I was not disappointed. He sets you up with a barrage of left jabs that started in how the trailers were cut and how the movie plays through most of it's length, and then he delivers a stunning right hook in the major twist of the film. Great portrayals from everyone and a movie that will make you want to watch it again to find the hidden threads that you should've seen and foreshadow what's to come. Expand

A masterpiece all over, and can you believe this came from JORDAN PEELE from the Key and Peele show? The best thing about this film is that it doesn't focus on the scares much. Sure, the scares come and when they do they're great. In fact, it could be a brilliant thriller film if it wanted to. It's not one of those movies which have way too many scares, with no focus being put upon the storytelling. The pace of the movie is really fast, which is good as in some horror films you feel like they focus more upon the setup and just deliver jump scares at the end. The performances are really good. Daniel Kaluuya is brilliant in the film. Just watch that scene where he first goes into the Sunken Place, excellent acting. I think Allison Williams goes really under the radar as she also gives a good performance. The screenplay and score was outstanding building that feeling of dread and realization that he couldn't get out of the place but was just stuck here. The story is fabulous with so many inventive and creative things making twists all the time. The final act is great, right when you understand everything on one go in that TV conversation scene. There's no wonder that this film won Best Original Screenplay at the oscars Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Most here providing negative or low scored reviews because they believe it’s racist against whites or feel it is or isn’t a comedy, are not versed on the history of America nor black culture beyond rap. The horror is aimed more at black people because this is a deeply rooted fear. Whites have taken or tried to take everything...now they come for the only thing black people have left. Their bodies. It draws upon influences from history in RL, such as Emmett Till and the horrific and controversial nature of his death, and also the belief that physically Black people are superior. Also the mistrust of white people that has been bred into blacks, and the reverse, speaks to racial disharmony, even within this very thread. Also speaks to further ignorance people have of each other and situations. One person here didn’t understand the movie, so so they believed the success had to do with the lead actor being black, another believed there is a reverse racism. Neither of those is true. The very definition of racism makes it impossible for such a thing for reverse racism to exist. The word you’re looking for is prejudice. But not so here either. This is simply a writer who was able to exploit a fear, of a community of people, who happen to not be white. The critical acclaim comes from the fact that these fears have never been on display so openly before.
That is why very few if any black people found this movie funny, but did find it horrific, even though fictional.
If you didn’t get the gist of the movie, I urge you to research Emmitt Till, George Stinney, Black WallStreet and History Channels Bio On Lynchings and then watch this again, imagining what it’s like to grow up with that knowledge in your head and what would make you afraid we’re you that person on screen. Not you, sitting at home in you white skin. Would you watch this movie and think, that could never happen, laughing, or think oh god...what if they did try this...what if they did try?!
If you are he’ll bent on believing white men and women are being subjugated and you don’t want to believe otherwise, then skip the research and go watch another movie. You don’t want to get it, and no one is forcing you to.

This is one of the best horror-thriller movies I've seen in a long time.
The story is really good, they give you more and more reveals as the movie goes along, Jordan Peele has a lot to say about race but he says all this commentary without sounding pretentious or preachy, it's a movie you should know nothing about and watch it directly.

The characters were fantastic, they were all interesting and entertaining to watch and that's because the acting was perfect, the main character wasn't stupid which is a problem I have with horror movies, here he was calm and logical.

I really recommend it, the only con I have is that the ending goes a bit too far, I won't spoil anything, but it did become ridiculous to a certain point, I know it's an exageration to prove the movie's point but it was a bit distracting.

When details start to untangle, a horrific, and disturbing concept is presented, and it's ought to make you feel very uncomfortable and on the edge of your seat, right until the ending that provides great closure. The (pseudo-)action sequences at the end are brutal and very well-made. The acting from the cast is on point. I loved this film a lot. Holy jeezums, Get Out is fantastic! I was expecting to like it and get a fun horror movie, but I wasn't expecting a horror movie on par with The Shining.

