A black flow cuts through stone and threatens to spill once more across the world. The ancient tetraform calls, and with it come unearthly powers. Catapult yourself through the air, use the power drawn from fallen creatures to slow time, and cut through the swarms of dark beings with a razor-edge boomerang. Travel through once bustling locales, sacrificed to hide a myth, and descend the Godpath into the lost realms below. Cleanse these halls and ensure that whatever lies beneath doesn’t come back.

Boomerang X is a diamond of a 3D action game. While it might not offer beautiful cutscenes or clever dialogue, the action itself constantly manages to amaze. The stellar boomerang mechanics are in perfect harmony with the super fast action. For fans of the genre, Boomerang X is an absolute joy from start to finish.

Boomerang X is a textbook example of short and sweet. It’s a bite-sized experience that rewards persistence with a vague, mysterious narrative, dynamic combat, challenging enemies, and so much satisfaction when you squeeze out a victory in the last wave. I had to test my mettle and tolerate a bit of slowdown, but Boomerang X is one of the best indies I've played this year.

Dripping with style and absolutely stuffed with incredible combat, Boomerang X offers a rewarding blast of action with every moment of gameplay. It somewhat lacks replayability, but what's already there is staggeringly well executed. Boomerang X is one of the best action games of the year.

Boomerang X features instantly gratifying gameplay that will get its hooks into you immediately. Its arena-based combat encourages you to keep moving and flying through the air in order to avoid death, with your boomerang acting as a kind of portable teleport or hook shot. The overall difficulty is a bit tame for the most part, which incidentally means the game is a bit on the short side, but there’s plenty of potential for repeat playthroughs and speed runs thanks to the fun, addictive gameplay. If you’re a fan of frantic, fast-paced first-person action, then this one will be right up your alley.

Boomerang X may not be perfect, but it’s perfectly addictive, a game just begging to be replayed. There’s even a built-in speed run timer setting and harder difficulty options and a New Game+ mode underscoring its replayability. Running through its 13 levels another time probably won’t peel back any more of the game’s very thin plot layers, but damn if it isn’t a blast to zip around like an airborne assassin.

With Boomerang X, the DANG studio goes straight to the point and brilliantly exploits a lively and enjoyable gameplay, which allows the most beautiful bloody choreographies.

Boomerang X is incredibly fun and we loved it from the start. The combat system is very unique and it never bores the player.

Quickly acquiring the said boomerang, which I prefer to imagine as the legendary Glaive from the movie Krull (yes, it has one less prong and looks different, but this is my Colwyn fantasy!) you’ll very consistently be given some new move or technique and then a series of trials that will push you to show mastery of that new skill. Once you’re rolling you’ll be dashing, floating in slow-mo, and picking off enemies who get increasingly challenging like a pro… though each new and tougher variant you may need to puzzle over before understanding how to take them out. Perhaps the rough handful of hours you get is appropriate, as it keeps the title from overstaying its welcome, but I still would love to see a few more levels of craziness to really push my skills tacked onto the end just to give the solid design its full and fitting due. If you’re a fan of accurate shooting while on the fly and some quick-moving traversal this should satisfy you pretty much completely.

Considering this is one of Devolver’s more expensive titles on the console, there’s surprisingly little content on offer here if you don’t fancy replaying it, but the developers should still be applauded for the unique gameplay mechanics, gorgeous visuals, and manic soundtrack. If the game still seems appealing to you, I’d recommend holding out for the inevitable sale before taking the plunge."

That dynamic allows you to stayA first-person action game based on an original movement scheme: your weapon doubles as a teleporting device. That dynamic allows you to stay in the air indefinitely, and to move at blazing speed around a series of fighting arenas.

    CONS:

A ONE-TRICK PONY: The whole game is all about the movement idea. While that idea is good, it's not always great: movement often feels a bit random, because your boomerang is too fast for precise control.

SOME STAGES JUST AREN'T FUN: The last few fights draw out for a long time. The game only saves after you've finished a fight–so those long stretches of fighting result in annoying artificial difficulty.

BAD SUPPORT: I could barely play the game because of a very frustrating bug in the gyro controls. The problem has since been fixed, but it took months for the team to address it. I tried to give this game a fair rating, but the truth is that those technical problems destroyed the fun for me.

    PROS:

MOSTLY FUN: At its best, Boomerang X is a fun game. Zipping around the arena without ever touching the ground is nice for a while, even if I personally didn't find that mechanic as compelling as other reviewers.

UNIQUE STYLE: Boomerang X is a short, stylish game. Its graphics might not be for everyone, but they're instantly recognizable. If you're into short and unique indies, this one might be right up your alley.

GREAT FINAL BOSS: After the infuriating level that precedes it, the final boss rekindled my faith in the game. It's not drawn out, and it makes great use of the best aspects of Boomerang X, while doing away with the boring protracted fights.
