Technical limitations aside, Worms Rumble on Nintendo Switch is a solid addition to the eShop, which is surprisingly sparse in its collection of Worms titles – Worms W.M.D. being the only other title available digitally right now. The better Worms Rumble experience can be found on other platforms, but the Switch version is good enough for wherever you have just a few minutes to play or while traveling.

Worms Rumble can be an enjoyable ride, and it is certainly a bold, fresh take on the franchise. However, it is ultimately a step in the wrong direction. Worms Rumble fails to capture the essence of previous games, and adopting this style of gameplay causes it to grow stale quickly.

Worms Rumble risks trying to change the classic formula and fails in the attempt. To make matters worse, performance issues make it difficult even for fans of the style.

Worms Rumble is a reasonably fun game in its own right; the battles feel fast, the weapons pack a decent punch, and the addition of zip wires make traversal a blast. The problem is that in transitioning to a multiplayer-focused battle royale style game, much of what made Worms so iconic in the past is now gone, with far fewer weapons and absolutely no destructible environments. Add to this a rather limited selection of levels, and you’ve got an experience that may well be fun for a short while, but certainly won’t keep you engaged for the long haul.

Worms Rumble takes a few elements from the Worms series and recontextualizes them as a multiplayer-focused and action-based title. On top of failing in its most basic gameplay elements, the Switch version also features many annoying bugs.

The many options and weapons will keep you busy with the game for hours. However, you should use the training to properly use the new game elements. The developers keep releasing new maps and challenges. Thus, a round of "Worms Rumble" should be possible every now and then in the coming days and weeks. Expand

With Rumble the folks at Team17 have made some changes... and I’d imagine they’ll be the source of some controversy for some but a positive step for others. Moving to a more active multiplayer platform shooter, complete with cross-platform (a crucial move to give its online-only nature a chance) support, the crazy guns and occasional comments as you play are both there but the feel of play is obviously radically different. Whether or not people will enjoy this style will vary from person to person but rather than dwell on my middling feelings over the result (the weapons are pretty unbalanced, the learning curve to get better while people already in the groove blow you away is a challenge, and the scale of things doesn’t make this a great handheld play candidate) I will state one major concern: Trying to fight stagnation and always releasing the same thing is a worthwhile battle, no doubt, just this move has taken the Worms franchise from a space it pretty well singularly owned to one chock full of competition. Granted, it has much more style and polish than the majority of its new competitors, but I also think the move diminishes what always made the series unique.
