Super Mario 3D All-Stars represents the pinnacle of platforming goodness and with perfect ports, as well as top notch optimisation for the console, it's a must-buy. For newcomers, they are getting the chance to experience the timeline of how Nintendo first experimented and mastered the 3D platformer, all the way up to it improving on the formula with each iteration. For stalwarts, it's a great excuse to dive back in and revisit a childhood hero in all his hat-wearing, moustache-twirling glory. Each inclusion has perfect character and level designs, as well as an ever-increasing level of innovation that simply cannot be matched by any other gaming company in the platforming genre. To sum up Super Mario 3D All-Stars in one word? Unmissable.
  2. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is not a very good compilation but two of the three games it contains are exceptional, one more from a historical perspective, the other from every angle imaginable. These are games that everyone owes it to themselves to play, and if the medium for doing so is this rather underwhelming collection that’s still far better than nothing at all.
  3. Sep 16, 2020
For those that have never played these games, or longtime fans looking to revisit some old favorites, Super Mario 3D All-Stars offers three of the best games of all time. After all these years, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy remain as captivating as ever.
  4. Sep 16, 2020
Despite availability issues, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is easily one of the greatest games on Switch and a celebration of some of the best Nintendo games of all-time.
  5. Sep 30, 2020
The game is out now at a decent price and is worth more than a couple hours of your time or, maybe your kid who never played these can learn a thing or two. Either way, pick it up. This package alone is worth owning a Switch for.
  6. Sep 23, 2020
While a few nitpicks hold it back from absolute perfection, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is an amazing collection and a definite must-buy.
  7. Sep 16, 2020
For any longtime fan returning to the series, or even those newer players curious about Mario’s roots, picking up Super Mario 3D All Stars is a no-brainer, with three top tier games packed to the brim with content providing some of the best platforming you’ll experience anywhere.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is for everyone who loves videogames. Hopefully, even though it’s a limited-time offer at the moment, Nintendo will change its mind and 3D All-Stars will be available for purchase even after March 31. [Issue#248, p.58]
  9. Sep 16, 2020
The Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection brings together three iconic Super Mario platformers, all with enhanced, crisper visuals. These games have never looked better. The added widescreen support for Super Mario Sunshine is a huge plus, but I'm disappointed the same care wasn't given to Super Mario 64… Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy are three near-perfect platforming adventures. In my opinion, they are must-play games that everyone should experience at some point, and what better time than now on the Nintendo Switch.
  10. Sep 21, 2020
What All-Stars lacks in extras and celebratory content, it more than makes up for with a boatload of music to enjoy and three masterwork video games to play. It is not hyperbole to say that any Switch collection is incomplete with Super Mario 3D All-Stars in it.

Dozens of hours of pure fun! Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a journey through an outstanding series, a feast – well, actually three feasts – for those who love platformers. Super Mario Galaxy alone makes this package worthwhile, but even the lowest rated among these games (Super Mario Sunshine) boasts a Metascore of 92! [12/2020, p.38]
  12. Oct 23, 2020
These three innovative, ground-breaking Mario games aren’t something to scoff at. They’re only ports that probably didn’t take much effort at all, but still, they all belong to the Nintendo hall of fame. Hard to understand why they’re going to stop selling them in 6 months…
  13. Oct 8, 2020
A collection of 3 marvelous, timeless titles, that could be improved upon a bit further, but still stand strong, defying the test of time. While the price should ironically be more like 35 instead of 60 and the availability should not suffer a six months long deadline, these are still one of the best Super Mario games of all time and nothing can change that. If you can get it - get it.
  14. Sep 28, 2020
While it's missing a few bells and whistles, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a wonderful collection of some of Nintendo's most beloved classics.
  15. Sep 28, 2020
It is disappointing that Nintendo chose not to update the titles in Super Mario 3D All-Stars for 2020, as some of the blemishes in the design of the three games are made more obvious so many years after their initial releases. That being said, the games are still excellent, with Super Mario Galaxy feeling like a perfect game.
  16. Sep 24, 2020
When picking up Super Mario 3D All-Stars, I expected authenticity as well as enhancements worthy of a modern remaster. This collection manages to meet those marks, but not without some unfortunate limitations. The All-Stars collection provides three content-packed Mario games for the price of one, a dream for fans of this series. For those who love challenging platformers, like Celeste or Super Mario Maker 2, I recommend picking this collection up. However, those on the fence might be better off looking elsewhere, as the All-Stars collection is a remaster with few bells and whistles. Though Nintendo could have done more to enhance these titles, they are still fantastic games on their own and definitely worth the purchase.
