This XIII Remake was supposed to allow fans of the original to relive their memories in a way that was suited to modern hardware and gameplay norms. Sadly, this game failed to deliver due to a questionable choice of art-direction, last gen controls and many, many flaws and bugs that hamper the game.
XIII Remake could well be called a demake as this new version feels a step back from the original game. Littered with bugs, the game is rendered almost unplayable, and we still don't get how it could be released in this state.
XIII is a disastrous remake that probably never should have been made. The franchise's cult classic status officially has a major blemish in this remake. It's almost impossible to find anything positive to say about it because every aspect is just so broken and bland. If you want to get into the franchise, read the graphic novel but do yourself a favor and avoid this remake at all costs.
I played this game after handful of patches (August 2023) and if was not that bad, I was expecting a lot worse. Sure, on PS4 it still had fps drops (in one place it got as low as 5-6 fps) and tearing, but it was still fun. It could use some more tuning and optimisation, but overall worth playing, but only on huge discount.
Good game. Still have some minor issues, but it's a really fun game to play (thanks to the patches). I was a big fan of the 2003 version, and this one does not disapointed. Still, do not pay the full price, but for 20-30$ max, it's really enjoyable. It will bug if you use the crossbow (and stay in the scope).
I never played the original but surely it has to be better than this. The game is terribly optimised and suffers greatly from performance issues. It also stutters and chugs along somewhere between 10fps or below whenever there is more than one character on screen and the amount of screen tearing in this game is absolutely staggering. Character Models/A.I will often be contorted and doing something that they're not meant to be doing. For example, there were many a-time where I'd be in a gunfight with a few enemies for them to only to disperse and run off into a corner and just stand there. Level Design is quite awful as there were a few occasions where I'd wonder around a small area for about 10 minutes with no idea where to go, only for a YouTube gameplay being able to assist me as the Game's Navigator decides whenever it wants shows up. There is very little care or effort put into this title which is quite apparent especially when there is so much clipping issues that often requires a few restarts before key objects correctly appear and there's even grammatical errors in the trophy description. I would also remap some controls (nothing fancy, just changing buttons inputs from "hold" to "press") however, despite these settings getting saved, the game would just decide when it was going to obey them.
The only merits I can give this game is that the checkpoint restarts are instantaneous, Adam West VO being included and the story is interesting.
It's such a shame because I was really looking forward to trying the remake of the original XIII as I never got around to it when I was younger. However, despite a 25GB patch later, this game is riddled with bugs that really takes any enjoyment out of it and because the game is quite lengthy, it's a real headache to complete. I wish this game gets the remake treatment it deserves in a few years under a competent developer.
Super disappointing. The dev's clearly didn't try on this. As of right now (12-03-2020) they are on patch version 1.03 and there are still visual glitches galore, nearly unending screen tearing, audio glitches and thats just the tip of the iceberg. Wait until they fix it (hopefully) or you get it for free. I gave it a 3 for the nostalgia factor.
