This is the perfect entry point into the series for newcomers. And for everyone else, it is one of the best JRPGs of all time.

Final Fantasy X remains a genre-defining legend while Final Fantasy X-2 still dances through its saccharine and exploitative expectations. Neither feel especially ravaged by time. As either an academic interest in turn-of-the-century gaming or a hopeful re-acquaintance with a bygone phenomenon, the collection makes it easy to invest another lifetime across Spira.

Of all the legacy Final Fantasy games that have come to Xbox One, the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is the most comprehensive of the lot. The spiritually deep story is every bit as moving today as it was nearly twenty years ago, and surprisingly, each title here has aged remarkably well, both visually and mechanically. Sporting over 200 hours worth of gameplay, complete with refinements and added extras, returning to Spira should be a no-brainer.

Final Fantasy X was the end of a golden age in the history of this franchise. It may be that the nostalgia intensifies the situation, but in this episode, it's hard not to get caught by one of the most complete stories of recent years, with charismatics, characters and a gameplay between between tradition and the avant-garde. With this remast in HD there is no excuse not to return to Spira from the hands of Tidus, Yuna and company to relive one of the best games of the Final Fantasy series.

Ploughing through both games is going to take at least 100 hours, probably closer to 200 if you’re thorough. They may be close to 20 years old now, but these Final Fantasy games still have charm.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 is a monster collection of the series in the peak of its greatness. FFX alone set so many standards for JRPGs that still hold true today. Both games are well represented here, and it is nice to see them show up on Microsoft and Nintendo consoles. The price tag may be steep, but the content matches it pound for pound. If for some reason you have never experienced these games, get this collection. It is more than worth your time to see a genuine piece of JRPG history.

Square Enix is not likely to ever make Final Fantasy games like X or X-2. They were the last of their kind that had involvement from Hironobu Sakaguchi, and his mark has been missing since his departure from the company. Xbox One is blessed to have one of the best versions to play what might have been the artistic highpoint for the Japanese RPG juggernaut. These hold up very well, and will keep a Final Fantasy neophyte's attention, should they look past some short comings like low-detail NPCs and some minor plot holes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster offers two remastered Square Enix Classics. While Final Fantasy X is a turn-based RPG, with a mixture of exploration and random battles the we have come to remember the series roots of many classic Final Fantasy games offered to us by Square Enix over the years. Playing as Tidus an athlete living in the metropolis of Zanarkand. You will witness your home being destroyed by an enormous mythical creature called Sin and then wake 1000 years in the future. Sin has terrorized the world of Spira in cycles ever since. Even once Sin is destroyed it eventually comes back, and the religious factions of Spira are convinced that the people’s indiscretions are largely the reason why. You join a pilgrimage with a summoner Yuna along with her guardians and friends to destroy Sin yet once again to bring peace to Spira once more. While Final Fantasy X-2 is a direct sequel it is set by a much lighter story in a freshly liberated Spira where you instead take on the role of Yuna. While it’s a very different game with a revamped combat system at your disposal, X-2 features a turn based combat system that runs in a "real-time" manner although you have the ability to slow the real time clock. Instead of seven characters, you control only three this time around. Customization instead comes in the form of "dresspheres", which are essentially 20 different classes you can swap amongst on the fly. You build loadouts of "dresspheres" using a system referred to as the garment grid, which offers plenty of flexibility during battle as long as you’ve planned accordingly for the variety of scenarios. Timing it right allows you to chain attacks for higher damage as well. Both are excellent remasters and well executed for the Xbox One. This collection will keep any Square Enix fan busy reliving the epic journeys at hand or enjoying them for the first time in their remastered glory. The price of admission is a little high however for these remasters compared to the other recent remasters made for Xbox fans, however as we have seen in the past Square is always good at offering sales on their games to allow for everyone to eventually add these little gems to their Xbox gaming libraries. If you're a true Final Fantasy fanatic you won't want to wait for a sale, other enjoy them for what are possibly the best remasters I've yet to play on the Xbox console. Expand

While instantly aesthetically displeasing and having bad writing and bad voice acting [really campy b-movie level], it really did seem like it was an 8/10 early on. As the game goes on it becomes more and more abrasive for many reasons.

-The random encounters are all rock paper scissors fights where you hit really heavy and so do they, so you have to manually heal your party after every single battle

-They hype up this big sports game in the story, then when you finally get to play it, it is a rigged match made for you loose badly in, and then instead of that mattering for the story like they hyped it to, the game disappears into the menu at save spots as an optional minigame

-there are very annoying puzzles with unnecessary menus that pop up anytime you want to do something

-There are very few enemy types, they get reused often and in the same exact combinations

-There are very very cheap enemies that can wipe out your entire party before you even have a turn later on, making them harder than bosses

    -the protagonist is exceedingly dumb

-a sex scene happens completely out of no where with no lead up romance

-there is a race of people who speak a different language, and you find books that teach you one letter each, and you never piece it together. You are supposed to combine the letters your friends have found on the same game system by combining the save files. So you go through the game watching all this dialogue in a different language annoyed that you can't understand it and are missing parts of the story.

-the airship in this game is unusable

-they didn't bother to lip-sync the characters to the english audio

-an entire level where you have to constantly be on edge for lighting to hit you

    -and you can't skip cutscenes

This last point brings me to where I quit. After a 5 minute long cutscene, I was faced with a boss that killed one of my party members before I even had a turn, and then later killed them all in one hit. When you get a game over, it doesn't offer to reload from the start of the fight or the cutscene OR your last save file. It goes back to loading the main menu. You have to click through to prevent the opening movie to play, load your game, walk back to where you were, and sit through the same poorly written, poorly acted cutscene again, only to face the same poorly designed boss.

I truly do not know why this game is highly regarded, I am more disappointed in the community than the game.

At first it seemed pretty cool. I could play through as a giant crab if i wanted to. The job system is cool. I love their goth friend. The way they tease each other is funny and lighthearted. But the more I played, the more sloppy the design became. I went to a place with a mission, it didn't tell me where that mission was, eventually I encountered a red "go there!" arrow on my mini-map, and when i went where it told me, there was nothing to do there. So I tried another mission and it involved going through an entire level you already went through in FFX just to have someone run away so you have to backtrack through that entire same level again, all with random encounters. This is a sloppy mess.
