Fans of tabletop gaming are definitely familiar with the title of "Warhammer," a widely popular strategy game that has spanned years of play that has branched out to a variety of accessible mediums. From mobile experiences down to full console releases, Warhammer's franchise has conquered myriad platforms to bring fantasy gameplay to players all over.
Warhammer Quest is a return to the roots of the game, a strategy game based on the tabletop experience -- Fighting armies of rats, bats, and spiders while hoping to kick down the doors of loot stashes and get the drop on boss monsters. The main objective is usually easily apparent: Fight stuff, get loot, level up, fight bigger stuff, repeat. For those of us who are accustomed, and at times addicted, the shameless grind is a song we know every word to.
The beginning of the game can come across as rather tedious: move your characters across the map, fight monsters (where you mostly miss each other,) and attempt to traipse through the dungeon safely to obtain meager reward. The true joys are in the obtaining of new skills, new items, and more power for your characters to increase their versatility in battle. These are the benefits of the grind: phenomenal measurable upgrades that allow you to see a pathway of growth.
The game comes alive way after you gain your bearings in the world of maps and figures, dungeons becoming a place to put mindless monsters out of their misery for a chance at item drops to equip your party -- collecting an array of weapons that span the differing classes covered by your characters. The standard party configuration is definitely workable, but the unique approach to DLC in this title can certainly shake things up, allowing you to add new classes and fresh faces to the fray.
There's an insane amount of customization to this title, invoking a feeling of personal dedication to your team that pushes you onward. This is definitely a unique merger of tabletop to console, and one I would say is a great entry point to anyone that is new to the series.
-DLC is actually worth it!
-Slow to start
-Difficult learning curve
Warhammer Quest is a perfect way to enter into the long-established world of this popular franchise. The pocket-sized gaming experiences provided by the Switch really shine in something that used to require hours of dedication, where you can now offer minutes at a time to your party without the need to lump all your friends together to loudly swear at each other in a vain effort to destroy the largest rat in the chamber for his shiny necklace.… Expand
