What's so bad about this? It's pretty messy and mean-spirited and it doesn't really have anything to make it memorable or great but it's still entertaining and has some really funny moments. I had a decent time watching it

Back in theDouble-cross, triple-cross, even quadrulple cross: That's the concept behind this movie. David Oyelowo plays the hapless employee of an edgy drug company, who's sent to Mexico for business, where things go awry from the offset. Back in the States, his bosses (Joel Edgerton & Charlize Theron) get meaner and less likeable. The intent was probably to create one of those elaborately-plotted narratives that keeps you guessing, while entertaining with clever conversation. While the twists are plentiful (and not all that surprising), the dialogue is uninspired and never funny. Besides Oyelowo, who does fine, Theron seems to be relishing her over-the-top shrew but isn't especially enjoyable and Edgerton is just constantly befuddled. While it's well-paced, the movie never takes us on an enjoyable trip. Expand

You know, for a supposed dark comedy it's not really funny. As a crime-thriller it also falls short as nothing actually happens for the first hour or so. It isn't until Sharlto Copley shows up that Gringo decides to finally start moving all of those pieces it spent so long setting up. Even when the bullets begin to fly though, the movie never manages to make anything compelling come from it's uninspired writing.

All of the film's plot twists (and there are a lot of them) are rather predictable and therefore never serve the intended purpose of deviating from the expected outcome(s). The entire subplot involving Harry Treadaway and Amanda Seyfried serves no purpose at all. It's inclusion is just baffling. And for a tale so centered on everybody wanting a piece of a pharmaceutical company's potentially profitable product, there's remarkably little time spent on telling the viewers anything about the pill in question. Money appears and disappears out of nowhere, the stories of side-characters like Thandie Newton and HernĂ¡n Mendoza are left dangling for the majority of the running time, and the whole thing is overcrowded to the point where so much of what's going on feels like a collection of half-baked ideas that never quite coalesce into something cohesive.

With so much of the larger plot surrounding the protagonist "Harold" failing to come together, the only thing to latch onto is caring about said main character. Unfortunately, Gringo's attention is pulled in so many different directions that it's star ends up feeling lost in the shuffle so much of the time. As good of a performance as David Oyelowo gives, bless his heart, he never really struck me as having leading man potential even with his character having been intentionally written in a way that makes him as likable and sympathetic as possible.

What really stinks about Gringo though? It isn't funny. Some laughs would have gone a long way. I might have even been more forgiving on it as a whole. But no, we just watch Harold get tormented and betrayed by just about everyone he comes in contact with to the point where the movie feels mean-spirited right up to it's "haha, the bad guys got what they deserved in the end!" conclusion that feels undeserved and unsatisfying. Squandering both it's great cast and creatively vulgar dialog in the process.

Gringo was a film that supposedly should be a comedy but the laughter was absent for me.

Beyond the enormous waste of its strong cast, the script felt quite dispersed, absolutely unfunny and quite uneven.

And that's not the worst, the worst is the film's lenght because the story while stupid can actually work, but the narrative is so slow and weak that the almost two hours this film lasts feel eternal.
Even in more stupid comedies the rhythm is more critical and they offer comical situations in order to maintain the interest and attention of the audience. That doesn't happen in this film and it takes more than an hour to work much better and fluently.

I really thought it would be better but it was actually quite disappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of overused jokes. "Deep" conversations that are cringe-worthy and not so smart thought. SPOILER:
the conversation between David and Edgerton's brother is interesting tho, but the momentum is easily cut-off and faded away. So yeah.. wasted money. But in a way this movie helps you to apreciate more the good movies.

Gringo is your typical crime movie where one thing goes horribly wrong and is quickly followed by a whole parade of equally horrible events where everything and anything can and will go spectacularly wrong. But don't worry because DavidGringo is your typical crime movie where one thing goes horribly wrong and is quickly followed by a whole parade of equally horrible events where everything and anything can and will go spectacularly wrong. But don't worry because David Oyelowo is there to make it hilarious by reacting to every ridiculous event in an over the top and hysterical manner you can't help but laugh at.

David Oyelowo is a mild-mannered business man who accidentally gets involved with a Mexican drug lord. How will the ordinary man cope in such a situation? About as well as you'd expect. The first 30 - 40 minutes sets up all the necessary plot points, allowing you to almost predict everything that's about to happen. Unfortunately this has to be the most boring and bland plot set up ever. Don't let the opening scene fool you, the first act is enough to put you into a deep sleep and in my case it very nearly did. If you manage to fight off sleep for this long then settle down for a crime story that keeps the laughs coming. The plot is so bonkers you're guaranteed to find some of it amusing. David Oyelowo and Charlize Theron were having fun, their performance was funny and it's not often you see them in this kind of role. The addition of Sharlto Copley will improve any film and in the case of Gringo it's enough to give it a whole extra star. Entertaining in the moment and pretty forgettable afterwards. Recommended if you've nothing better to watch this weekend.

Great acting, lots of laughs, very pleasantly surprised. If you do not laugh at Harolds scream there is something wrong with you.

Has some decent acting, especially Copely, but the script isn't great and the story is derivative.

"Gringo" is a film that I found less decent, although it is funny at times, and the action scenes are redeemable, the dialogues and the acting of the characters were very bad and so vulgar, this is not supported.

ButThis movie's nature seemed to have flew over the majority of the audiences head, and not appreciate the value of this movie. It simply had charisma and fast paced shift of events which it seems it was confused with chaos and urged scenes. But no, the movie had amazing scenes and great a acting with very impressively developed characters in a short time. And due to the fact that it had so many it was like a chaotic free for all fight for the life. But the plot was rock solid despite what others say, if you pay attention to the detail, it's all there. The action scenes where really lacking a lot sadly and the ones that where in the movie where kept pretty much simple and too realistic for this kind of a movie. But that drama, the unforeseen entertaining twists and the hilarious similes where amazingly fitting and it also created immersion. Apparently this was also hard to appreciate for the general viewers. Overall this was a charismatic movie with fresh style, and great acting that deserves all the respect for creating something fresh in this genre. It's deserving of a very good movie tag. And sadly super under rated!!! (This is me not being subjective and claiming that this movie deserves better) Expand
