Ghost Recon Breakpoint is a game crying out to be more straightforward, more-focused, but instead it’s added one more wafer thin gameplay mechanic after another, flying in the face of common sense, and now its bloated frame has exploded because it simply can not hold all that mess in and still function. A dull, frustrating misfire.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint is coincidentally living up to its name, being a failure and potential gravedigger for the famous franchise. Riddled with Pay-to-Win microtransactions tacked on looter shooter gameplay and pretty under average storytelling, even Jon Berenthal wasn’t enough to arise this gameplay up to some decent playable heights.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is a bland, boring experience that brings nothing new to the table and goes as far as to make the franchise stray further away from what made it unique years ago, a ghost of its former self.

One of the worst open worlds Ubisoft has released. Even if its issues have been patched by the time you read this, this is one seriously uninspired sandbox. [Issue#168, p.88]

Ghost Recon Breakpoint may have solid shooting and co-op play foundations, but it can't make up for the aggressive microstransactions, infuriating technical issues and mission structures so repetitive they soon become tedious to complete. After attempting to cherry pick popular features from other games, Breakpoint ends up feeling like a chaotic yet bland mess that really isn't worthy of your time.

It would make sense if the addition of loot were in service of guiding people to spend real money on better guns, but even then the stats are so meaningless it would take a lot of convincing. There's some surprising fun to be had stealthily infiltrating enemy compounds and playing with friends, but Breakpoint is still a generic and distinctly sub-par game. It's essentially every Ubisoft open-world game rolled into one, failing to excel in any one area or establish its own identity. Breakpoint is a messy, confused game and a ghost of the series' former self.

There’s nothing wrong with a game making you work hard before it yields rewards, but Ghost Recon Breakpoint takes that principle so far that, in its early stages at least, playing it is a chore. The latest iteration of Ubisoft’s future-soldier open-world shooter has plenty of good points, but those are marred by basic elements that so broken that the game feels like a backward step from Ghost Recon: Wildlands (2017).

Ghost Recon Breakpoint should be the breaking point for Ubisoft's open world design by committee. There's an entertaining experience buried somewhere under the bloat and I had some fun at times in the game – I love infiltrating bases, but everything surrounding that is a pain. Maybe, just maybe, not every game needs to be open world? Maybe not every game needs a gear score? Sometimes simplicity is key.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint is a messy game that half-heartedly tries to do too many things, resulting in a game that lacks a firm identity as to what it wants to be.

In stark comparison to previous Ghost Recon iteration Wildlands, Breakpoint feels as though it has no real sense of what it’s supposed to be or what players want from it.

In the end, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint is just a mess. Between its technical issues, repetitive gameplay, subpar gear system, and sinister microtransactions; this is probably the worst open-world live service game so far. Hopefully, its technical issues will be patched soon but the base game will still remain one of the most soulless experiences that I've played this console generation.

Breakpoint’s fixed nature is at direct odds with its open-world design, and ultimately results in a game that less about realism than it is about imposing limits.

As a longtime fan of the series and as someone that honestly tried to give this a shot, I'm sorry to say that Breakpoint is a failure. I suppose the game can only get better from here, but it is not currently in a shape to even be considered finished.

I really wanted to like Breakpoint. Ubisoft has a habit of making mediocre games – Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs – really shine with a sequel, but this is a significant step back. I would rather play Anthem – at least traversal doesn’t make me want to put my head through a window in that game.

A smudge of systems from other Ubisoft games fail to coalesce - and sometimes are plain crippled - in this weak open world shooter. [Eurogamer Avoid]

The player character customization is also a lot more detailed than its Division cousin, which of course sets up an opportunity to throw even more microtransactions at the player.

I don't like this game. I played it. Within the first ten minutes, I was f.. bored of it... I hated every moment I spent playing this game...I think I had less fun playing this than I did Anthem, and I had less than no fun playing Anthem.

Every aspect of this game is built around garbage micro transactions. Why hunt for epic weapons/gear/mods/weapon skins/weapon attachments/vehicles/clothing/emotes/skill points/in-game currency/xp boosts when you can pay REAL MONEY for it?! Absolutely garbage of a game. I’m done with Ubisoft. I weep for the future of gaming. Full Review »

First, the quality team absolutely failed here, as there are so many bugs, spelling mistakes, and stupid things that happen left and right. Either the quality control team failed, or management decided to rush this game to launch. The bugs are overwhelming, and simply indicates that this game was rushed to launch for some unknown reason. You will see a LOT of people complain about the microtransactions, etc., but unfortunately that is common in a lot of games. I'd actually support microtransactions if the game was solid, but will not spend a penny here. Lastly, you will also see a LOT of comments about how the AI is just terrible. You can literally sit from 200 meters away and kill one enemy at a time without any risk at all; it is just too easy, and the AI is just stupid. There are countless other examples, such as when the AI will bunch up at the base of a tower, and not advance in any intelligent way whatsoever. You'll quickly find this super boring and a waste of money after an hour or two. Lastly, the whole marketing campaign of being "hunted" and "behind enemy lines" is not true. The open world feels very empty and Ubisoft missed a golden opportunity to have "hunters" or "wolves" roaming the open world and engaging with you. Not here though. They also insinuate that the "wolves" are the elite soldiers, but they are quite weak, and quite underwhelming. If you feel very compelled to buy this game, I would strongly suggest that you wait at LEAST six months and try to buy the game on sale. We, as gamers, simply cannot support developers and publishers that launch a game in such a BAD state. Do not buy. Full Review »

It was developed only to suck you dry of money. This nonsense need to stop. Stop encouraging developers with these micro transactions. Don't buy this piece of crap. And for all the losers that say don't buy them if you don't want them. That's the problem. They are implicated in a way that you have to grind a stupid amount of time to kill the end game tanks. And if we are going to let this happen soon we will pay 400 dollars for a game. Full Review »
