Golf Story is a smashing success and does so much more than it needs to. While the game would have been well received simply for its golfing aspect, Sidebar Games has built a great narrative and world around it.

Golf Story is well worth the addition to every Switch owner's library. Its zany cast, easy-to-grasp gameplay, and wonderful art design make for an incredibly rewarding experience.

Fun, diversified, generous and also technical, Golf Story synthesizes two great gameplay types to deliver a love story between golf and classic RPGs. With great dialogue and a hardy direction, the game offers a decent amount of courses, even though it may lack some real challenge in the end.

I was already hooked by the idea of a golfing game with an overworld, side quests, stats, and leveling, but it wound up being so much more than that. The fact it's not trying to be a sim makes it so approachable, and I have no problem suggesting this to people who don't even like golf. Technical issues notwithstanding, Golf Story is an unexpected and excellent addition to the Switch's eShop lineup.

A golf game with an interesting story and some good variations that keep changing the classic formula.

There's plenty to like here - the script almost justifies a playthrough by itself - but it's a little overlong, a little padded out, it's obvious charms soon obscured by busywork, reputation and irritation. [Christmas 2017, p.122]

However, when people started telling me it was an RPG, I started paying more attention to it. Watching the game's first 30 minutes was all I needed to decide to buy it, and after playing it myself I was hooked! This has got to be one of the funniest, goofiest, most enjoyable and charming games I've played in a while. The game has a lot to offer under its colorful graphics and it's much more than meets the eye. It's relaxing, unexpected and fun! Expand

That, mixed with the amazing RPG elements it offers, have me hooked to it. It has an amazing atmosphere, great music, and an impressive story and cast as well. A definite must-own for switch users. Really fantastic game! It's easy to learn but pretty hard to master. The story is really nice and engaging. It's a 9/10 from me.

The script is hilarious and full of critics to the elitism that sorround golf and some reference to Tiger Woods's scandal.

The game is not skill demanding and the durability is around 20 hours, its main function is entertaint, doing so with elegance and rhythm.

One of the best quality, apart from its beutiful graphic, is its music, which accompanies all the moments and stages wonderfully.

If I need to spotlight one defect should be the imposibility to restart a challenge whenever you want, this little issue is really annoying but nothing that impoverish the experience.

It’s especially impressive given that it was developed by such a small team. The levels are extremely varied, and that helps keep things interesting, although it was a bit too long (it took me 16 hours, and it could have been more like 10-12 given that the basic golf gameplay doesn’t change much).

I took two points off. The first was because it’s difficult to judge the slope of the land you’re on when putting; just having an arrow labeled ‘slope’ isn’t detailed enough to give you a sense of how great the slope is. The second was because the game was too easy, in my opinion. I felt like I was able to beat almost everything on my first attempt, until I made it to the last level—and even then, it was only two tries.

Still, a good game, and an easy recommendation.

At the beginning of the story there seems to be characters, and gameplay elements that would be developed later in the game, and whil each level does bring something new to the table there is a distinct feeling that the developer bit off more than they could handle and that the final product is alot less than what could have been. This is also apparent in the narrative, which although funny, seems to have been cut back due to a lack of time or resources. The result is a game that, while fun, feels a little short, and occasionally repetitive. Expand

    NOT READY FOR SALE! WARNING!

This is a great idea that simply isn't ready for sale, and thus becomes a frustrating disgrace, only play this game for educational purposes to get ideas about what an rpg could be, not for fun because many frustrations are ahead

-SAVING and quitting DOES NOT SAVE YOUR GAME! for some reason saving is only triggered by entering a new area, you could do all the quests for an area, "save" and quit, an loose it all

-The game froze because I used a frisbee, and this is a pixel art game! [in 2021]

-many other people are having game breaking crashes

-I was in the middle of a long course, I pressed pause to do something, saw there was a world map button, I excitedly pressed it only to be instantly teleported to my house without warning, having to walk all the way back to that Course and that guy to start the quest over again

Sometimes you don’t even know if something is a quest or not!
-a guy tending to the grass hints that he needs it cut, if you swing near a bunch of grass it gets cut, so logically you think you need to cut the bunches of grass near him, but you can’t! And that process is super frustrating

-You are told to go get a special item, I already had it and didn’t know it because it was called something different, and the quest giver did not acknowledge it

    -Your skills are never explained

-Camera doesn’t let you see where you are trying to aim for a lot of the time! In a Golf Game! So frustrating

-Aiming shot and switching clubs are on the same joystick, meaning you **** up all the time, terrible decision

-There is a race where you need to run, I had no clue you could run
