Tour De France 2020 is a functional game and did manage to engage me on some occasions but I was left wanting for a more fleshed out experience of actually riding in a TDF event and could have really done without so much faffing with multiple team members. If you like the management side, this might be for you, but if you want a more in depth cycling experience… No yellow jersey for this one.

Once you get past the boredom and try to strategize your way through the race, Tour de France does have some depth to it. But because of the niche market for which it is made I don’t find it worth the price of admission. Even local co-op doesn’t save it. In my opinion, the developers could do well to package this with an exercise bike rather than a console release with gamepad controls.

At the end of the day I just can’t see any reason why any gamer – or bike fan for that matter – would want to fork out on a game that is pretty much a carbon copy of the game that came before it, and of the one before that. For that reason, recommending a purchase of Tour de France 2020 on Xbox One is a seriously hard push.

Tour de France 2020 allows for you to take on a Pro Team and manage them as they make their way up in the world. This has you making the crewTour de France 2020 allows for you to take on a Pro Team and manage them as they make their way up in the world. This has you making the crew of riders in the hope you can turn them into champions, and if they fail you can ship them out for a rider who is more capable. Mixing and matching a team of climbers, sprinters, and well rounded riders brings some tactical thought to the game. You can play through each event as normal, or simulate to get through the seasons quicker (I particularly enjoy sports titles I can manage vs playing every event). This option is available in all the game modes in Tour de France 2020 and this is where this feels most suited and allowing for a more managerial role to come into play. The Pro Leader mode which covers the same material but requests you to keep an eye on one particular rider, completing the objectives and seeing your skills increase. Whether or not you have the time and dedication to spend building your own Pro up to race-winning levels is there for those who wish to do so. There is also the enjoyable challenges. Visually Tour de France 2020 is no great advance, however it hasn’t really hasn't much in the previous offerings in the series either. When racing, the mechanics that should be the main focus of any game are still disappointing like pulling a trigger and then rapidly pressing a sprint button really isn’t engaging, especially when crashing isn’t a consideration while riders bounce off each over and even happily riding through railings and spectators. The bikes look decent, with a whole range of colors found in both those and the nicely replicated team sets are that of the official teams. I’d like to see a variety of bikes and wheels utilized though as there are a massive amount of brands and manufacturers that could easily be implemented. What is detailed here should suffice. The same can be said for the scenery don’t expect anything other than blocky buildings and alpine scenes, and you will be fine. In terms of the audio is still very similar to past games and commentary too repetitive. With any annual gaming release, the developing team behind the franchise need to find new ways to immerse the player year over year. Hopefully with the next generation of consoles and new developer tools, we can see the 2021 release break into new territory. If you are a fan of the franchise it’s easy to make the purchase, however if you’re new to the franchise don’t set your sights too highly. Tour de France 2020 isn’t a terrible game but it just hasn’t progressed for a series that has been as long running as it has. Expand
