again. They nailed the base game and I was content with it. To be honest I was even a bit worried about this DLC ruining the game's legacy by not living up to the base game's standards. I am so glad to say I was wrong. Extremely wrong in fact. The expansion has some frustrating parts but just like the base game, has very satisfying and meaningful outcomes. Highly recommend this to anyone who has played the base game and liked it! Full Review »

Just as the base game is one of the best games I've ever played, this is one of the best expansions I've ever played.

Just as the base game is one of the best games I've ever played, this is one of the best expansions I've ever played.

it does not feel like an integral part of the game that was kept out and you can play the base game without even knowing it exists and not feel like you're left out, yet somehow it finds a perfect place to fit into this supposedly whole and completed game and feels like it has always been there.

The expansion gives you more of the same, almost perfect gameplay of the base game while introducing new mechanics for puzzles, giving hints and telling the story. However, it does bring certain sections that are definitely not more of the same, playing more like a "traditional" horror game (traditional compared to the scary sections of the base game - looking at you, Dark Bramble) which feel like a very big departure from the base game's focus on "pure exploration" and I'll admit they can be frustrating at times, but there are only a few such sections and I ended up thinking of them as just another set of "puzzles" (except this time the riddles are not how to enter a locked room but how to evade or escape the scary stuff.)

The story being told is great and fits into the existing narrative perfectly, the visuals are some of the most stunning in the game and Andrew Prahlow's OST is as great as it has always been in the base game.

Overall I definitely recommend anyone who loved the original game to get a hold of this expansion.
