While not being an indie games enthusiast myself, I do wholeheartedly recommend this game – both to fans of pixel art aesthetics, and to those who just want to shoot a lot of stuff in an old school FPS. [13/2018, p.68]

In the end though, perhaps what sets apart Project Warlock from the very recent old-school shooter renaissance we’ve been seeing is that outside of inspiration and certain elements it doesn’t look any one thing from the ‘90s. Which in the end makes it special, and something well worth checking out.

Project Warlock is a fast-paced, fun and challenging old-school FPS, with a hint of RPG mechanics.

Project Warlock proudly points to the forefront of the genre and provides players with a nostalgic ride full of weapons of mass destruction and crowds of various hell creatures and other monsters. [Issue#291]

There really isn’t too much to say about Project Warlock because it’s really quite a simple game. There aren’t a ton of bells or whistles, but runnin’ and gunnin’ both feel solid.

Project Warlock is a tastefully designed throwback to an era of classic shooters and teenage escapism, and as one would expect, shooting things in this game is so damn gratifying.

A charming, but monotonous shooter bar any noteworthy elements.

Imagine that you can play as Duke in a Hexen world and shoot to monsters from Doom. Sounds fun? and it is! Fantastic full of action mazes are waiting to be killed by... shotgun, double shotgun, axe and many more. Almost 38 weapons, 8 spells and more or less 70 enemies. The great innovation in this genre are experience levels. You can make your hero better and better by killing, finding secrets and collecting treasures.
As for indie game Project Walock is huge.

I'm waiting for the Project Warlock 2!

For me action is the most important thing in gaming. I really don't mind the graphics but it is also cool in PW. Pixel-ed world where you are a pixel shooting to pixels by pixels :) The strongest advantage is that the game gives fuuuuuun. Collecting guns, casting spells, developing your character, and of course killing monsters is so fantastic that you even won't notice how the time past. IMHO must have it! Expand

Excellent sounds, art style, weapons feel so good to use, especially minigun (oh the sound), shotguns, magnum pistol, mage staff...
Can easily recommend, well priced with free soundtrack, no pre release dlc BS like we get from ea, ubisoft or others.
Can't wait what is coming next.

In Project Warlock, you run fast, you carry a large arsenal of weapons, and shoot everything that moves. What about the story? Don't worry about it, it's not important. Project Warlock takes you through several episodes, including Castles, Pyramids, Ice Fields, City Streets, and even Hell itself.

Project Warlock's biggest strength is the gameplay. You get a large arsenal of satisfying weapons, and diverse enemies to dispense with them, all while moving at an inhuman speed. The game has you collecting keycards and finding your way through sprawling, interconnected levels, like a modern Wolfenstein 3D. Also, your character is a Warlock so there are spells you can use and unlock in the game as well, whether it's just a torch to light up a dark area, or a freeze spell that turns enemies into immobile blocks of ice ready to be mowed down. Between each level you will enter the workshop, where you can spend points you earn in a level to upgrade your character. These upgrades consist of 3 types, character stats, spells, and weapon upgrades.

The only nitpicks I have with Project Warlock is that while the game does have secrets, it merely just consists of spamming the action key against walls until one opens. More cleverly designed secrets would have been appreciated. Also, the game on normal difficulty is too easy, there is a hard mode, but it acts more like a hardcore mode and doesn't give you any extra lives. A difficulty in between the two would benefit the game for veterans of the FPS genre such as myself. Lastly, the game gives out healthpacks too generously, I often found myself at the end of a level on full health, while still seeing healthpacks all over the ground. The healthpacks that are placed within the level are enough, enemies drop them too frequently and I never felt the urgency of my character on low health.

Nitpicks aside though, Project Warlock is more than a nostalgia trip. Whether you are a veteran of the FPS genre, or have never played the classics, you will enjoy blasting through this fast paced romp of a game. It's a classic formula with modern sensibilities that anyone who loves shooters must play.

This might sound good in theory as it offers a diverse selection of enemies and weapons, but overall it lacks a clear identity and ends up being somewhat of a mess.
Graphics are ugly - yes they're blocky and all retro, but there's pixel ART and there's pixel crap and unfortunately PROJECT WARLOCK falls in the latter category.
The level design is rather poor - early 90s style of just plain mazes.
With the current retro revival there's a lot better games out there for fans, there really isn't a reason to pick this one up.
