    Screaming creatures, cities on fire, underground stations that warp and shudder like an intestine, and a humanoid pig giving an antelope a high-five as they tag team a CRT television. What’s not to love?

    While the story of what happens to the main characters is unfulfilling, the descent into the hellish world of Here They Lie is, on its own, worth taking. Its dreary, evocative environments, dark tone, and horrific imagery would stand out even outside the realm of VR games. Some of its places, acts, and monsters will stick with me for a while. It creates a strong sense of place, and while I wouldn't say VR is crucial to experience, it definitely amplifies it.

    Here They Lie is a clever game for the PlayStation VR and its motion sickness does make wonder whether this game would be better suited for the PS4 Pro for faster framerates. The game’s momentum starts slow and every now and then the game will really make you jump which is where the developers have succeeded. However in terms of gameplay, it is a little light in its nature but the nonetheless is an interesting look into both the horror genre and into the psyche of the main character in this horror thriller.

    With Here They Lie, I stared long and hard into the abyss, only this time it didn’t stir; instead, I was left gazing at an under-cooked horror experience that while surreal, fails to deliver a fulfilling end product. Horror games should present an exercise in nerve-shredding tension whether they’re built for virtual reality or not. Sadly, Here They Lie leans too heavily on VR as a novelty to justify a by-the-numbers entry into the genre.

    It offers everything we look forward and everything that we fear about virtual reality. It's a charismatic game, but certainly confusing and opaque.

    Here They Lie smacks of cynicism – a game designed with the knowledge that horror works really well in VR, without anybody involved knowing how VR games should operate. It’s distinctly unpleasant to play, and I fear it’ll be only one of many horror games that pull the same stunt as virtual reality continues to hold sway.

    While the graphics are low rez in VR this kinda lends itself to the atmosphere in a weird kind of way.. meaning that you can't quite make outWhile the graphics are low rez in VR this kinda lends itself to the atmosphere in a weird kind of way.. meaning that you can't quite make out what that 'thing' is moving in the distance and that makes you feel more uncomfortable.

    The game drips atmosphere from the get go, the greyscale pallet topped with occasional blossoms of colour works really well in VR. The sound engineers must be proud of themselves, hearing the flapping of cloth over your shoulder and not knowing if it's a creature is just as terrifying as seeing the creatures in front of you.

    The levels range from terrifying to weird to outright surreal madness.

    I personally never had any VR sickness with HTL but I understand it's different for everyone, I can't handle EVE for example but plenty of people are fine with that.
    I think it may be to do with turning your head as you move forward, to combat this just stop and look around, you'll find any discomfort is lessened.
    And don't use the run button until you're comfortable moving around in this world.    … Expand

I felt like the graphics were well done at the time and had a great atmosphere. I remember thinking that it went on just a bit too long and could have been tightened up a bit but that isn't the worst problem to have.… Expand

It's an impressive early VR horror game that gives players a unique, apocalyptic world to explore. I really loved the level design and how the game keeps pushing you forward and the pace moves at a brisk pace despite not telling you where to go. I especially loved the narrow and twisty passageways that would snake throughout the world. And how you can look up and feel how closed in you are by seeing the buildings towering above you on both sides. I didn't really have any issues with the enemies. And thought they were a good addition to the game. They presented a subtle fear of getting caught and creepiness without getting really annoying. The only major issue I had was the nausea the game gives you when moving around. This really hurts the game because its hard to explore the game as much as you might want to and also hurts the enjoyment of the game.… Expand

    Meh. Way too little character development, so couldn't care less for any of the characters, but good aesthetics and atmosphere. Decent VR title.

    I don't usually get sick while playing VR games but this.. it's so blurry and I feel like throwing up every 3 minutes.