Its themes on racism are good, but I find that the themes of morality and immortality even more fascinating. What the villain(s) do is undeniably ungodly, but is it even racist? I won't go into spoilers, but this movie raises a lot of interesting questions. Can something be racist and not racist at the same time? What the villain(s) do of course is horrible, but their reasoning, though still morally wrong, can be interpreted as both racist and not racist at the same time! You can argue that them going after black people specifically is racist, but another person can argue that it's in a weird way, admiring black people... just in the most evil way possible.

Get Out messes with my head, and it is very very clever with how everything is set up and resolved.

The movie is full of subtle hints at every turn of the corner that rewards careful viewers while not being wasted on the general audience. Although it may fall pray to slowness at times, the use of classic staples of filmography like sound design, setting, and ambience really never pull you out of the world, even if the action doesn't start until over halfway into the movie. The suspense is extremely well done, and the ending is incredible. If you think the "racism" is too strong or whatever, I hate to be that guy, but Get Out. The movie drives home its themes and points perfectly, and its refreshing to see a horror movie with a message behind it in an age of cut and dry slashers. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Director Jordan Peele goes after the liberal elite in this obviously satire film that isn’t even scary and didn’t scare audiences, but it isn’t even a documentary for that matter. As you know, Get Out was put in the comedy category at the Golden Globes. However, Jordan Peele insists it is a documentary. But it is a comedy, like I said, and it is sure to win many awards in the comedy category. In the film, the ‘help’ of the liberal elite are to serve a purpose that is both funny and quite entertaining. The obvious silly insinuations are full of laughs suitable for the whole family, and jokes for every culture, religion, creed and socio-economic background to enjoy. The entire theatre will burst into unrestrained and spontaneous laughter at the comedic elements strewn forth for the audience’s delight. But if it were a comedy it should have won the category! In all seriousness, 5 out of 5 stars for an outstanding film. The best I have seen in a long time. This will be the gold standard for black horror films, it perhaps has invented a new genre. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Get Out (2017), directed by one of the people who got this job the latest, Jordan Peele. The movie was thought to be an American horror, but instead, it was an American thriller and not only it was a thriller but also a kind of social racism to transition to violent, overt racism. It’s like a racism with violence. I don’t know why white hated black so much. We’re in the 21st century and Lincoln had done something for this situation (perhaps get out set up in the 19th century). This movie had a combination of mystery, horror, violence and racism which what I was talking about, an American thriller about racism. The cast was great. I really like the way Daniel Kaluuya acted as Chris Washington, an African-American guy. I saw him looked like a child when he was frozen, hypnotized with tears coming from his eyes. The reason for such good performances was the adapted screenplay. Everything they said made sense and we could understand a lot. The other casts also did great on being the whitties who hated the blacks. Also I should hear someone says **** Rose Armitage was also well-played by Alison Williams. She was a naïve and privileged American white girlfriend of Chris Washington who was hypnotized by her grandfather in the end. LilRel Howery was great as well playing Chris’ best friend Rob who was really funny (his voice, how he acted). How they set the beginning of this movie was totally perfect for a racism. A black man getting abducted by a white guy and was sent into the white guy’s car. I didn’t know what the hell was happening there. When it got to the scenes where many people are visiting the Armitage house, I still was confused what the movie was trying to tell us. I had no clue. It was just a black guy was taken by his girlfriend to her house and then they were eating outside and then the black guy slept then went to the white girl’s mother and she helped him to reduce smoking addiction. Then, when Chris got kidnapped by the Armitages, I suddenly realized this was a racist movie. I really didn’t understand about the hypnotizing part (how could Missy do that?). In spite of being a thriller, there were jump scares like sudden stab and attack (which nobody gives you a clue about someone is gonna attack you) and bloody violences like a guy cut another guy’s upper part of his head to get his brain, it was really disgusting. Blacks and Whites. The cinematography was just great. The views were well-shot. Get Out also spent some of its time capturing the uneasiness of sitting down on a chair having dinner with the whitties when Chris was berated by Dean and Missy for his smoking addiction and he also smoked in front of Rose, their daughter. As you know, Peele is a comedian, we saw that in the Tv Series Key and Peele, some scenes in the movie I found them funny as well. The premise reads like a Key and Peele sketch concept: A black man visits his white girlfriend’s rich family and awkwardness ensues. I have already said that Howery was one part of the humor. I was really entertained watching the movie (even though I wasn’t old enough to watch it). Even though it’s a thriller, horror movie fans might find it entertaining as well and like it a lot. The movie also gave me some Goosebumps and maybe others too perhaps. Expand