  17. 90
The collection as a whole might not bring much to the table beyond the games it transfers to a newer console in better shape than before, but when the games are this good that is enough.
  18. Sep 21, 2020
It goes without saying that these classic Mario titles hold up extremely well. Each one is still fantastic and even Mario 64 manages to remain fun without feeling outdated aside from its slightly wonky camera. Neither Sunshine or Galaxy have seen official re-releases since their debut in most countries and Super Mario 64 only had a mediocre virtual console port that was generally hated due to severe input lag. It’s fantastic to have all three of these now available on Switch and they absolutely hold up. It’s a huge disappointment that at the time of this review Nintendo has said that this collection will only be available until the end of March 2021 but hopefully they see some other form of release so it can be enjoyed for the entirety of the Switch’s lifetime. Anyone looking to play through the games again or try them out for the first time shouldn’t miss out on Super Mario 3D All-Stars.
  19. Sep 18, 2020
The three games that constitute Super Mario 3D All-Stars shine like a Power Star in 2020. Even with a bare minimum of sharpening up, they're brilliant games that are more than ready for a modern audience. Super Mario Galaxy, in particular, remains possibly the definitive 3D Mario game.
  20. Sep 18, 2020
I just can’t stop playing Super Mario 3D All-Stars. The joy of movement, the sharp controls, and the endlessly imaginative worlds keep bringing me back, even after all these years.
  21. Sep 16, 2020
Mario isn't for everyone - that's self-evident. But Super Mario 3D All-Stars combines three games so good that all platformer fans out there simply have to own it. Even if you already know Mario 64 and Galaxy from WiiU, it's still worth buying the set just for Sunshine. Even at full price. Not even kidding.
  22. Sep 16, 2020
Nintendo, porting these classics to Nintendo Switch, could have been more ambitious. Anyway, we should never forget that this collection has one great game and two masterpieces.
  23. 90
And that's the problem with reviewing 3D All-Stars. All three of the games have historical worth, remain highly playable today, and are ported competently enough that they work. You're not going to suddenly find Bowser unbeatable because bugs have trashed what was once a great game. However, this is Nintendo's most valuable property and mascot, and it's amazing that the company didn't do more with this package than they have here.
  24. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars gathers three iconic games in one star-studded collection on Nintendo Switch. The chance to experience these grand adventures at home or on the move is nothing short of a triumph, but many will be left disappointed that more wasn’t done to deliver improvements beneath the otherwise sharper surface.
  25. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is an amazing retrospective that shows us the first few steps that the series took going into three-demensional space. Even in this original form the trilogy easily stands tall among most modern games with it's timeless game design. All we can do now is just appreciate this masterpieces and celebrate Mario's anniversary together.
  26. Sep 16, 2020
Overall, it’s safe to say that Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a compilation worth its weight in gold. Not only have the games stood the test of time, they remain some of the best 3D platformers of the late ‘90s to early 2000s in existence. Between its visual resolution upgrades to the sheer flexibility of ways to play, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is the triple threat of the Nintendo Switch games’ library – well, until 31st March.
  27. 90
Although nothing here is likely to change your opinion on any of the titles, most people who have played these games don’t need any convincing. Each game holds up very well and shines behind its own compelling strengths. It’s hard to imagine what could have been — a fully revamped Super Mario 64, tweaks to a few of the more painful aspects of Super Mario Sunshine, or some fresh levels in Super Mario Galaxy, for example. But despite some disappointment with how little was done to enhance these games, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is ultimately a convenient, fun collection that enables you to take some of the best 3D Mario games wherever you go and swap between them with ease. It doesn’t get much better than that.
  28. Sep 16, 2020
In gameplay terms alone, Super Mario 3D All Stars is a predictable triumph, one which will delight new players and experienced fans alike. The only minor drawbacks are the package’s lack of extras or updates and its limited release.
  29. 90
It would be easy to ask for more, but as it stands these are the best officially available versions of the some of the greatest 3D platform games of all time. The HD visuals and elegant control adaptations are arguably close to bare minimum, but the charm, craft and imagination on display in these three games is timeless and undeniable.
