This effort to show Lara’s struggle like a coming-of-age story is what sets Girl apart. Dhont fleshes out his story with little growing-up moments everyone can relate to.
It is a quiet movie until it isn’t, a gentle character study that goes into extreme territory, a wrenching drama that you think is about finding acceptance until it threatens to become about the impossibility of that very thing.
This is a Great Movie! A Young Friend went through this, at a young age, and the Ideas and Angst were real. She was a lot like Lara! If someone thinks this story was delusional, they should walk a mile in Lara's Pumps! There are situations that many kids won't go through included in this movie, but it is consistent with what an American Child would have to go through. The fact that the Father was supportive is realistic! What Parent wouldn't love their child, no matter what they did. This is something a Parent should realize their Child who has gone through this needs love, and this movie Correctly shows this, and is consistent with what I know of my Young Friend! She is now an upstanding citizen!
And, the ending is unfortunate, but also real! People don't realize that this part of the population suffers from around a 40% suicide attempt rate. We should love these Girls and Boys. Remember Matthew Shepard! His situation was a real story! That was going the other way, Girl to Boy. And he ended up dead, beaten, on a Fence. What child deserves that? Watch "Boys Don't Cry!" with Hillary Swank. She won an Oscar for her portrayal, and that was based on a Real Story! "Girl" was also based on a Real Story, and her name was Nora Monsecour. Look her up! She liked the film. Not too bad for her own story! It wasn't "abnormal behavior", because being born means you could have a lot of things go different with your Body. It's a Miracle that we are as born as close as we are to each other, in how we are. It really is a spectrum! Is being Left Handed a Birth Defect? Red Hair? Those are about the same percentage of the population as people born Gender Dysphoric! Ask a Left Handed person if they have a Birth Defect, next time you see them!
You have to ask yourself: What Would You Do, If Your Child Came To You With This? This Story puts you in that situation.
Gut wrenching drama about a girl, who wants to become a ballerina more than anything else, but is trapped inside a boy body. Trying to get socially accepted as a girl is of course a struggle. Beautifully made and well acted, no doubt created to feed the gender debate, but this kind of thing does happen. It's always better to be informed than ignorant, so watch this movie.
The story was ok but something in the treatment of camera interferes the conection between the character and the audience. The strong performance and the beauty of photography was there, but the opression of the character probably was better explained with a more near perception of the camera in some scenes like in the dancing ones.
