Sadly it's an disappointment and I will be making comparison to DS since it's the same people who made Callisto and called it "a spiritual successor". While sounds design, music, atmosphere, attention to detail in characters, enemies and environment were really stellar; the story, characters and most of the gameplay fall flat. Biggest fault is that not once were I scared throughout the whole experience, no psychological terror working inside your head like original Dead Space did so great (I consider Dead Space the greatest horror game imo, no other game scared me more. Not Sillent Hill, not Resident Evil or Eternal Darkness).

The melee mechanics, while interesting at first, are broken and you can go through the entire game dodging everyone. The UI for the guns are frustrating; in DS, just press the D-pad for that weapon you want; here, press and scroll and while in combat, it never seems to work correctly there.

Why can't I pick up health, ammo and other loot with my GRP? You could do that in DS all the way back in 2008, so stupid you couldn't here.
The story, I see the potential but it felt they never took advantage of the setup they had and the ending wasn't fulfilling. I did manage to 100% complete it fairly easy. Just look up a collectible and special moves guide, boot it up on hardest difficulty and you're good to go. The length of it was fine, expected it to be roughly 10-15 hours long and it was. If they make a sequel they should go the "Aliens" route with they story. Have Dani come back with a military force to adress the situation at Black Iron with really likeable marines. I see the potential there and it would be great. I was more excited over this than God of War: Ragnarök because I knew GoW would be great.
5/10. Fairly disappointing but it fills a few checkmarks. It's far from the worst horror experience I've had. But not enough the be scary

Great horror game. Think it will be a classic after sometime.

Pros: Fun combat Amazing visuals/ interesting level design Good story Great Gore Cons: Settings need more options for brightness calibration, headset options. It was definitely not short but I wish it was longer. Wish there was a harder difficulty. Maximum is hard don’t get me wrong but an insane difficulty would be fun.

The end result is an insult to people like me that enjoyed Dead Space for story, gameplay and voice-acting. An insult to advertise it as "brought to you by Dead Space creator" that was kind of a promise, right?

It's very atmospheric dead-space-like game (feels like dead space 3 most of all), sci-fi horror (which are rarely for a last years), with great sound design and level design. It optimised well on PS4 (looks not so good as on other platforms, but, without other options - it's good enough). I set 8 of 10 because of final boss fight - it is awful.

After checking out all 3 games, I immediately felt concerned. Now I understand why people were extremely hyped for this game (after all, this is a new IP from the OG creators of Dead Space) but that's the problem, it felt TOO SIMILAR to Dead Space and that's a huge NO-NO for a new IP. But I still decided to pick it up and though my expectations weren't very high, I was still disappointed. I want to start off by saying I was glad Sony assisted in development of the game with letting them use their mo-cap studios and got Sam Witwer involved after seeing his great performance of Deacon Saint John from Days Gone. Because of this, the game looks amazing probably some of the best in the business, the soundscape is impeccable just like the Dead Space games, and the performances from Sam and the main protagonist are great. But that's honestly all the positives here, the rest isn't even sub-par, they're downright HORRIBLE. Like how it's 5-6 hours long meaning the developers lied about it being 12-14 (and at the time of this review, there's no New Game+), too many jumpscares here (side note: I might sound like a coward for putting this here but the reason most horror games don't have a lot is because it can make you nervous for one to come and when there is one, it gets you and makes you want to prepare for it, but because of how infrequent they can be, you'll be relieved only for it to get you again), it was almost like the developers were afraid that you would get bored if they weren't enough but that's exactly what happened when there were too many, the fact it's EXTREMELY LINEAR (and yes, Dead Space 1 and 2 were linear as well, but they took advantage of that with some areas being big to explore to collect artifacts, puzzles to solve on the side if you get bored of the main story, and nice vistas to look at that are memorable) but here, it has absolutely no puzzles and it's just one long corridor to the end, the story was TOO SIMILAR to Dead Space, uninteresting side characters, the bugs and glitchs and how it crashed CONSTANTLY on my PS4 Pro, but easily the worst part about this game is the fact that you don't think AT ALL when you're fighting enemies. Basically this game has very few enemy variety and even then they aren't unique since they all attack in the exact same way so it doesn't matter if you're fighting a typical zombie, blind, brute, or even a mini-boss, they all go down the exact same way and you have to fight these enemies A LOT and this wouldn't be the problem if it wasn't for the HORRIFIC combat. Basically you move the left analog stick in whatever direction since it doesn't matter where they swipe because as long as you hold the left analog stick left or right, you will automatically dodge, then you do this for a few times and then you hit them, sometimes a reticule appears and if you shoot it, you'll do extra damage, rinse and repeat until the end. Now this might sound like engaging combat, until you realize this combat system was designed with only one enemy in mind so when there are multiple enemies at once and if a random enemy hits you while you're hitting someone else, the camera LOCKS onto that other enemy for no reason, the camera goes wild and gets stuck if your back is facing a wall meaning the level designers and combat designers never talked to each other at all, and if you hit while you're in a dodge animation, you're straight up stuck. At least with The Last of Us Part 1 and 2 for the supposed "failure" that it is, their combat systems are way better since your weapons could break at any given moment and they took advantage of the enemy variety since some enemies could insta kill you if you weren't careful. Or even the Dead Space games since sure you were stiff as well, but not as stiff as this game since the combat was also dynamic since you could use the environment, stasis, and kinesis to defeat the enemies and at least it made sense you were stiff since the games released on the PS3 and XBOX 360 and your main character was a typical engineer in a tight suit. Now there's a chance Glen Schofield and everyone else at Striking Distance Studios will turn this IP into a franchise we'll all love, but considering this is what the team has supposedly been working on for years, it's safe to say they already of a sequel or DLC ready, and I'm really not looking forward to it since even if they fix the bugs and performance, it doesn't fix the linearity, bad characters, excessive jump-scares, and abysmal combat. So unless whatever's next truly special, I do not recommend The Callisto Protocol. Expand

Not to mention, the game feels uninspired, isn't scary in the least, and is full of Uncharted-esque moments that are incredibly dated. The game sucks.