  30. Sep 16, 2020
Nintendo seems intent on showing Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy as they were, warts and all – just in HD and playable on the Switch. Does the camera in Mario 64 kind of suck? Yes, it does. How has Sunshine come out best in this? I’m not sure. Are the controls for Galaxy here a bit of a problem? Maybe. But despite all this, you’ve got three tremendous games which are all still a ton of fun.
  31. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Star is possibly the best compilation of platformers ever. It's obvious that Nintendo could have improved these games more, especially Super Mario 64. However, it still maintains the essence of three of the most influential titles in the videogame industry.
  32. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy are not only two of the greatest Mario games ever, they're two of the greatest video games ever. Each brims with ideas, with intelligent and intuitive design, and with an irresistible pull on the player to get through just one more level before calling it a night - which then becomes one more, and another, until your Switch battery dies. Even without anything extra added, and the non-native-platform awkwardness of Galaxy appreciated, they're essentials. Super Mario Sunshine is also included.
  33. Sep 16, 2020
Whether the year it was released has affected the way Super Mario 3D All-Stars came together, we’ll probably never know, but it still comes with a wholehearted recommendation simply due to the quality of the games.
  34. Sep 16, 2020
We’ve had an absolute blast playing through these three gems all over again, especially now they look sharper than ever. It’s a shame that the presentation is practically barebones with no bonus content beyond the soundtracks, but there can still be no denying the quality of the games on offer here. This is the Beatles’ Greatest Hits of the video game world, and is an absolute treat whether you’re reliving it in HD or discovering it for the first time.
  35. Sep 26, 2020
If one wants to experience the masterpieces of the Mario franchise, the game is a must-buy. Each of the games deserve more polishing, but now they seem just so outdated from graphics to UI.
  36. Sep 16, 2020
Nintendo's modesty sometimes makes us desperate. They are the owners of three games that, separately, are masterpieces, and we believe that this collection has not been given the importance it deserved. Even so, it is an essential collection of games for fans of Super Mario and 3D platforms.
  37. Sep 18, 2020
Extra content, visual improvements or bonuses are scarce, but nonetheless these are some of the most important and influential classics of 3D platforming history.
  38. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a good collection, but more because of the games it contains than because of Nintendo's effort in making it. The absence of extras and of Super Mario Galaxy 2 are an unpleasant disappointment.
  39. Oct 9, 2020
Three big games that today are as fun as they were a couple of years ago. A travel through memory lane that will remind you about the magic that only Nintendo has while making a long-lasting masterpieces on this medium. We could ask for more extra content, but the fact is that these 3 games are fun as hell today.
  40. Sep 22, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a collection of three of the most genre-defining releases in 3D platformer history. It brings these games together and makes them easily accessible to give gamers a chance to experience these titles for the first time or the hundredth. I’m left wishing that there was more included with the releases such as additional options or extras, but it’s undeniable that this is a must-play for Switch owners.
  41. Sep 21, 2020
In the end, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a perfectly adequate collection of three very good games. Even if Sunshine isn't to your taste, Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy are two of the finest platformers ever made, and they absolutely make the collection worthwhile. The only disappointment is that not enough was done to adjust and touch up the games for the Switch. Despite that shortcoming, there's hardly a better bang for your buck on the Switch than Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and it is a must-have for any Switch owner. Just remember that for some reason, it's only available for purchase through March 2021.
  42. Sep 16, 2020
Nintendo could, and should have done more to make this game feel a bit more celebratory, and some omissions are weird, but this collection of games does give us three incredible games on the Nintendo Switch.
  43. 85
While yes, the updates are restrained somewhat in their ambition, the end result is undeniable. Even if some elements show their age, this is without a doubt, the best, and most versatile release these three classic 3D platformers have ever received.
  44. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars contains three legendary games and this package allows you to experience all of them, the way you remember them. Whether or not these games hold up as competitive, contemporary pieces of entertainment is one question, but they do serve as an amazing time machine taking me to the moments I shared with friends and loved ones years ago, and this is a perfect way for you to form new memories with yours. This compilation features three of the very best 3D platformers of all time, at their best.
  45. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario Bros. celebrates it's 35th anniversary and what other way to celebrate with some of the best Mario games ever made in one collection? Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a fantastic package with three games that withstood the test of time, even though they have their flaws. The graphical update is minimal though, but the gameplay quality of the games is good enough that it doesn't even really needs to lean on them anyway.
