It almost becomes a rhythm game as you perfect the block-counterattack system, especially for the boss fights. And when you aren’t fighting some crazy mutant or saving the city from serial bombers, a casual swing through Manhattan at night is almost therapeutic.
Even something as simple as web-slinging provides a thrill, as players can delight in utilizing the speed of a swing to shoot Spidey forward before letting him freefall towards the streets below, only to anchor a nearby object with a web strand via the right trigger mere seconds before he goes splat.
Miles better than that stupid Batman clone called Amazing Spider-Man. The web swinging is great, you can reach ridiculous speeds like over 200 miles/hour. Great combat system with lots of combos, special attacks and web attacks. You can yank an enemy in the air and use him as a missile, pile-driving him into the ground and sending other enemies flying. Side missions will make you punch yourself in the face from the nail-biting difficulty, and that's a good thing.
If theres one thing I can say about Spiderman 3, its that its one of the greatest movie games ever. It is signifigantly underrated. Unlike the Superman Returns game, you can explore this large open world and play missions whenever you want. Theres a larger amont of content and the graphics are even better. The controls are also very responsive.
The sad part is that the most exciting portion of Spider-Man 3 is still the ability to swing around the city at high speeds. And since the swinging system hasn't really changed since the last game, it's frustrating to see the game's best feature be overlooked by the developers.
Rushed out for release and filled with problems, Spider-Man 3 is – not unlike its cinematic counterpart – a huge disappointment. It’s not a complete loss, and many gamers, particularly Spider-Man fans, will probably enjoy the game enough to merit the $60 asking price. Those without a huge attachment to the character would be better off spending the money on some trade-paper backs of the comic.
The focus of their next Spider-Man game should be making the combat feel as authentic to Spider-Man as they've done with the web-slinging. With a focus on improving the combat, the A.I., and more epic cineractives, Spider-Man 3 would have been a great game.
The frequent glitches and pop-up testify to a lack of preparation, and a question has to be asked about what exactly Treyarch has been doing for the past two years. [July 2007, p.89]
I remember enjoying this game back when it came out in 2007. Like it’s predecessor, it’s a sandbox game allowing you to swing around New York City as Spider-Man. As it came out 3 years after Spider-Man 2, it’s graphics are a step up. Breaking up crimes on the street like car-jackings, purse snatchers, muggers, gangbangers, robbers, and assailants can be fun. The game features different varieties of thugs who are affiliated with different fictional gangs you take down in the course of the game. One of my criticisms of the game is that the gangs were too cartoonish and outlandish, one was just a bunch of goth chicks. There are a large number of supervillains featured in the game including the ones from the movie (the second Green Goblin, Sandman, and Venom) and other villains from the comics like Lizard, Scorpion, Rhino, and Kingpin. The fight with the New Goblin at the beginning of the game with Peter out of his costume on the streets of Manhattan was probably my favorite boss battle in the game. The subway fight with Sandman is also fun. One feature of the game is Spider-Man gets his symbiotic black suit and your costume turns black at some point in the game, enhancing Spider-Man’s abilities and giving him a “rage mode” which is great. One cool feature in the game is it allows you to swing around the city with Mary Jane Watson, trying to impress her with the excitement and pleasure of soaring through the city's skies. After you take the symbiote off the suit in the church, Venom is the last villain you fight in the game.