First time director and skit comedy legend Jordan Peele delivers a thrilling, suspenseful, and thought-provoking piece of artwork for his debut film. Whether it is the soulful moody music of Donald Glover's Redbone that help set the scene, to the emblematic awkwardness of meeting your significant other's parents for the first time. This artwork explores how our most vulnerable past experiences have shaped who we are, how cultural disconnect in race can make even the simplest of interactions more complicated than needed. But most importantly how we view black in America. This film challenges you to think about what your sunken place is because it is different everyone. Because Chris' sunken place only looked liked he was watching tv because in the most helpless point of his life Chris was watching tv. So if you want a film that isn't afraid to push to you to the edge and make you feel a little uncomfortable then 'Get Out' might the film for you. Expand

I went into this movie with no expectations because I didn't want to be disappointed due to the overwhelming hype surrounding the movie. Get Out for me wasn't a horror flick but a psychological thriller shrouded in social commentary about the perceptions and stereotypes people of different races have of each other. Some may find the beginning of this movie to be rather slow because it focuses on character development which for me was a good thing. I found the pace of the movie seemed to flow from scene to scene and I was never bored. I thought every character in the movie held their own and gave great and believable performance particularly the lead actor (Daniel Kaluuya)who played Chris. I felt the lead actor and his co-star(Allison Williams)who played Rose Armitage his girlfriend had a natural chemistry which, drew me into their characters. I loved Chri friend played by comedian(LilRel Howery)who starred as Rod Williams the TSA Agent, who provided the comic relief to the movie. Rose's parents Missy and Dean were odd none to say the lease and added to the thrill of the movie along with the two black employees who were just strange. The other character I won't name only added to the strangeness of the story which was fun to watch. Now I don't understand how the user rating on this site aren't higher but, I can only suspect that either those people, who gave the movie anywhere from a 0 to a 3 didn't watch the movie and are planting fake reviews or they are alt-right Trump supporters with an agenda. Any time you write a review with details that have nothing to do with the story line and then throw in some political B.S to cap off your review you're full of "bleep." Now, I will say that those who genuinely didn't take to the movie felt the movie was either predictable, too slow, or had an issue with the end of the movie. Those reviews I can understand but I can't get behind some of the fake reviews that were created to out of spite just to lower the movies overall high score and positive user movie reviews. There are commenters on this site with a shady political agenda and that's unfortunate but don't allow those comments to detour you from seeing this absolutely fun and engaging film. I'm giving this movie a 10. So if you have the time and some spare cash grab a friend and go see Get Out. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Generally considered one of the best movies of 2017, it’s rather safe to name ‘Get Out’ as the best horror film of the year. It’s only real competition would be ‘IT’, maybe ‘mother!’ (it’s proven to be rather divisive), and if you want to count it as a horror film, ‘The Shape of Water’. Excluding IT, there is actually a theme linking these recent horror successes. They each have more to them than simply being scary. Whether it be a message you can interpret, dazzling visuals or splashes of comedy, they each bring something else to the table.

Directed, surprisingly enough, by Jordan Peele, famous for his hilarious sketch comedy, Get Out is a genuine surprise. Based on the director, I’d made the assumption that this film would be a generic horror comedy, presumably relishing in over-the-top jumpscares and gore. Instead, what I found myself watching was somewhat of a mystery. Jordan Peele himself said that the film ‘can’t be put into a genre box’, and he’s right; it could arguably be a horror film, a suspenseful thriller, a comedy, a mystery or a pretentious commentary of race relations in America. Mercifully, I didn’t interpret it as the latter.

Originally conceived following Barack Obama’s second election, the film tackles a subject of race-relations rarely noticed: the opposite of racism. And I’m not talking about ‘reverse-racism’. Many white characters in this film actually love black people so much, they want to become them. Knowing it was written during Obama’s second term, that makes sense. Watching it now, with President Trump in office, gives it a different spin. Regardless of how you interpreted the antagonists, they were probably the most ‘human’ villain in horror in recent memory. Ignoring some questionable science, they were depressingly human.