  46. Sep 16, 2020
Hey, guess what you all? I did it! I made a definitive ruling on Mario Sunshine. I'm sure this won't be debated for another 18 years.
  47. 85
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is another must-own game for Nintendo Switch. It brings together three games from three different generations and shows just how timeless the Mario franchise is. At the same time, it is a shame that Nintendo didn't celebrate the iconic franchise a little more throughout the presentation of the package.
  48. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is brimming with charm and fun. It's surprising that these games released so long ago because they have held up beautifully and thoroughly prove Nintendo's brilliant level of creativity over the years. Here's hoping for many more games to come.
  49. Sep 24, 2020
So while yes, these are three games that Mario fans around the globe will likely love, it’s also a little hard to wholeheartedly suggest rushing out to pick up this collection simply because it feels like a barebones kind of thing, especially for a franchise and anniversary milestone that deserves better. The ports are well done, the emulation feels spot on to me, and it’s fun to go back and revisit all three of these games. But I don’t think it’s unfair to expect a little more from Nintendo as the owner and caretaker of these historic titles, and would hope that we see big improvements on that front for future collections.
  50. Sep 20, 2020
While the respect Nintendo is showing to the titles is insufficient, it’s still hard for anyone to argue against a collection of three of the greatest games of all time.
  51. Mar 5, 2021
The classic games have been ported over to the Nintendo Switch with upscaled graphics. The old controls feel clunky compared to modern gaming standards, but if you already love these games, this makes for a great purchase.
  52. Oct 31, 2020
The three games it encompasses are fantastic, so Mario 3D All Stars is still worth buying. However, Nintendo is, ultimately, coasting off of the back of some amazing work it did more than a decade ago to sell what is ultimately a disappointingly barebones, facile celebration of gaming’s most important icon who truly deserves better.
  53. Sep 30, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars contains three of Mario's very best adventures, now redesigned to work optimally on the Switch. Being able to carry these classics is a joy, and all the titles have been spruced up compared to their models. In terms of gameplay, the games have aged with dignity and hold up surprisingly well in a post-Super Mario Odyssey world. However, we do miss Super Mario Galaxy 2.
  54. Sep 29, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is certainly rough around the edges as far as a classic collection is concerned, but there is no denying the impact of all three games. The omission of Galaxy 2 and the questionable ports are certainly head scratchers, but that doesn’t change the fact that this collection will deliver hours of fun for Mario players old and new. Another solid title for the Switch lineup. Now make sure to snag it before Nintendo removes it from sale…at least until they break it up and sell them individually that is.
  55. Sep 24, 2020
Little effort was put into modernizing Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and somehow, that's still more than enough.
  56. Sep 23, 2020
So rather than looking at what this collection could have been, it’s easier and simpler to see what’s here and decide if that’s enough for you. If one of these games is an all-time favorite, that even these marginal adjustments make them the best and most convenient versions could make a sale for you. There’s nothing here to “fix” them if you didn’t like them the first time. You get what you get, and Nintendo’s confidence in the core products isn’t unwarranted.
  57. Sep 20, 2020
Much of what new players might see could come across as cliche for 3D platformers, but only because would-be challengers plundered Mario's ideas for their own mascot-driven adventures.
  58. Sep 17, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a pretty well-made HD collection of three top Nintendo games.
  59. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a bundle that brings together the best of Nintendo's 3D platformers, and as such, is quite impressive, but the port feels a bit lazy, with few-to-no improvements, and a premium price tag that can be quite a turn-off.
  60. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars marks the long awaited arrival of some stone cold classics on Nintendo Switch, even if it doesn't always give them the esteemed treatment they deserve to truly shine in the modern era.
  61. Sep 16, 2020
For those whose favorite games list features the three titles in this collection, you’ll probably be over the moon with the opportunity to play them all at any time on either your TV or on the go. Those who missed out on these entries in gaming history will likely have a tough time adapting to their controls but will find wonder and joy in playing Super Mario Galaxy.
  62. Sep 16, 2020
So in the end there is pure joy to finally be able to play the classics on the switch, and the faded aftertaste that so much more would have been possible here.
  63. Sep 16, 2020
In spite of everything, do not miss the opportunity to venture once again among castles, green pipes and mushroom-shaped power-ups: there is something to rejoice, with the lightheartedness and the smile of when you become a little child again.
  64. Sep 16, 2020
It is undeniable that Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy are 3 titles that border on excellence. However, as a compilation, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is far from perfect.