Oh boy, on paper Spider-Man 3 should've been a superior sequel to Spider-Man 2. That game had some stellar swinging and some fun story and side content but was not without its flaws. Spider-Man 3 had the chance to remedy them as well as the fact that it being the first game to have a black suit that wasn't just an alt suit set high expectations
So how does the final title fare? It's not bad as some make it out to be but it ain't amazing either
Pros: The scale of the city is great and being able to freely explore subways and the sewers was a welcome addition. The number of interiors with no loading times is very impressive too
Spidey's swinging animations have some work put into it. The QTEs too have some of the most exciting looking set pieces animation wise
The various combos make combat feel varied and piledriving enemies from **** still feels fun as ever
Cons: Spider-Man feels weak against petty thugs. Gone is the simple dodge button in Spider-Man 2. Now it's replaced with a Matrix style automatic dodge that's timed. On paper this is cool but the bar drains too fast meaning there are instances were you get hit not because you didn't press dodge but because the timer ran out
The graphics look poor even for its time. Spider-Man 3 came out around the same era as Bully, God of War 2, Drake's Fortune and even Treyarch's own COD yet looks worse than all these games. Masked characters like New Goblin, Spider-Man, the Dragon Tail leader, etc all look fine as well as the vehicle models but boy are normal human models nightmare fuel
The QTEs are overused. I don't mind QTEs in games as a whole but Spider-Man 3 spams the hell out of them. Want to swing through a sewer? QTE. I think most of the reception would've been less harsh if they weren't excessive
Some mechanics from Spider-Man 2 are absent which would've benefited this game. You can no longer slingshot where ever you wanna be and can just do it in one location, gone is theaabilityto swing from helicopters and go to Liberty and Ellis Island and the air tricks feel like a downgrade too
Side content too is hit or miss. There's some cool ones like gang wars but the cool side stuff from Spider-Man 2 like stopping giant mechs, sending sick or injured civilians to hospitals, stopping a civilian frim falling are only reserved for one or two side missions
Overall Spider-Man 3 whilst not being awful doesn't feel like the leap Spider-Man 2 was from the 2002 game
A game that I struggled with a lot at the beginning but once I played it a bit more, I was finding it easier and easier. It is a very creative story that I have found very very entertaining.
To be honest as a huge fan of Spider-man I am just saddened to say that Spider-man 3 was a major let down. First of all nothing much has changed from Spider-man 2 and instead of adding more side stuff they reduced it. Now the side quests just consist of going out there talking to civilians and than beating up criminals, chasing them in a car beating their car and than beating them up and defusing bombs. I gotta admit defusing bombs was kind of cool but also got repetitive really fast. Plus there are no random events in the game unlike Spiderman 2, those random encounters show that any crime can happen in the city at any time and its up to Spider0man to stop it and that actually added to the feel of being spider-man but this game just threw all that out of the water. Plus the game has so many bugs its almost laughable. Ofcourse than comes the main storyline which doesn't exactly follow the movie's story and adds some new and bland villains which nobody really cares about fighting. And compared to spider man 2 once again the story is really short I beat in like 4 hours in one sitting and Spiderman 2 took me like 12 and 13 hours to complete thats how much they toned down and shortened this game. The main missions are nothing great some of them are fun but once again just like the rest of the game they get repetitive really fast. However I still see some good things about this game, the boss battles have been done really well and have been improved from Spider-man 2, but there are not that many boss battles in the game which is sad as they could have really added to the game. The game also allows you to put on the black spidey suite which just increases your health and the amount of damage you can inflict and take. Spidey is really waay overpowered when he puts that suit on which really kills any difficulty the game has to offer because if a boss fight or any other fight is going on way to long, you can just push a button and get into the black suite and destroy everyone. The game's music is good and builds up the mood and the voice is unsurprisingly good as it is done by the same actors who acted in the movie. I think the combat and swinging have been made easy and simplified which is not really a problem for me as it is really easy to get used to them unlike Spider-man 2. The graphics are just bad, I am sorry they are, the buildings look like large blocks, the character models look wooden and stiff, the animations look really awful. And to be honest this is the first game I have seen in which the cutscenes look worse than the actual game that is just a shame. In the end I must say Spider-man 3 had so much potential and could have been another great movie game like like Spider-man 2 and it could have proven that movie based games can be actually be really good but it is clear that lack of effort was put into making this game as the game clearly seems rushed and considering this was made for a multiple number of consoles that is no surprise. I really wanted to like this game but it is so half a**ed, toned down and unfinished that it is hard for even a huge fan of Spider-man like myself to like it. Sad to say that this game is an insult to the name of Spider-man. 4/10
This game is just straight up boring (besides the web swinging). The story is awful, boss fights are an absolute joke, and the side missions are a waste of time.
