This is a pretty good strategy game, and it gives you enough options for you to play around with - that said, using snipers is probably the most fun because you can pull off some cool rebound shots. The core gameplay is solid, but it's all you'll be doing so it does get a bit samey. If you keep switching up the characters you use, it could stop the game from getting stale but I personally found what worked for me and kept using it. The story in Heist is pretty weak, so as the game is around 15 hours long I was losing interest towards the end. Going for 3 stars on every level, especially on a harder difficulty, makes the game a bit repetitive but most levels are procedurally generated so the levels change every time you play them. Levels being procedurally generated might make the enemy placements you're given vary in difficulty a bit so maybe they should've gone with a set level design here instead. On a more positive note, there's some fairly good music in this game and there's enough visual variety to be found as backdrops change as you get further into deep space. The DLC is included in the Switch version and brings a new character, Fen, and new levels to the table. Fen helps connect this game to Steamworld Dig 2, and there are nods to the first game too which are nice to see.

Overall, Steamworld Heist: Ultimate Edition is a decent offering, especially for the sale price of just a few quid. There's quite a bit of content here, it's just a shame that I found myself getting a little bored of it towards the end.

Ok game, but feels a bit repetitive after a while. You're doing the same things over and over with no big change and nothing to discover, and in comparison, I enjoyed more Mario and rabbids kingdom (unfair comparison), which at least has a fun theme and 2D tactical move.

Amazing game! Simple, addictive, interesting, hard (but fair), with good humor and nice graphics.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a great, solid turn-based RPG by Image & Form, a developer who has consistently produced incredible games. After playing this fourth installment in the SteamWorld series, I walked away feeling satisfied, though I also felt myself expecting more from the quality of the previous three games. Admittedly, this is a greatly different genre of game; however, that is also what Image & Form has always impressed me with: no matter what, a great experience of a game while still keeping true to its style. I enjoyed the game, but also found it to have ups and downs. The story was okay. In retrospect, the story seems to be more about providing exposition for the long haul, as its not until the last couple chapters where the story reeled me in. In all fairness, the gameplay is what I was focused on, so i wasn't really counting on much of a storyline anyways. After all, gameplay was king for the other SteamWorld games. And while battles are fun, I felt like the middle of the game started to become monotonous with not as much enemy variety as I would have liked. The beginning chapters are strong, acquainting the player with all the fun tools you can use in battle. Notably, the last few battles of the game felt unbalanced when it comes to difficulty. The second to last battle was exciting and challenging, whereas the very last battle was surprisingly easy yet long and drawn out. They could have done a better job in balancing the difficulty curve. The music was solid, but again, not as memorable and present as it was in the other SteamWorld games. And the artwork is also fun and on point with the rest of the series.
Overall, I enjoyed the game but probably set my expectations too high, given that the SteamWorld series has always ranked so consistently high for me otherwise. Nevertheless, a fun RPG.

A very fun system. It ended getting a bit repetitive for me and the story wasnt enough to keep me engaged, but it doesnt take away from the great turn based system that is present here.

If you missed it the first time around, the Switch is a great place to play this truly fantastic game. [Issue #32 – March/April 2018, p. 20]

Steamworld Heist maintains the wit, charm, and humour found in the mainline 'Dig' series, swapping spades and shovels for some satisfyingly addictive turn-based action that both newcomers and veterans will enjoy.

SteamWorld Heist is a phenomenal addition to the Switch library. Its story might not be the most gripping of tales, but its deep and varied combat ensures that players will come back to it time and time again to test their wits and take on more challenging difficulties. Clocking in at around 15 hours, there's also quite a lot of bang for your buck to go around. It might be a spinoff and a port, but for those interested in a deep yet accessible SRPG that you can take on the go, SteamWorld Heist deserves to be on your radar.