  65. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a must have if you love classic platform games, but Nintendo could have done way more to celebrate Mario's 35th birthday.
  66. Sep 16, 2020
Three fantastic games -one that feels a little old, one that still in good shape and another that is the same masterpiece- together in a somewhat lackluster compilation.
  67. Sep 16, 2020
Taken all together, Mario 3D All-Stars is a worthwhile collection, featuring the best versions of Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy to appear on a Nintendo system. Although the individual games have been sparingly touched up and there's little in the way of ancillary material to pore over, the titles themselves hold up well and are a delight to revisit. Despite their age, the games are still rife with inventive ideas and surprises, which more than makes up for the collection's presentational shortcomings.
  68. Sep 16, 2020
The Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection could stand a few more extras. Customizable controls would be great, as would sound options, design documents, or artwork. When you think about everything the original All-Stars offered—three graphically upgraded Mario games, plus a "lost" game—3D All-Stars is a bit lacking. That said, the games in Super Mario 3D All-Stars still hold up today. I'm surprised how fun Super Mario 64 still is, and Super Mario Galaxy remains one of the heroic plumber's best outings. As for Super Mario Sunshine, well, that's still up to personal taste.
  69. Sep 16, 2020
It feels like this review is a list of shortcomings – and to be honest, it mostly is – but one can’t ignore the sheer quality and classic appeal of the trio of games included. However they’re wrapped up, the main thing you’re going to be doing is playing the games, and so three classics bundled together running well and looking as you remember is a fine offering from Nintendo. I still think Mario deserved a more lavish birthday celebration, but the classic titles in this collection really can’t be diminished.
  70. Sep 16, 2020
I think I'm in the camp of gamers sick of remasters and instead wanting proper remakes. It's worked for Crash Bandicoot, for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, and it looks to have worked for the upcoming Mafia Definitive Edition. I'd imagine that 64 and Sunshine with some modern sensibility would be spectacular as well.
  71. Sep 16, 2020
There’s no denying that Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy are at the top of the list of Nintendo’s most outstanding games, and the 3D All-Stars collection serves as a retrospective and reminder of Mario’s growth over the course of 11 years.
  72. Sep 16, 2020
Nintendo has delivered a joyous compilation of three platforming classics, but it's difficult not to feel like it could have been even more.
  73. Sep 16, 2020
Even as a collection of well-done ports, 3D All-Stars feels lacking.
  74. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All Stars' package of three of the best 3D Mario games are just enhanced and tweaked enough to be an enjoyable revisiting, but without removing the classic charm.
  75. Even Super Mario Galaxy alone is a big reason to buy this pack.
  76. Ninty Fresh Magazine
    Dec 21, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is three masterpiece games in a lacklustre package thanks to poor upgrades, contrived control choices and barely any extra content. [Issue #2, p. 72]
  77. Sep 28, 2020
It's tough because you should play the games, but this collection is only a must-have if you’ve never played them or have no means of playing the copies you own. Otherwise, the included soundtracks are not enough to make this 35th anniversary package feel special enough to warrant a buy.
  78. Sep 23, 2020
This feels like a missed opportunity and while the respective games are great to play, the collection as a whole feels somewhat lacking in a technical sense. With any luck, Nintendo could patch the collection to have all the games run at 60 fps and at 1080p, but I am not holding my breath on that one.
  79. Sep 16, 2020
Finally, the way Super Mario 3D All-Stars is offered is not very consumer-friendly, to say the least, as the bundle will no longer be available physically or digitally after March 31, 2021... It is also easy to imagine what else this collection could have offered; here and there Nintendo could certainly have gone a step further in terms of new features.
  80. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars isn't particularly good at bringing Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy into the HD era on Switch, although the visual improvements are there. But just having all three tracks in a common compilation makes it interesting.
  81. Nintendo Force Magazine
    Apr 28, 2021
Nintendo had the chance to knock this one out of the park, but they settled for a bunt. [Issue #49 – November/December 2020, p. 72]
  82. Oct 5, 2020
Whilst these are great games, this isn’t a great collection. With almost no extras, very little tweaking of the games for the Switch and no Super Mario Galaxy 2 this just isn’t quite what I’d hoped for. I’m still enjoying the games, but for many people this won’t represent particularly great value. If you don’t already have the games then get it. If you do, you might want to give it some thought first.
