Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker is a joyous experience in an age where many games go for the grim. This low-cost, high-value puzzler’s packed full of sweet characters, delightful visuals, and its multi-objective level design lets nubile gamers feel accomplished at simply beating a stage while still leaving some nice challenge for the more hardcore among us.

Treasure Tracker may be relatively budget-priced, but it doesn't feel like a cheap, throwaway creation. Every inch of its nearly 100 stages and bonus levels has been buffed to a spit-shine finish, and the Nintendo content factory has produced dozens of one-of-a-kind stage concepts to explore here.

If anything, the release of Captain Toad goes to show just how confident Nintendo is, and more so with how much it understands its audience. In a blockbuster season filled with plenty of firearms and fistfights, Captain Toad shows us more creativity and style than many new IPs out there.

While Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker certainly succeeds brilliantly in most of its puzzle-platforming endeavors, it does feel slightly short in the end, and a fussy camera can sabotage sequences that require quick actions and quick decisions.

Indeed, its central mechanic feels rather like a statement in itself; perhaps this is Nintendo’s way of motivating its designers and players alike to embrace the idea of approaching the familiar from a fresh perspective.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a colorful game with nice puzzles to solve while chilling out. Another interesting Wii U exclusive.

The little mushroom man finally gets his name on the marquee, and the result is a charming, unique, and puzzle-heavy adventure.

The game has lot of challenges for all ages, don't believe what haters say, the game HAS challenges even if you're not a child. You'll spent good time playing it. The time challenge is another great addition and the last level ;) (I can't say too much but you'll better play it by your own but it's almost impossible). I hope they add DLC with more levels or something with the amiibos. Expand

Its refreshing to see puzzle ganes coming back with a bang. I am a huge Nintendo fan who was just a little behind with the WiiU, when i got the system i got this game with it and nothing else and i couldn't have been happier.

With tight controls, fantastic asthetics, beautiful music, gorgeous graphics and addictice gameplay this game is absolitely fantastic, i gave it a 9 as for a 10/10 the game has to be perfect but this is possibly the closest thing to perfect i have played in a long time.

Play this game, you wont be disappointed.

The story and boss fights are very clever, being based around Captain Toad's inability to jump. The boss fights are fantastic but I really wish there were more.
Toad and Toadette control very nicely and the game uses the features of the Wii U gamepad in clever ways. The touch screen and gyroscope are used on multiple occasions including very fun, but slow paced mine cart levels in which you through turnips at enemies, coins and blocks.

Beating a level in Captain Toad is easy but completing a level can be much harder. You may have to find a hidden item, collect a certain amount of coins or defeat all the enemies. This adds replay value and extends play time for the completionists out there.

Overall, this game is great, charming and an excellent addition to the Mario universe.

The issues of thisCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a unique puzzle game weighed down by a stiff control scheme and bland, basic puzzles. The issues of this game surface a few levels after the game starts. These first puzzles do a great job establishing all the mechanics, but have very little depth to them, and as the game progresses, they hardly get more involved. I do not hate easy games, however puzzle games in which the puzzle has very little depth or nuance are unappealing. This main problem wouldn't be so much of an issue in my opinion if the puzzles were made with an open-ended nature in mind. I enjoy some of the easier puzzles in puzzle games because they're so approachable and can be solved in a myriad of different ways. The puzzles in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker almost all amount to moving the camera to find an object that was invisible previously, then using that object to progress. These can hardly be called puzzles, because there is no input by the player. There are occasional levels that consistently avoid this problem, but the vast majority of levels unfortunately use this tactic quite a bit, and as a result can get stale fast. There are, however, things about this game that I enjoyed. I thought the artstyle was beautiful. The more childish, plump, and nonthreatening enemy designs are complimented perfectly by the toy-like levels with the artstyle from Mario 3D World. When the game presents interesting puzzles instead of the puzzles which mostly rely on camera movement, the game can be really fun. Unfortunately, however, there are not enough creative moments such as these to make up for the overall basic puzzles and level design, so I'm going to give Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker a 4 out of 10. It certainly has appeal, but for me, the appeal is too niche to recommend unless you really like easy puzzle games. Expand