The cinematography was a pleasant surprise. Shots, while rarely astounding, strongly added to the mood. Throughout the film, they felt as though they were getting closer, until we are unable to escape the situation we’ve been thrust into. Also, at times, we can see background characters watching our protagonist without his knowledge. Tension is present throughout, whether it be due to a nervous comment we aren’t sure how to react to, or somebody brandishing a weapon, the audience can rarely relax, leaving you tired when the credits roll.

The characters are each rather interesting. Obviously, the family is all rather one-note, but they play that one note so sweetly, I can’t bring myself to complain. The exception to this is Rose (Allison Williams). This character shifts so jarringly, I briefly thought it was someone else in her body. Daniel Kaluuya’s portrayal of Chris was also wonderful, and rather believable. Ultimately, the featured roles stole the show, however. Both Marcus Henderson and Keith Stanfield were brilliant, but Betty Gabriel’s Georgina was flawless. While the ‘saying things in an overly happy way to be creepy’ trope has been played out a bit, the cast in this film manage to make it unsettling again.

My main issue with the film is that it doesn’t seem to think the audience is particularly bright. Much of the racial ‘undertones’ are forced upon us, lest we miss the point of the film. There’s also occasional recaps of past events in conversations between Rose and Chris. The audience doesn’t need to be told why something is awkward, or strange; we can work it out. It’s both more rewarding for the viewer, and saves time in the film. This comes to a head when Chris finally works out what’s going on. We see literal flashbacks to previous events, as though we’d have somehow forgotten the things we’d seen half an hour prior.

With that said, however, it does highlight something that pleases me greatly. This is a mystery you can actually solve if you’re paying attention. It’s teased earlier in the film that the family’s grandfather was not only a runner, but that he lost to a black man. It’s not too large a leap to find the character’s envy. Perhaps others are like this? We also learn the parents’ occupations rather early, too. The party scene is utterly littered with clues, to the point of it becoming painfully obvious looking back.

To conclude, I feel this film was an exceptionally successful film. With a budget of merely 4.5 million dollars, Jordan Peele has told not only a highly enjoyable horror (or thriller, or comedy..) film, but an interesting commentary on society today. It also manages to avoid persecuting the viewer, regardless of their race, as I feared it may end up doing. I am quite happy giving this a high 8/10. If you’re looking for an alternative to a crowd-pleasing horror film such as ‘IT’, I recommend Get Out. At the moment, the film has made a profit of 250 million dollars at the box office, and it deserves every one of them.

The acting, direction, screenplay, philosophy, and the tone of this movie matched how crazy that film is set up. If Jordan Peele made a sequel or a spinoff of Get Out, the next movie will be even crazier like this one! I had heard this was a great movie, and I was not disappointed.

I will first agree that as a white male, no matter how poor I grew up there is a lot of privilege and safety in who I was born as. I haven't had to walk in the shoes of a minority like that so my view on this is of course from the outside.

I don't understand how its determined a comedy/horror movie. There were a couple of amusing parts but the whole thing reads like a horror movie, a very well written, well directed, well acted horror movie.

The movie itself is a slow build up from the beginning. The actual action of the movie only starts towards the end, but Peele's story keeps you enthralled anyways. I really found myself liking the main character Chris and I was rooting for him the whole movie. His girlfriend Rosie wasn't my favorite as a character, but the actress did great herself it was just the character I didn't like.

The hero of the movie to me though was Rod. He was pretty funny, and maybe that is why they call it a comedy, but I found he stole the show for me.

The trailers are pretty straight forward with the story, but you will still enjoy it and there are still surprises. By the end of the movie I didn't trust white people and I pretty much embarrassed to be white by the end, although in full disclosure I don't really trust white people anyways and am embarrassed by them regularly, but that is beside the point.

I can't recommend it enough that people should see this movie.

The good: I was impressed with how much the story stuck with me. It was full of great acting, directing and writing and I would be happy to pay theater prices again to see more of Peele's stuff if he does this type of horror again.

The bad: Nothing bad that I could point to.

