A patently absurd and funny movie, involving a series of spectacular fight routines, often filmed in slow motion, which are highly acrobatic and exciting.
If you're looking for character development, this definitely isn't the movie for you. But if you enjoy action and want to know why Bruce Lee was a star, break out the popcorn and enjoy.
This is one of Bruce Lee's best movies, and his most emotional performance. Movie pushes all the right buttons as you really feel Lee's rage and innner conflict. Best of all, the fights -- Lee is so fast and brutal with his strkes and counter moves. Awesome marital arts choreogrphy, as Lee seeks vengeance against rival karate school. Final freeze frame encapsulates all the movie's themes.
Lee has a good deal of aggressive boyish charm. However, pic is archaically simple-minded in its storyline and marginally professional in its production. Lo Wei’s direction is a juvenile match for his own screenplay.
Fist Of Fury has a very interesting plot, which is pretty much about Chen Zhen (Bruce Lee) coming back to Jingwu school to marry his fiancee. He later finds out his master Huo Yuanjia has died and he's died due to an illness, this makes Chen devastated. After the news, this makes Chen want to retaliate and get his revenge.
The movie's got some alright acting, it's mainly Chen Zhen (Bruce Lee) who's the main character, who's really good and really hilarious at the same time throughout this movie.
The action sequences throughout this movie are pretty hilarious but they can be pretty bloody, smart and amazingly shot.
Also, the sound effects which have been used throughout this movie have been used so many times but it's honestly hilarious, when we hear them.
I almost forgot to mention, the action sequence which Chen has with the "No Dogs And Chinese Allowed" sign is honestly brilliant, I loved that scene so much.
Overall, Fist Of Fury is honestly an interestingly good movie. It's got an interesting plot, alright acting, some very bloody, smart and amazingly shot action sequences.
Scenario is way too simple, almost childish. We follow Bruce Lee's character during most of the movie. There is some interesting acting to search in the protagonists but Lee's acting is... huh... present ? I mean he does act a lot but it is way too often the same face, the one that could have an angry disruptive child. All the yellings he does while fighting don't help. He plays it so intensely that the important scenes lost their authenticity and then sadly become laughable. And when he don't have this angry facial expression he barely has none. In that way it is hard to have empathy for him because his behaviours all follow the same sheme: anger and then remorse. It feels like he never really learns from the consequences.
Fights are alright. They are punctuated by Lee's dynamism and choregraphies. However the FX and sound effects appear to be as poor as repetitive or even inadequate. It is surely to be linked to the age of the movie but all these *woosh woosh* sounds during fist fights are way too outdated. One thing weird about fights is when the level of violence suddenly increases like when you see blood on the screen. The fracture between fist fights and death is tenuous and contributes to make Lee's character more dangerous than he really should be. Sometimes it feels like cartoon and sometimes like hard reality.
The pace and the way the images are presented are okay. I found the romance plot quite insipid but it is surely due to Lee's strange acting. I don't expect him to be in love, but to be cold and brutal.
'Fist of Fury' is however a cool historical testimony of the hate between Chinese and Japanese. The differences between those two cultures are interesting to analyze.
The ending is unexpected and surprising.
The 1st real martial artists to ever do it. Not that great of a movie now, but back then it was the best karate movie ever. Wish he were alive today to how much more he could have taught the world.
The story is simple, the characters superficial. Some of the scenes look ridiculous and Lees yelling annoying. The sounds are repeating often also.
The only good thing about this movie is the fighting skill of Bruce Lee. You can see here, that he is also a decent actor, what is rare in top fighters. But his acting skills are surely not enough to handle the whole movie.