  83. 70
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a lackluster collection of three (mostly) excellent, timeless games. Nintendo has shown us what it can do when the effort is put in with 2004's Super Mario 64 DS, so the lack of attention afforded here stings all the more.
  84. Sep 25, 2020
Despite boasting three of the most beloved platformers of all time, Super Mario 3D All-Stars too often resembles a hurried re-release as opposed to an act of careful curation
  85. Sep 25, 2020
A collection that includes three all-time classics, but not in the way we would have loved to see and play. For their suggested retail price and their limited availability, we would have loved to see a project equal to Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES, rather than a mostly upscaled increase in resolution and all the necessary conversion edits. Being a limited release, it should address only those who haven’t had the chance to play the games in their original release time. The rest could just unearth their old consoles and give these games a go as intended.
  86. Sep 24, 2020
A decent collection. It doesn’t try to impress with extra features or fancy padding; it simply puts three games from the past in a simple collection for old fans to enjoy. But without even the slightest of tweaks aside from a resolution boost, Super Mario 64 is painful to play. Sunshine and Galaxy, on the other hand, are a joy to revisit, but they’re still a pretty hard sell when the superior-in-every-way Super Mario Odyssey is much more readily available.
  87. Sep 23, 2020
There’s no denying that Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy are all masterpieces of their time. But without modern trimmings, this is a series that will only fully be appreciated by incredibly hardcore fans. Newcomers to these games may find themselves quickly turned off by the limitations of older software and controls. So while fun, the lack of effort put into Super Mario 3D All-Stars is very disappointing.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars offers three spectacular games in the least inspired way possible. It's amazing to see these games reaching a whole new generation of gamers, but taking into account that Mario is Nintendo's flagship series, they could have made a greater effort.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is frustrating, because it could be more. It could be so much more. But even with Nintendo phoning it in, the games themselves are such classics that they're still worth putting in your Switch library. Just make sure you add it before it goes away forever.

If you’re a Nintendo fan, you’re going to want to get Super Mario 3D All-Stars. However, just because the games are good doesn’t mean that these ports are great. They’re adequate, which has to be enough, I guess.

    Quotation forthcoming.
  92. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario deserved a better celebration, because this collection is incomplete and It doesn't improve the 3D classic titles in a proper way. However, these are still incredible games and it's good to have them in Nintendo Switch.
  93. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars offers three excellent games in close to their original forms, but it misses a lot of opportunities to polish and improve them.
  94. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 64 keeps its whole interest from historic and nostalgic points of view, a revolutionary approach that Super Mario Sunshine spreads in every sense of the word, while Super Mario Galaxy takes off literally outer space, among the brightest three dimensional platformers. Such true ports preserve these masterpieces' authenticity, but the Super Mario 3D All-Stars title suggested more, both in content and style. Brilliant HD renditions with fully available soundtracks on the go don't shine enough to overshadow some old issues and Super Mario Galaxy 2's glaring omission from this otherwise stellar collection.
  95. Sep 16, 2020
Three incredible games that, gameplay-wise, have barely aged, packed in disappointing collection with virtually no new features. It’s a shame that Nintendo didn’t try harder to update these games, but that aside, these three Marios remain incredible.

Three of the most popular Super Mario games ever finally make their way to Nintendo Switch with Super Mario 3D All-Stars - warts and all.
  97. Sep 16, 2020
Much like an actual 35th birthday party (I assume), Super Mario 3D All-Stars just feels a little halfhearted. It bundles together three great platformers, all of which benefit from the bump up to HD resolutions, and Nintendo have done well to adapt the varying controls to suit the Nintendo Switch, but there's a squandered opportunity to enhance and go beyond this in a meaningful way. Maybe Nintendo are saving themselves for the big five-oh in 2035?

Nintrendo packed some truly unforgettable classics into a single pack. And forgot to celebrate them the way they deserved to be.
  99. Dec 16, 2020
The three games in this collection deserve to be played by as many people as possible, but it is a pity that the most accessible version of them so far has been made with so little care.
  100. Sep 16, 2020
Despite collecting three of Mario’s most well-known games, Super Mario 3D All Stars doesn’t justify their porting onto the Switch. With minimal improvements, few features that truly make it feel like an “Anniversary celebration” and some bafflingly lazy design choices, 3D All Stars feels like more like a quick cash grab.
