A brilliant fighting game for newcomers, and a wonderful one for genre fans, that somehow still manages to feel like a disappointment for so comprehensively failing to bring its two demographics together. [Apr 2018, p.112]

Dragon Ball FighterZ feels like playing a Dragon Ball game built by the anime's biggest fan. For me, Dragon Ball FighterZ is the best tag-based fighting game since Marvel vs. Capcom 2. I can't think of higher praise. [Essential]

Dragon Ball FighterZ is an accomplished fighting game with a clear appreciation for its source material, providing frenetic action between larger-than-life characters ripped straight from the anime/manga series. Though its combo system may be simple on the surface, with many of its moves being universal across its characters, there's a great deal of complexity when it comes to successfully breaking out of a combo string, with timing being the key to victory.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a class act of a fighter and I'm looking forward to more additions to the game from Arc System Works. (Videl, Broly, Master Roshi, and Mr. Satan are begging to be added to the roster as are alternate costumes for existing fighters.) What's here is a complete package, with a fighting game that's fun for fans, but still has depth for masters.

Whether or not you like fighting games or Dragon Ball, extremely dramatic villains and hench dudes with giant hair hurling fireballs at each other (all set to unceasing guitar solos) is kind of inherently enjoyable.

This is why we play games in the first place. There have been decent DB games before this, but nothing close to FighterZ. The animation, combined with artistic graphics really set it apart from other games and it also beautifully complements the gameplay. It's so brisk, and is one of the greatest technical achievements in the genre and can't be avoided Full Review »

If you are a casual video game player, you will enjoy it. If you LOVE Dragonball like I do, you will enjoy this game... for about 5 hours. Then you will HATE IT.

    FAN SERVICE: 8.5/10
    Story: 7.5/10
    Story Gameplay: 6/10
Player Hub: 3/10 (You can't match with friends, see opponents Win/Loss ratio, and overall shallow player hub with only cosmetics.)

ONLINE GAMEPLAY: Absolutely horrid. I will say there was very little lag though, but my god that will not matter. With the "Newcomer Friendly" gameplay, it makes it almost impossible to play. You're opponent will spam the same moves.... over.... over... and over.... Sure if you "get good" you will learn to block certain attacks. However, combating designed game flaws does not equal enjoyment. Maybe if health bars were increased, and space was expanded it would be ok.

However, you have two imaginary walls on each side that your opponent will use to their advantage. There is a reason this particular style of gameplay has gone mostly to the wayside. You will consistently run into people who spam consecutive 64 hit combos with stacked ultimates or they use the borders to pop you up in the air while switching characters. It is truly infuriating. Sure I could spam the same defensive move to counter it over and over again, but WHERE IS THE FUN IN THAT????

Its an absolute spam fest, which is truly a shame since there is so many cool animations and cool fan service in this game. You may have watched the trailers, you may have watched the developers play the game, but that will not be your experience.

Rarely you are matched with a similar player who wants to enjoy the game for what it is, and those can be some really fun match-ups. You will also be paired with weaker opponents which can be fun so that you can do whatever you want... but thats 1/4. There is no real "skill" to this game.

The pacing of the fight takes away from all that could be great for this game. You will play this game for 2 days, and then you will never play it again. So, if you have $60 burning a hole in your pocket, and you want to drop the Zeni to get yourself immersed in Dragonball... Then go ahead. If you are a casual gamer who doesn't care about DragonBall, do not get this game!

After you get over the voice-overs and different color uniforms... it will wear thin. If you want Dragonball nostalgia with a TON of fan service, please go play Dragonball Xenoverse II,

I can not say anything that has not already been said. Wonderful. The best game of Dragon Ball, without a doubt.