Launch of the game wasn't a perfect one. First time putting the cd in I was greeted with a 20GB patch, how nice. Despite a big patch, the game still felt unpolished and not optimised, although I was running the game on a PS4 PRO... I can only imagine how terrible it's running on PS4 original or Slim. By the time I was done with the game, I was greeted again with another 14GB patch. They finally managed to fix trophy bug that wouldn't sync my progression to PSN... which I never experienced before and never thought that trophies could be a challenge to implement.

The game starts interesting and promising. You're introduced to beautiful visuals, in a futuristic looking city in distant Europa, in the middle of something that looks like a terrorist attack. All this interesting setting... you won't get to explore... it will be used for sequel bait, ain't that nice?

If you're a fan of dark visuals, where you can't see anything, well you can to the right place. And if you demanded more unclearer visuals, be not afraid, they're adding foggy/misty environment and terrible weather effects, to spice up your fetish.

Those locations... How many more sewer levels must we suffer though before developers understand that they're not fun, just stop... please, I'm willing to pay more just so you don't force on me this literally crappy levels. So, back to tortures, you're forced from point A to point B with some "conveniently" placed crazy routes to go through that don't make any sense. Along the way from point A to B, they do everything in their power to make that journey more tedious. You fall through floors, something falls from above and blocks your way, then there is obligatory "missing fuze battery riddle" every half hour. An those vents... just why... this supposed to be a prison... keeping people from escaping... but those vents are everywhere and they made in perfect size for anyone to escape.

Game mechanics. So the new fighting mechanic is not something I've seen before, it's something refreshing... I like the way it feels like a real close combat... so here comes a big "BUT"... Enemies are unbalanced, the game throws at you bunch of enemies, but camera movement is way too slow to deal with more than two enemies at a time. Same goes for characters movement and reaction time. Even on easy mode the game will be difficult and frustrating. For example there is a mini-boss which could have been killed easily if not for the terrible gun selection mechanism. It's a close combat... the game is supposed to be a survival horror... but here we are supposed to deal with a boss like a bullet sponge with limited ammo and shifting from one weapon to another.

And if you're like... "well duuh, just get more ammo for one specific weapon, not a biggie, i is smart, you is dumb". Well, captain genius, let me introduce you the next segment: those terrible checkpoints. They are all over the place, sometimes you can end up wasting time on buying the same stuff again and again because the game is not smart to save at the buy point... and the other time, without a warning the game throws at you a boss battle... while you are one low health and almost no ammo. And the best part is... there is no way to go back... no level selection. Just awesome...

And while we're on the checkpoints and dying... those loading times... just terrible. If you're stuck at a checkpoint, you'll be spending more time looking at the loading screen, not playing the actual game.

Story could be great but it ended up being boring. They slightly touched the virus origin and by the time they explained the intentions the game ruffly ends. The part with protagonists schizophrenia had some moments, that they could have expanded upon, instead of throwing at us same monotonous prison/abandoned hangars/ sewer levels. But don't worry, the quality stuff is coming, everything is promised for the next chapter, well then... until then, 5/10 is all they get.

I actually really enjoyed the brawling combat system and found it extremely satisfying, using different crunching combo's to beat the various monsters into bloody pulp. My favourite tactic is to use my 'GRP' glove to pull enemies towards me and hit them with my stun baton. You may find it hard if you just engage in thoughtless button bashing but if you use your brain along with all your capabilities and the environmental hazards, then you will find it pretty easy, even on the maximum security setting!

Story is fine and does the job without going in too much depth and I don't have a problem with the game length either, a game plus option however, would have been nice or an option of playing from another characters perspective, like in the Resident Evil 2 remake.

Overall, I really like this game and hope that the developers build on this with a sequel.

However, the combat plays completely differently, and once you get it down is perhaps even more satisfying than those. The Callisto Protocol is a game from the Dark Souls era, and is purposely very punishing at some points. On PS4, the load times are bad, about 55-60 seconds to reload after a death. It's a beautiful looking game, even on the PS4, and I encountered only a few glaring performance issues (2-3 full crashes though) across 12ish hours. Long story short: if your expectations are anchored to Dead Space, you may or may not enjoy this. I was drawn to this because DS1 is among my favorites of all-time, but I played nearly all of TCP through in one snowy day because it was a ton of fun as its own thing. The story and world are also super intriguing, and I'm intrigued by the possibility of strong DLC next year. My guess is that in a couple years, the sequel breaks through commercially (and perhaps especially critically) similarly to Assassin's Creed II building on the first AC. Expand

My only nit-pick is that I would have liked it to be a few hours longer. 10/10

(I hope Schofield reads it here)

    1. Whoever thought disassembling a weapon and reassembling it every time you switch weapons needs to be fired. 2. Whoever thought that it is okay to not automatically reload an empty weapon needs to be banned from the gaming industry. 3. Whoever thought fighting the same mini-boss 3 different times is fun needs to be kicked in the gonads. 4.

    5. Whoever thought removing Dani the first half of the game instead of her being in Elias' position from the beginning needs to go back to writing school.

    6. Whoever thought this was going to be a great melee combat system in a post-Ghost of Tsushima world need to be b*tch slapped.

I hope EA buys you out a second time just to stop you people from making games.