  101. Sep 27, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a commemorative edition and one that's mostly about nostalgia. This means that players looking for a reinvention of the three classics included herewith will not find what they're looking for, as the contents on this release consist of something as close to the originals as possible, with only a few tweaks added. This will satisfy those looking for a strictly nostalgic experience, but it will also highlight how Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine did not age perfectly. Beyond that, it's difficult to understand why there's a one-year time limit on the availability of this release, or why there's so little additional content for an anniversary edition other than the three games' soundtracks. In any case, those looking for a revival experience will be well served.

The standalone games themselves of course deserve higher scores, but the way this bundle is published seems very frugal, especially considering the 60 euro price tag that comes with it. In that manner, Nintendo could learn from the honorable and generous ways in which companies like Activision re-release their classics.

A collection like 3D All-Stars would have been a great chance to celebrate Mario's recent history. In-game extras like concept art, developer interviews, or even playable prototype areas could have given fans a new appreciation for games that many players probably feel have already been picked clean. And while the ability to play each game's soundtrack inside the game is nice, the included songs are not hard to find all over the Internet. It might seem petty to ask more from a $60 package than to collect some of the greatest 3D platforming games ever created. At the same time, games this great deserve more respect and attention than the slapdash collection Nintendo has put together here.

Two of Nintendo's finest, and one of its most interesting, come together in a compilation that isn't worthy of their greatness.
  3. Sep 16, 2020
Regardless of its shortcomings, this still serves as a great way to play these three games on modern, portable technology. Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a must-have for all die-hard fans of Nintendo's flagship franchise, but it's unfortunate to have it outshone not only by the collection's contemporaries, but also by the collection it was essentially modeled after nearly three decades ago. If you're on the fence about Super Mario 3D All-Stars, you can't go wrong with these three classic adventures in one neat package. However, you'll want to grab these before they disappear forever; Nintendo currently plans on pulling the sale of Super Mario 3D All-Stars at the end of March 2021.

To break it down simply, this collection consists of one historical relic, one noteworthy experiment, and one bonafide masterpiece, all delivered in a convenient $60 package. The overall lack of bells and whistles make Super Mario 3D All Stars a bit of a disappointment, but taken as individual works, the games speak for themselves. While I would have loved to have seen a collection more worthy of Mario’s long and winding career, Super Mario 3D All-Stars does just enough to satisfy a longtime fan like myself, but misses the mark by not providing any of the updates and extras that would have really made this collection of classics sing.

Every game in Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a triumph, a clear indication of why Mario has remained an inextricable part of gaming history. They don’t even have to tell you how to jump in these games anymore; Nintendo knows that every player’s thumb will inevitably hover to the appropriate button. Although I have my qualms with this collection—strange inconsistencies in the Super Mario Sunshine port chief among them—it does what it set out to do: chart Mario’s evolution from a bushwhacking pioneer to the inimitable mascot of 3D platforming.

It's a shame Nintendo didn't do more to up the 35th anniversary celebration vibes in this collection. As I told you up front, though, Super Mario 3D All-Stars remains a superb collection of gaming classics and a must-own for every Nintendo-loving Switch user.
  7. Sep 16, 2020
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a perfect re-creation of an imperfect batch of games. In the case of Super Mario Sunshine, those imperfections are far too consistent and devastating to recommend the game. Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy, though, are both fantastic. The quality of both titles is so high that some unfortunate drawbacks (dated visuals in the former, motion controls in the latter) aren’t enough to stymie the pure excellence on hand. If anything, Super Mario 3D All-Stars shows the breadth of what a 3D Mario game can be, and much of that is truly excellent. Though seriously, y’all, Mario Sunshine sucks.
  8. Sep 16, 2020
Of course, there are other ways to play some of these games, and it would be nice to have added titles like Galaxy 2. But having these pivotal games altogether in one package on the Switch makes them incredibly accessible; it’s been nice to be able to pick up the tablet and squeeze in a few stars when I have some time. It might just be the most entertaining way to explore the history of 3D game design.
  9. Sep 16, 2020
3D All-Stars is a paradox: a collection of great games and a missed opportunity. These games deserved better, a respectful contextualization of their place in the history books. But ultimately, in my heart of hearts, I'm just happy to get a chance to declare this: Super Mario Sunshine was good.

A piss take to the originals and a cash cow service.... To ask full price too.... Wow, Nintendo did a low blow with this release.