I was skeptical of it at first, since I knew the director was Jordan Peele, I thought "Oh this is going to be a comedy" or something. I WAS WRONG. The movie starts off with a light tone, and in the middle of it all it just gives out a feeling of discomfort. A feeling of awkwardness. It's a good feeling because that's what the movie sets out to achieve. The feeling of impending racism, of being stereotyped. The movie sets out to give us a feeling that we are not welcome here.

Coming into the cinema, I really had no clue what this movie was about, apart from what they divulged in the trailer, and the trailers even added to my confusion.

The movie does a great job of setting the overall eerie-ness of the atmosphere. The soundtrack does wonders to it as well! Although this movie isn't a comedy, it had some really funny scenes that you can tell Jordan Peele just couldn't help himself. The timing of the comedy, and the scarcity of it, is why this film is gold to me. The comedy comes at such a time where we're just coming off a heavy, intense scene, and the director just wants us to take a breather. A little comic relief. And it is effective! It is well timed. I applaud them for that.

I don't have anything to say about the acting other than, it was good, not great. What I will say though, is the movie is unoriginal. When I found out the real reason for everything at the end, I felt as if I've already seen this plot twist somewhere else before. A lo and behold, I remembered the movie "The Skeleton Key". It's not that old of a movie, but it had a similar plot. That's the only part where I felt this movie did weakly. The lack of originality. But where they lacked in originality, they made up for in execution! Bravo.

No, seriously, this will be the number one movie of 2017 no doubt. It’s already earned a number 1 spot on my top 10 list of 2017, and its only March. Jordan Peele is a genius. This movie is genius and it deserves all of the awards and praise.

Most people are chalking this up as a movie about racism, but don’t let that deter you from seeing it(if you’re that kind of person that is). From the beginning of the movie right up until the final moments, I was sitting, quite literally, on the edge of my seat. It will be a movie that will not only entertain you, but make you think as well. It’s got a lot of a Stepford Wives feel, and a little bit of an old school horror flick feel. So basically, it is awesome. The moments leading up the end will have you not wanting to blink, there’s a slight twist which most people will see coming, but some may not. Either way, it was satisfying.

Let’s talk about how this was Jordan Peele’s directing debut! I cannot believe we have not seen more from him before this. He’s a creative genius, and now that I know he has four more movies in the works I cannot wait. I will be supporting him until the end of my life. Perhaps one of the best directed movies I have ever seen. I love the fact he teamed up with Jason Blum, as we all know is another one of my favorites. From the cinematography to the story to the actors he chose and the blunt focus on racism, it was all perfect. He wrote a story that people need to see, and one that will frighten you honestly. Hand claps for Peele! He deserves it, and if he doesn’t get nominated and WIN some sort of award for this movie, we’ll all know it’s rigged.

The actors he chose for the characters couldn’t have been better chosen. From Allison Williams as the perfect daughter, to Bradley Whitford as the caring father, to LilRel Howery as the comedic relief and awesome best friend, to our main character Daniel Kaluuya, it was all perfect.

Basing on a sad-popular behavior such as racism in the United States of today, filmmaker Jordan Peele—who gained status by TV shows of a comic nature that with the accustomed dubious quality achieved American transcendence—presents a sour, fiery and impetuous social satire brimming with black humor with delicious psychological thriller hint that arrives in order to impact strong on a certain well-off sector thanks to a reflective tale of the big little lies that we tell each other in such a clever, effective and commercial way that might well gets it a list of meritorious titles as "cult film" or "the best suspense movie of the year" and maybe, a round of accolades for its splendid components, identical in quality, different in appearance.

Peele's feature film converges, in not few vertices, with the laudable allegorical representation ("The Invitation", 2015), highlighting as the main concomitant the essence of the true thriller: increasing discomfort and vulnerability sown in order to audience does not feel secure with what happens on the screen, which provokes in this incessant birth of perceptions toward the loaded questions posed by the story. A genre equivalent to a perverse roulette, in which in the slightest moment of carelessness, a rush of revolutions can shake your safety from head to toe. Such concordance adorned with an acute social criticism, substantial of the authentic films inaugurated by Mr. Hitchcock, in which are exhibited the poorest actions that we can come to commit. We're the black and white dots.

