Name a department that isn’t the Tom Hanks department and there’s plenty of creative work worth praising. It’s just utterly incoherent with the material—that’s even tougher to get past. Even though the title of the movie heralds the biopic's famed subject, this examination of Presley's life and career is told thru the eyes of his notorious manger Col. Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). First off, Austin Butler nails The King in style, attitude and movement (only weird thing, no lipEven though the title of the movie heralds the biopic's famed subject, this examination of Presley's life and career is told thru the eyes of his notorious manger Col. Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). First off, Austin Butler nails The King in style, attitude and movement (only weird thing, no lip sneer). He's especially charismatic when he channels Presley on stage (lip syncing to Elvis' vocals). As Parker, Hanks transforms his look and moves with assurance, but didn't capture that magnetism that made The Colonel a great "snowman." Since Baz Luhrmann directed, there's plenty of showy camerawork, splashy editing and thrilling musical numbers. At 2:39 it never drags. Even so, the emotion doesn't gather much steam and some areas of Presley's life are skimmed over. Whether you appreciate Elvis, his career or his music, this film presents The King in a flashy, fascinating package.… Expand

Elvis would seem to be not a big deal but in reality it manages to be for me a great gift for elvis from heaven, an acceptable script and the great work Austin Butler manages to feel like another excellent song by the artist

Whew this will be hard to talk about considering its content. The subject of "imitation" vs. "appropriation," is taboo, and not something worth delving into for a simple review, but considering the movie's plot hinges on the subject (along with several other topics), it's nearly unavoidable.Whew this will be hard to talk about considering its content. The subject of "imitation" vs. "appropriation," is taboo, and not something worth delving into for a simple review, but considering the movie's plot hinges on the subject (along with several other topics), it's nearly unavoidable. After all, I can only mention the brightly colored, frenzied, fever-dream visuals, that director Baz Luhrmann is known for, so many times before my review gets boring. So, all I'm left with is the content. Now, did the movie promise the truth? No. It did not. And a lot of biopics take liberties via style and substance, whether to serve the story or film private moments generally unknown to us, the audience. However, when someone sits down to watch a biopic, regardless of style, you expect to have a certain degree of authenticity. That's when it came to me, this is not a biopic. Instead, this is more of an animated timeline of the life of Elvis, told through the lens of an unreliable narrator. Don't watch this movie hoping to glean some sort of insight into Elvis' life, rather watch this movie with the understanding that not everything happened exactly as it's portrayed. It's then that the movie begins to make sense. It's just a piece of art, with amazing performances from Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. No more. No less.… Expand