While it builds outstanding psychological game with detailedness, Peele, deserving of double mention acting as scriptwriter and director, conjures up ordinary components and other unusual that can be abridged in three major fields: the first one, of course, is the narrative, although, beyond wise skill of developing the subliminal core idea, it's the successful combination and harmonization between two discordant genres as horror and comedy, an impressive achievement especially in the decadent film period in which we are in. While comedy is based on the supporting comic relief gags (adversarially a black man) and the irony of the situations, it's fascinating as horror doesn't require scary monsters or spooky entities to fulfill its objective, here, terror springs up from dread and the veiled significance of the words, from confrontation with the harsh reality. The second one is plausible constituents at a technical level, namely, its mise-en-scène, soundtrack, cinematography, and photography that unite the vertiginous final act with the hesitant first act using, as usual in Jason Blum's company, precise elements that facilitate and enrich the following of the story. It's prodigious in the composition of its images, having in its power a vacation home encircled by a dry forest is not a break, on the contrary, it's sensational as they create beauty, usually in confined spaces, with what they have. With certainty, the film has conceived one of the most beautiful shots in horror film history, an oneiric picture where Chris (Kaluuya) jolts awake after a cyclic hypnosis in a pale leather sofa, with the sound effect from an old TV as the only company, his face—tremendously photographic—raises an analogy through the melodramatic tears in his exorbitant eyes, a frame that will last in the memory of any modern cinephile. There are also sparkling scenes, which reach horns of the moon in its exciting third act, highlighting vigorously camera focus in the third major factor: the overwhelming and heterogeneous performances. Kaluuya's role radiates power and strength, he's sensitive and unprotected when he needed, aggressive and lethal when everything is a disaster. The alienation of the Armitage family is dosed between the competent actors, from which stand out Allison Williams (with a twisted plot worthy of Shyamalan) and her brother in the fiction. Exclusive attention requests scene stealer Betty Gabriel, who plays a couple of shocking scenes, with dimensions of complexity and interpretative depth typical of an acting matron. Be careful because this lady and Kaluuya will present great surprises.

Conscious of its game, Peele's motion picture is a deliberate subversion, offered by the hand of cinema, which cries out for the eradication of injustices perpetuated by the social and political sects of the Trump era. It also breaks supposed barriers between genres and ideas and overflows creativity and power by creating situations as exciting as cartoon-like, as intelligent as reflexive; A satire that wasn't requested, perhaps out of fear, but in the end, it came with a relentless purpose. It achieves what many feature films don't: surprise and affect.

A work this polished and well-executed is something many directors who have been in the game for years fail to achieve. The performances are incredible. If Daniel Kaluuya does not get on Oscar for his performance here then something has gone horribly wrong. His performance as a guy who is just trying to make the best of an awkward scenario, but slowly losing his ability to as things get progressively stranger is nothing short of absolutely believable. The rest of the cast is game as well. They're manipulation and bizarre behavior set you on edge in ways few other movies can. The scenes are lovingly crafted and the choice in music that accompanies them is spot on.

It's the originality that ultimately wins the day. First time director Peele toys with your expectations in interesting ways. He's done so since before the movie even came out. The social-commentary in regards to racial tensions is something that stirred up a lot of controversy. There are people who won't even give the movie a shot as a result. Their loss. The satire not only shines light on some significant social issues, but is excellently weaved into the plot as a reason to make the main character uncomfortable with meeting his girlfriend's parents in the first place. Needless to day, partially because so many others have said it, it's not racist. Not some middle finger to white people or anything like that. But, whatever. Not gonna bother talking about it any further. People have already made up their minds on what they think this is about.

If the movie has one flaw it's that you can kind of pick out the twists before they happen. Don't get me wrong, there are still surprises in store. It's just that the big reveal as to why exactly all of this is happening is evident right before it is revealed. It was too well telegraphed to not become immediately obvious. Then there's the bit that has to do with a significant character to the plot. It was obvious what was going to happen there from the trailers. Still, plenty of weirdness and questions you'll find yourself asking (which will get answered).

The movie is essentially an awkward introduction to being introduced to the parents of a significant other. The difference from this and, say, the Ben Stiller comedy "Meet the Parents" is the horror angle. Instead of increasingly upping the humor, Get Out ups the mystery, tension, and uncomfortable nature of the events. Speaking of the humor, it's worth noting just how surprisingly funny the movie is. Most of it comes from Lil Rel Howery, the main character's best friend. He serves as the comic relief and is given some absolutely hilarious lines that are well acted. Simply put, Get Out is one heck of a horror-comedy and a stunning directorial debut from Jordan Peele. I can't get over how talented the cast is, the unique and well-shot scenes, the clever ways it plays with expectations, and just all around uniqueness. Get Out proves to be a standout in the ever crowded horror genre. It's rare these days to see a movie in this genre so well made. It's becoming more common, but still far too infrequent. The movie is simply a breath of fresh air and a clear contender for best movie of the year.

Even the few who will predict the "what" will likely never be able to predict the "why". And the "how" is incredibly entertaining to watch. Peele manages to hinge the film on not one reveal, but multiple, which teases the fun out over the run time of the film. The only thing that keeps me from giving Get Out a "10" is that once the reveals are done with, the movie began to drag for me. This encompasses the last 15 minutes, or so, of the film. Expand

Saw this because it was getting such raves. Agree with someone else that this was more of a "psychological thriller shrouded in social commentary" which IS right up my ally. I'm giving it a "10" not because it is perfect, but because it breaks new ground, showing race from the outsider point of view. I thoroughly felt Chris' unease every step of the way. After you watch it, go to BuzzFeed for the 22 things you probably missed. The film is loaded with symbolism, most of which I DID miss. I think that's what elevates the film above pure horror--the directer was extremely crafty. And witty to boot. Kudus! i look forward to his next.... Expand

What's it like?: (All in trailer!) Caucasian girl invites African American boyfriend to see her parents in the suburbs for the first time, but everything feels weird from the beginning, including the closet-racist parents, robot-like maid and groundsman (both African American), etc. In the end, the two of them need to 'Get Out' of that suburb. It's a weird, shocking and surprising thriller that puts a new spin on race relations in the US.
>
Pros:
>
1. The film gives a weird vibe from the very beginning to the very end, making me tense the whole time.
>
2. There are many shocking and surprising instances that made me jump out of my seat! They are intelligent thrills not cheap ones.
>
3. The film reminds the viewers of the race relations in the US, that despite the prohibition of slavery in the 1860s and the Civil Rights Act of the 1960s, still create uneasiness among Americans. It then goes further to suggest that nothing has really changed.
>
Cons: >
1. There is the usual cliche of people not moving fast enough to Get Out! Why are some people so complacent despite them being smart people and with all the warnings available? Ha ha...
>
2. There are some medical procedures portrayed that should not be feasible at this time. The author has taken this film into science fiction territory, when he need not do so.
>
3. What had happened to the maid and the groundsman doesn't make sense. Why choose them for that purpose? >
How would the different age groups rate it?
Children: (The film is not rated for them.)
Teenagers: For those who can see this R-rated film, it’s an Excellent. Young adults: Excellent
Medium age adults: Excellent
Old adults: Excellent
My rating: 5/5 (no half scores). Pay to watch it in the cinema and then buy the DVD.

Recently, I liked “Green Room”, and “Split”, but it continues to be a hard genre to break out with a truly original idea. Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” felt like the universe had heard my prayers. A smart satire on social commentary with genuine humor, and yet a still bone chilling plot? How have we been so blessed? The balance of horror and comedy is weighted perfectly, with every release of laughter being used to reset the suspense, giving the audience the chance to build back up to paralyzing fear over and over again. All of the performances were pitch perfect (Alison Williams with the keys!), and I anticipate this is only the beginning of Daniel Kaluuya’s rise. I often complain to my friends that the biggest disservice of the horror/thriller genre is that by pigeonholing something as “a scary movie”, you isolate a whole demographic of people who want to just go see a blockbuster on the weekends. Having Peele’s name attached and released by Universal on the perfect weekend (only up against week 3 of Lego Batman) gave this layered story a chance to breathe and be appreciated for what it is. Creepy as all hell, and maybe a little too believable. 9.2/10 Expand

I don’t like to use rotten tomatoes to evaluate movies but damn! This is crazy. So I went to see it and… it is pretty good. Good for comedy, but horror?

Let me get it straight first: I think it is a very good movie! It is smart, well-shot and original. I think it tangled a very taboo subject and successfully. It asked the question: are really comfortable with racial differences. Unlike 90% of the movies today that treated way too seriously than it is, it poked fun of it by showing some of the social awkwardness. They would keep on saying things like “black is the new white” and “I would vote for Obama a third time” but on the other hand gave the main character with a strange eye. Admitted we all have it once in a while when we first meet diversity. It poked fun of people’s political correctness yet ignorance on the inside. I find it funny and refreshing. However, the problem is this kept on repeating and feel very unrealistic. I felt like I was watching an M Night Shyamalan. Speaking of which, at times I even wondered if the film directed by him because there were so many similarities to his styles, such as the awkward dialogues, constant and random close ups and most importantly, very out of nowhere twist which I won’t spoil.

I did like the cinematography. I liked the set. The house looked like familiar yet unique. It looks like somewhere your neighbor lives but to me it also felt like one of those southern cotton farm in the old times. It gave me a sense of uncomfartability but it doesn’t creep me out, which I would expect from an horror film. I think the problem is that everything is way too well polished. By that I meant that every things looked way too clean and it felt the budget was way bigger than it was (5 mil). Split on the other hand, had a slightly bigger budget but it had a more indie look, which helped to raise the suspense and dread. One thing I did like is the sunken place. I won’t spoil it, because it is hard to describe anyways, but just watch…..

The big problem is that the comedy went too far, especially from the actor Lil Rel Howery. He is very good and very likable, but his section is so over-the-top that it clashes with the tone of the movie. Long story short, I liked it as a social commentary rather than a thriller or horror film. I felt the advertising is very misleading. There were many plot holes, which again, I don’t want to spoil. Good Movie, but great, not really!!

a mind is a terrible thing to waste..

Get Out

How often do we encounter actors speaking through their eyes? Daniel Kaluuya is riveting in his scared-to-death sequences (especially the first time when Catherine Keener hypnotizes him) and what really gets you here is that, so is the audience. Get Out is of course Jordan Peele's show in every frame but it is more of the Jordan-the director and not Jordan-the writer, for even though being familiar with the concept or idea the audience seems to fall into his world within the first act which was actually shot more beautifully and with excellent detailing for Jordan knew that this is the part where the audience may go off track and after the movie has surpassed the first act and the introduction of its creepy world and dreadful characters, the premise of the movie will easily favour in for the rest of the acts. Besides Daniel there is very little of the other cast to perform on or project themselves to that range so it resides within his territory and he has taken care of it, nicely. Get Out is smart, a bit shady and surprisingly filled with stunning violent sequences which ups the ante a bit and boosts the movie to the whole new level where it plays off in the major league against the action sequences of the movies like The Revenant and The Atomic Blonde.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie had me on the edge of my seat yelling GET OUTTT!!. The play on stereotypes made for a very interesting, hilarious, and bloody tale. However, as I sat there watching in shock I began to predict small minded people of all cultures taking this film seriously. The writers fictional play on sinister whites abducting and victimizing naive blacks (for money by the way) by taking their stereotypical "genetic assets" and using them for themselves was outright insane. Clearly these scenes hit the psyche and pulled the peculiar workings of slavery out of the viewers consciousness. It was entertaining, dark, and comedic, although I am sure someone left feeling offended while others left believing these things are actually possible. I was thoroughly entertained and satisfied to watch a good film created by blacks that did not resort to the usual hood story. I was thinking Alfred Hitchcock weird the whole time. It went bloody and over the top at the end but that's horror for you. I have not witnessed a creepier movie family since Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Rose had me terrified at the end, she played a cold blooded psychopath quite well. Expand

Funny when it needs to be, and creepy, crawly and get under your skin for the rest. Jordan Peele has knocked it out of the park with his first directorial effort.
